Crank sensor...feeds the tach and charging system..if tach isnt working battery is being charged

Correct. Although this is the culprit most of the time, due to the age of these trucks, bad grounds, and broken conductors in the wiring harness can also wreak havoc. Fun fact, the tach, and shifting issue have returned, only now the symptoms are a little different. Now the tach needle will sometimes bounce higher even though the rpms are steady. While driving, the trans will drop out of over drive when I hit a pump. I'm thinking TPS, for he shifting issue, maybe intermittent ground for the tach issue.

PS. I believe :: The olden harmonic balancer moves around allot more that when new . It is what rubbed / ruined your OEM adjusted perfectly ESS. Thanks for your work on this

I’m having similar issues but can’t find the problem, it’s not the pcm bcuz I tried it on another truck and it worked it’s not crank sensor it’s new and I only get .40 volts at the harness, I’m thinking I’m not getting power to the pcm ? Where or what wire gets the power to the pcm ? You have that schematic any way you can look it up?
    Let me know
    Thanks

I printed that diagram from online. Check the connections inside the junction fuse box on top of the drivers side inner wheel well. They get corroded.

Did you replace the ESS , i may have missed that . AND is there a part 3 , AND did the Tach ever drop out again ?? Thanks

Replacing the Crank Sensor resolved the issue completely.

Please its the ESS . You are going to confuse people with calling it CPS . LOve your Vid !! Thanks

Thank you for the comments. To be clear, I call it what I call it based on reading numerous forum threads, and reading parts descriptions. I may have even called it different things as the videos progressed due to learning as I go. I do reaalize this same sensor has a different job in the diesel vs gas engine. The 12 valves do not have an ECM (engine control module), the 12 valves have a PCM (powertrain control module). The difference is an ECM receives input from the crank position sensor, and several other sensors, and sends control signals to the electronically controlled injection pump. Since the 12 valve has a purely mechanical pump, there is no need for an ECM, but the PCM uses that crank sensors input to tell it engine speed so it can control shifting in the automatic transmission. So a PCM only cares about how fast the crank is turning, and IF it is turning, since that sensor is the only way the PCM knows if the engine is running. That is why the charging system will shut off when the tach drops out due to a bad sensor. I think I may clarify this in Part 3:

mind interested now when it works and recharges the battery. if you now disconnect the sensor, the battery will stop charging. did I understand correctly?

  • @cheeto4493
    @cheeto4493 6 ปีที่แล้ว

typical, just when you are all ready it works fine. Did you jiggle the wires some more when it was working fine? I'm betting a bad wire down there somewhere. The 6.4l GM diesels were bad about having faulty grounds that would mess up sensors.

No change. Drove it again today after it sat all week. Put on about 30 miles, and the tach never failed once. Very infuriating!

@@chrisbrown6516 I spliced in a wire so I could monitor the voltage going to the sensor. Then the problem went away, then the bad weather, so I'll try again now that we're getting some mild weather moving into the area.

Having the same issues I got a new pcm. Question is I’m not getting 5v coming out of pcm to supply. What would cause this? I’ve been through 2 pcm thinking that was the problem. Why would I not have 5v coming from pcm to wires.

You may want to invest in some piercing probes. They are on my want list. Pomona makes some nice ones but are near $50.

HELLO. I hope someone sees this comment, I was having all of these symptoms on my 97 dodge ram diesel, 12 valve Cummins. I FIXED IT. It's been 2 weeks no problems, I found a bad wire connection coming off my air intake temperature sensor on the head on drives side. The sensor is hooked to one other wire, I sodered them ,and no problem since. .check it out.

Glad you found your problem. I to have been trouble free for over a month. In my case it was a bad crankshaft sensor. But as I mentioned in part 1, this symptom has several possible causes, and the wiring is definitely one possibility.
