As a boy at 7 years of age Hamid grew up in a building that Fred Anderson was practicing Saxophone. This little fire under his butt and he got dedicated to playing music. He played virtually every form of drum and style of drum to be found. He plays Kit and hand drum with equal ease. When did the first gigs was to play with the reggae band which provided a great foundation for his growing skills.Hamid Drake and Fred Anderson would go on to play live together as well as to record together. Both the Velvet Loungeand the AACM both started it by Fred Anderson would be integral parts of the training which made Mr Drake the player he is today. I am very lucky that I can call him a friend and then I also got to see Fred before he passed away. Fred's Spirit lives on whenever you hear someone playing jazz there's a very good chance that Fred had a direct influence on them either stylistically or as a mentor. Let's get both Fred and Hamid a rousing Applause for the inspiration they continue to provide.
Yes, it seems he can go in any direction he wants, wherever the music takes him. There are no boundaries, liberating the great late Fred Anderson as well as us listeners.
This is the impression of integration of spirituality and creativity isolated from external interference of pseudo creation. The music is pure , natural and peaceful without any statement of emotion.
love everything that it represents in the way of individuality and inner personal release..of mind, body and spirit that completely elevates you too the next level which is space i would think.
If you have not experienced Hamid Drake playing with Michael Zerang and you happen to live in the Chicago neighborhood you might want to stop by Constellation located at 3111 North Western Avenue. At 8:30 p.m. tonight they'll be doing a show and around 5:00 a.m. at the same location they'll be doing the final winter solstice celebration which celebrates the Turning of the tide from dark to light from short days to slightly longer days until we reach the spring and then the summer...... their musical journey in the morning echoes that change by starting in the dark and playing into the light..... it's an experience you won't want to miss. Occasionally alive painter or a dancer will be employed in the background is a contrast as well as in harmony to what they do. Be there.... you won't regret it I promise. Matthew aka Spiderman

Hamid Drake is an awesome drummer! Beautiful music! Thank you!
