such off the beaten track, mostly industrial sections of town exist in many American cities. I;ve seen them. All parts of NYC and the U.S. are not first world. It's just that you just discovered that. In fact more countries than not have the same areas of the city. They are everywhere.

There are places in California that look like this, I imagine that every city has places like this, but in NYC its surprising it hasnt veen razed to the ground and replaced with housing for the wealthy.
