    • @Deidredit
      @Deidredit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @Jonathan Lumbreras He answers your question around @5:42. Teleprompters break down, but it's also nice to have something physical in your hands. It feels easier than scrolling through a teleprompter and it sparks a connection between the cast and the writers.

    • @justinlinville7290
      @justinlinville7290 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      That sounds like a cop-out to allow people to retain their jobs. In 2019, theres no legitimate reason not to have these automated on teleprompters or iPads for people who "want to have something physical in their hands". This allows for cards to be a backup, avoid the chaos of re-writing cards in a time crunch, ensure each cast-member has their own color. This also leads to the question why not have the prompts in cloud docs and printed before the show so that writers have the longest timeframe to make edits.

    • @Deidredit
      @Deidredit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      @@justinlinville7290 He said one of the main reasons he does this is because a teleprompter can shut down and during a live show, nothing can be done at that point. To have physical cards insures that the show will go on. I'm a videographer and while I agree with you that it seems frustrating to continue to go down the cue card route when they have the funds and access to a decent teleprompter, I still believe the cue cards are incredibly more valuable to the show. For instance, what if someone messed up their lines, and the teleprompter kept scrolling? It would take a least a few seconds to pause the teleprompter, and then insure that the text was rolling at a decent and natural pace again. Sometimes scrolling text is difficult to read for people, especially when they're nervous and in front of a live audience. Cue cards are more easily read, and has a simple technique. Simply hold the sign up until the actor is done with their lines. If they're cracking up or the audience is laughing, keep that cue card up. Teleprompters are this whole thing, I can't tell you how long sometimes it takes to get the timing right on those damn things.

      @@Deidredit I respect your opinion on the teleprompters themselves but your reply totally avoided my other 2 solutions. As someone who works in computer programming specializing in automation there's no reason that the scripts couldn't be used as slides (no scrolling, no losing place, triggered by the same person) on devices such as iPads or keep the scripts digital and then print them day-of. In terms of technology shutting down, thats a weak excuse for the 2019 solutions I've provided and for an associated response: that's like saying they shouldn't tape the show live because of the fear that the cameras will malfunction.

      @Deidredit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@justinlinville7290 I apologize for not addressing your other points. I'm sure cloud docs would be helpful, but I'm not so sure about printing them right before the show. Do you mean to speed up the process of the actual cue card? Or do you mean "printing" as in putting the cloud docs and connecting it to the teleprompter? It's just the way they like to do it, I suppose. It seems to be working out for them after all these years so far.

      It's a waste of paper. If they print them out and realize that one word is off by a letter, they have to reprint all over again. Also, the cast must know their lines on the cue cards by color. Plus, ink is three Manhattan apartments expensive.

    • @ajsturtz
      @ajsturtz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If they used a computer they would have spell check, plus they could wait longer to begin printing the cards to give writers more revision time.
      They could drop half of their staff which would pay for the printers quickly. There are printers that can color print D size card stock in 10 seconds, less than 3 hours to print up all 1000 cards.
      They hand print because of tradition, not because it’s better than current technology.

    • @30000man
      @30000man 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You wouldn't need to print on card stock. You can print on regular paper and glue, clip, or tape it to the card. I understand what your saying about points of failure. But the printing would be done ahead of time, not live while the show is happening. Every business uses printers. They can break down occasionally, but 100%, it'd be more efficient than handwriting and re-writing every sketch multiple times

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@30000man Again, laser printer manufacturers do not make printers that accommodate paper at those large sizes. Printing and taping partial pages adds more labor and confusion to the process. They are doing script changes that can occur at the last minute up to the live broadcast. Not only can a printer stop working, a computer, a network switch, or a network cable can stop working. The time it takes to troubleshoot a problem will hold up a live production that is being broadcast to millions of viewers. I've worked with teleprompter systems on a taped production once a month since 1991 and there was always some equipment that went wrong in the process. The amount of problems we get and the amount of time it takes to troubleshoot them cannot be tolerated on a nationwide live production. _SNL_ has been using cue cards for 861 episodes and that manual system works for them. Unless you have actually worked on a high-pressure live television production, you are in no position to suggest changes to a system that has worked for them for 44 years.

      RaymondHng I work in an engineering company. We have printers that can print to 6 feet wide and 300 feet long. Trust me, there are printers that can print to any size they need. The salary of 8 people is more than the cost of a plotter for sure. But anyways, the point was they could modernize this. But the video's point is that they clearly don't want to modernize this because it's kind of become a part of the show.. so it's kind of a moot point. I was just making an observation of the inefficiency :)

      @@30000man My friend has one of those Epson three-foot wide printers. It is not a laser printer. These ink jet-based, wide-format printers do not print fast enough for this fast-paced environment. Also, the printer does not work alone. Computers, networking equipment, and network and electrical cabling are required. You will need personnel to operate and troubleshoot all that equipment. You are only a casual observer looking at the tip of the iceberg. Your work in an engineering company gives you no credibility to suggest system overhauls in a fast-paced nationwide live television production, let alone a local monthly taped production. My hands-on experience working in television production since 1991 and working in IT since 1982 says your solution will not work.

    What kind of qualifications do you need to get a job writing cue cards? Is the entire application just - please write this in caps as neatly as possible?
