Of all his songs, this album titled track "Power Show" in my contention, is the best composition of his philosophical, civil rights activist, international socio-human liberator freedom fighter, and musical career. It has all the major components of a genuis, a virtuoso of the African jazz phenomenon at work ... Olufela Anikulapo Kuti. A fearless giant among great men!
Power show is one my 3 most favourite Fela music. I believe Fela himself considered the music so great that just like ‘Go slow’ before it, he played the instrumental to close his live shows at the Empire Hotel Shrine. Along with both music, I also put on top of my favourite Fela music, ODOO, which I choose to call Felanomics. That music described the ever increasing inflationary trends we experience in Nigeria since the 1970s, ever spiralling till today. For me, I don’t call Fela’s music Afrobeat. That word has become a disservice to the music Fela created. To emphasise the originality, I simply call the music FELA. No one up till today gets me musically since Fela. Abami rest in Power!!!
This is it . Pure unadulterated African jazz . Well brewed , stewed to perfection by the master and original inventor. Incorporating rock , soul, funk , jazz , rhythm and blues. The master himself . Genuinely talented musician at work. This song always registers in my blood . Listen to it . The lyrics so true accurately written and candidly devoid of cosmetics, exaggeration or embellishments whatsoever . As is the case, and hallmark of his critical works, every Nigerian can, and will bear attestation to the plethora of incongruities that he pinpoints in his delivery, to assail the governmental authorities that have perennially abdicated their oath , responsibilities and obligation to provide basic necessities they so swore to make available to the suffering masses of Nigeria . Constant and steadfast in the face of brutal threat to his life and limb, he never wavered . As a matter of fact , the more the persecutions weighed upon him , the more vocal and precise his message became . Truth is really an open wound only nurtured by conscience . Because his cause was just, he persisted in his protests and lambasted the administrative establishments because he knew if he did not, no one will . He saw it all . All the unacceptable breaches that constituted the central core of his political activism are more rife and pronounced in multiple manifestations TODAY in NIGERIA and in ALL AFRICAN SOCIAL, POLITICAL and ECONOMIC INSTITUTIONS . His playing on the Saxophone is very sorrowful and melancholic as befits a song that describes a state of lamentation . He has played lots of melodious and sonorous solos in previous works and renditions , but this one touches the heart . Really tugs at the strings . Also his virtuosic ability shines brilliantly in this track . Notice too , that the guitar and bass normally features as anchors in the rhythm section , but he permitted a guitar solo on the lead telecaster which adds flavor and unique quality to the bedrock of this song . Over the years he had grown and become a maestro of his genre. But always keeping the momentum of deep percussion and heavy beat that characterize his sound and make it loved , accessible , but inimitable . In this regard , his sons Femi and younger brother Seun are still working hard with their own take , but not perfected yet . But l honor both and other of his numerous disciples for making BABA FELA ANIKULAPO - KUTI proud . There will be more . E no finish . E no finish . E no finish . Nigerians wake up . Fela has been fighting for you for YEARS !
It is interesting and a little curious that Fela took a break from his politically tinged music to write a more observational song about everyday events, albeit the still frustrating event of the officials flexing their muscles. 🎶 ✍️ 🎻 🎷 💪 🎸 💪
A great critique of Nigeria's still colonial mentality. Papa Fela was so damn ahead of his time, hence the continual harassment and jailing of him. He will always live in my heart. I was born with Fela's music. My Iya and Baba played it home continuously and consistently as I grew up. My Baba also knew him. Fela, continue to live in eternal bliss. Rest In Power. Ase #yeahyeah
Oftentimes,I reason that this is Fela's most flavoured musical undertaken.Believe the attributes.Just enjoy the music,I've spent both teens & maturity listening to it & have had no dull moments!!!
Any one who really went to The Shrine at Kalakuta also know as AREA... would know that when this song came on the show was over.... This was Fela's closing Masterpiece.... Regulars started leaving...Not Me this IS FELA!!!!!

