I remember when we used to have one-on-one talk with Baba Eleiyan the Abami eda himself back then at the African Shrine Ikeja. At exactly 2.00AM Baba must worship our Ancestors and that gives me a lot joy for a man who read abroad to still remember his background as an authentic African. Today, I thank Olodumare (God Almighty) for all what I've learnt from Fela Anikulapo Kuti and the rare privilege to have seen, interacted and learnt from him directly is something I'm very grateful to Olodumare for. To those of us who allowed Fela's ideas & undiluted teachings to pass through us must keep the flag flying everywhere we go because FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI's spirit lives in those of us who accepts who & what FELA stands for!

Those of you who met him and learnt from him please do not let his spirit sleep, he is even more needed now than when he was alive...Things don spoil finish o

Tears welling up as I watch this...infectious. And yes, Baba was versatile with pretty much all the instruments...he had such keen ears, he would single out any erring notes and the particular instrument out of a 30-man orchestra...his rehearsals were more fun than the actual performances. Fela yet lives.

October 2020. Protests in Nigeria. Protests in Guinee. Protests in Thailand. Protests in Malaysia. Protests in Pakistan. Protests in Kyrgizie. Oh, and protests in BelaRus of course.
By the way, in The Netherlands people protest agains 'mondkapjes' and lockdown of the cafés (they can't get drunk in public anymore). That's the difference I guess between peoples with real problems (and corrupt and authoritarian governments) en wealthy people with luxury problems.

SO glad someone suggested I listen to Fela maybe 10 or 12 years ago. First thing I noticed is how fast time goes listening to him (like 28 min studio version Beasts of No Nation). Then listening to his lyrics, which is no doubt what got him in trouble with the government. First time I heard this song Power Show.
There will never be another like Fela - I love hearing him play intruments... especially that keyboard.

In 1980, many of us strongly believed the music of Fela, Black Uhuru, King Sunny, Kassav, much dub, reggae and New Orleans R&B, etc., would be the world's popular music then and in the future. Then, hip-hop and rap -- which was great at the beginning -- took over the world and you see what we've got today.

Fela is still extremely relevant musically. I've never heard any one else say this but I credit him as the true father of house music. Fela pioneered the "Endless Groove" and the sophisticated musical layering that you are hearing here. As other posters have stated he is 100% invested in what he's doing musically when he performed live and has a wonderful Zen sensibility about improvisation.

While performing at the shrine, he once made the bass guitarist repeat the intro to Big Blind Country for at least three minutes because he felt he didn't get it right. It sounded fine to us, but clearly not to Fela's fine tuned ears. You could see the panic in the guitarists face as Fela walked up to him. Lol.

Because they've had too much new bullshit shoved down their throats that they don't know good music when they hear it. They must like that factory made assembly line so called music they make now. This is something many people have never and will never hear. I used to argue with people about older music and how it's better than today's stuff and this was 20 years ago, but I realized that when the people I'm arguing with only know new stuff and have never even heard of BB King, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Fela, Jimmy McGriff and so many others and I know enough of the new shit to hold a real argument but they don't know shit about anything I listen to, what the point in arguing? I can't stand arguing with someone who is completely uneducated about the topic we are debating. It's stupid and the worst part is, they think they know a lot about music lol. That would be like me arguing with a pilot about how to fky a plane. I've been on planes quite a bit, I've jumped out of airplanes 7 times, but I don't have a fucking clue how to fly the plane lol.