The one who carries death in his pouche. The irreplaceable Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Or boy they don't make them like this anymore. The power show. I love you Fela.
His playing on the Alto 🎷 Sax, the favorite go to musical instrument of this maestro, extraordinarily unique African originator, is so virtuosic, fluent, poignant, romantic and melancholic, but crucially exerts a hard bite on the African, in this case, emphasis on the deficient Nigeria's political administration, that is not the people's service or the people's political power oriented, but instead exists to suppress and malign the citizens rights to accountable government. He normally doesn't allow a lead 🎸 guitar solo, but he did in this rendition which showcased the fine dexterity of the guitarist. With thick percussion, bass, vocals, organ, and other accompanying instruments, it is very danceable, and single handedly occupies an exalted spot as one of the greatest creative works in modern 🎶 music. It is rich with the inflections of jazz, funk, rock, soul, rhythm and blues -- "Power Show" by Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Really? I know he was great at lots of horns, but I think his "go to instrument" was the tenor sax. (Femi Kuti,'s is the Alto sax). I watched Fela many times and always saw him play the tenor. CBB (Glastonbury) was an example of him playing the soprano sax. Although in ODOO he either played the alto or soprano for his solo.
Thank you God for allowing Fela Anikulapo Kuti pass this earth and leave a legacy that would be forever cherished. Thank You Fela. May your soul and spirit rest in perfect peace.
A legend and the best musical maestro of his time in Africa.. A social crusader. A great Philosopher, a prophet and his message is still relevant today. . My respect Sir Continue to rest in peace..
I saw Fela 3 times in the US. First at the Felt Forum, 11/10/86 where I believe I bought the last 3 tickets. The Felt Forum was about a 3,000 seat venue attached to Madison Square Garden. My wife, my friend and me were just about the only white people in attendance. Then I saw him and band and wives at Great Woods in Mansfield MA. 6/28/90 An outdoor venue where he OPENED for Toots and the Maytals and Jimmy Cliff. With all due respect the bill should have been upside down. And finally at a club on Washington Street in Boston, MA. This venue had no seats. So the wife and I pushed our way to stand chest high to the stage. We were 2 feet from Fela. I grabbed a poster for the event coming in. I rolled it up and put it in a stairway hand rail. When we came out it was still there. My now ex wife has it. We also went to a South Boston rock club called The Channel with no seats but Fela was held up at Customs and about midnight they announced no show. My wife was really crying.
Those three times must have been electrifying. I watched Fela at the shrine several times. It was always an electrifying atmosphere. Absolutely brilliant musician.
Fela's music and life are so vibrant. I love how his lyrics speak of the everyday injustices Nigerian people suffer. The mainstream news in America rarely speaks of this. I'm really fascinated and can't wait to listen and learn more!
This is MUSIC. Listen to music by highly advanced and talented players of musical instruments. Well mixed, timed, and composed. The fluid, fluent inflexions, soothing, exhilarating sonic demonstration by Fela Anikulapo Kuti, is precisely supported, and rhythmically complimented by his equally gifted accompanying musicians in his band who get the chance to showcase their unique natural abilities in this titled track Album "Power Show". Potently remarkable is the tight percussive concoction that continually guards and steadies the course of the song gripping it grounded on solid footing. One cannot finish this comment and observation without mentioning the piercing guitar solo by the lead guitarist who delivers one of the finest healing jazz guitar overtures midway in the song. The maestro and bandleader, Fela hardly allows a solo during recording or live performance, but l guess the guitarist was brilliant enough to execute a soft, but extraordinarily outstanding sonic invocation.
Judy told my brother the same thing though he begged to differ nonetheless I disagree with him. This is best song bar none. Though I do like CBB. Look and laugh...
Very poignant music. Unique beat. This is the one man who truly suffered FOR NIGERIA AND NIGERIANS. He never backed down. TOTALLY FEARLESS. HE STOOD ALONE . STOOD HIS GROUND . DID NOT RUNAWAY . HE TOWERS INCOMPARABLY ABOVE ALL ANY OTHER FIGURE IN THE POLITICAL EMANCIPATION AND LIBERATION OF HIS BELOVED HOMELAND NIGERIA AND AFRICA PERIOD !
Holy 👻 Ghost! Listen to a master Saxophonist play. A musician who has 👌 perfected his art to the finest apogee of rhythmically melodious sonic instrumentation. You just do not want him to stop. So effortlessly fluid and sizzling in delivery and expression. It soothes the mind and heals stress. His fingers sliding and manoeuvring up down on the Saxophone keys , in the same vein all over the organ keyboards. I recommend fledgling young talents of that very revered musical weapon, 🎷 the Saxophone, to take lessons and be inspired by this great composer Olufela Anikulapo Kuti's work here on this number "Power Show". From alpha to omega, it ranks and qualifies as one of the greatest classic albums of all times!
One of the greatest musical satires. A potently brilliant composition. Discerning inflective lyrics, melodious solo on the alto Saxophone by Fela Anikulapo Kuti. "Power Show" An irony of a song. Highly emotion charged lamentation of corruption and wanton abuse of power in government in Nigeria, 🌍 Africa, and undeveloped Nations by top government officials, and the embezzlement rich and powerful in those societies.
This the song Baba Fela used to close his Live show @ The Shrine after every Comprehensive Show...His pure Genius..... You can Hear Kolobo....Tunde.... Baba Ani...Ojo ...Tony Allen and of course FELA
Everybody say yeah yeah ! Listen to talented musicians who have perfected their art play . Baba Fela Anikulapo Kuti himself, especially in his opening notes in this solo, renders a lesson here in fluid saxophone playing to young aspiring students of this phenomenal musical instrument . Enjoy it !
I remember as a regular at the shrine cross examination was always the first second after Baba Ani warms up the place and this comes as the climax of the night . Great philosopher and one of the best in the world. Eleniyan
TEAR-JERKER . Delightfully sombre sweet music . EVERYTHING AND EVERY WORD HE SANG AND WROTE IS TRUE MORE SO NOW TODAY AND WORSENINGLY PREVALENT EVERYDAY IN NIGERIA . POWERSHOW !
One of my all time top five Fela Numbers, such a very beautifull and melodiously crafted number, the live version in Germany was longer and equally superbly arranged with a small remix twist to the singing and the arrangement(check out the tenor guitar). Seyi Idowu
My God. Virtuoso. No doubt of the greatest majestic players of the musically elite instrument called the 🎷 Saxophone.... Olufela Anikulapo Kuti. If you know music, fill your mind, ❤ heart and soul up with this highly talented fluid mastery on that reserved sonic machine. Enjoy the rhythm and dance, dance, dance!!!
To all those taking the so called vaccine, Fela would say "you go suffer for nothing." I wish I had met Fela in person. I once ran into Ruben Blades at a burger shop, Ruben had shared a stage with Fela, if I had known about Fela back then, I would have asked Ruben Blades about him.
His spirit hardly got emotional. As a civil rights leader and African economic franchise emancipation advocate, he hardly portrayed a soft reflection of himself especially in the fledgling times of his great defiance and struggle against bad, irresponsible governments, in underdeveloped nations, and Nigeria in particular. But after decades in the revolution, and continuous inequalities, he penned this classic, passionate, lamentation "Power Show" In my view, his penultimate composition as a professional musician. It has everything, ingredients of rhythm, blues, melody, soul, rock, funk & jazz, and a mesmerizing guitar solo for your lasting enjoyment as you imbibe the weight and content of his message sifting through your veins. Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Abami Eda - pure unadulterated African jazz. The state of Naija is just as you envisaged.Even worse ! The nation is Being run by clueless greedy and corrupt clowns 😢.Anyway , while you’re up there extend the greetings to Bob Marley , Peter Tosh , Miles Davis , prince , Michael Jackson , Tupac and all me other homies .
Heard this was made after he encountered problems with the Nigerian immigration on his way to a concert in Ghana 🇬🇭 and was running kinda late . And the way he was delayed . In his anger said he was going to cross the border without any authorisation him and his band through apparently was almost shot by Nigerian soldiers on the border
I agree with everyone who considers Power Show to be one of Fela's greatest compositions. He even played it live before Original Sufferhead came out in 1981. For example in 1978 in Berlin/Germany: th-cam.com/video/FjslhxU8dHE/w-d-xo.html
Power show self dey for our government, 2020 still banging anybody listening to this wonderful tones hit like button with me guys

Very correct. Composition is matchless

Conrad, you have done an amazing job contextualizing Baba Anikulapo Kuti's Legacy.
No other description is as indept to unravel this icon as you have done. Thanks.

If this doesn't move you, nothing will. Such power.
Nuthen of such epicness will,
VERISIMILITUDE!
Those who listened to Fela's music without pre and post instrumental are missing so much.
A highly gifted man.Too bad his life was cut short at a tender age.

Taiwo Williams àṣẹ
Yes. Taiwo. He was a genius. So are his sons.
This was in the charts when I first went to Nigeria in 1981.
Fella was not part of the human race. His intro in this music was bad ass. Rest in peace legend.
All I can say that comes to mind as I'm enjoying the music and reminiscing is Felaaa!

One of the great tunes Fela Anikulapo Kuti ever produced. Classy jazzy tune.

It has everything, ingredients of rhythm, blues, melody, soul, rock, funk & jazz, and a mesmerizing guitar solo for your lasting enjoyment as you imbibe the weight and content of his message sifting through your veins. Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Nonentities been day suffer o!
Who came here from Arise tv Rufai rendition of the song...
I agree with everyone who considers Power Show to be one of Fela's greatest compositions. He even played it live before Original Sufferhead came out in 1981. For example in 1978 in Berlin/Germany: th-cam.com/video/FjslhxU8dHE/w-d-xo.html

I can just picture conservatives jeering at liberals: "Foolish liberals/Nonentities/You go suffer for nothing"
