    Alexis, I've been subscribed and following your channel for a while now. I really enjoy your explanations of how you use knots. I haven't searched all your older videos, but if you haven't already done a video about knots, I would really love to see a video of different knots. How they are made and where they would be useful.

    Maybe not such an exciting video but it's nice to learn new tricks and in the wild what you carry in your head is often more important than what's on your back. I like your prusik knot toggle method of attaching your tarp to ridgeline. I will be using that in the future. It's nice to find other Ontario tubers. Keep it up.

    Not to sound lazy ,but i use the coghlan fire starter sticks while canoeing . A half stick ,saves you the hassle of looking for kindling or birch bark, which can be tough around many Algonquin campsites. Where portaging isn't a big deal noticed fatwood at places like home depot,walmart etc. Cheap and will get a stubborn fire going.
    Important thing is being out there , no matter how successful you are at any task. Experience will do the trick in the long run.

    • @careenaalexis
      @careenaalexis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've never really considered buying those. I'm sure they work awesome but I'm just too stubborn, I always feel the need to use my skills and knowledge, and I feel like with all the practice I've had, if I can't get a fire going using natural materials than I don't deserve it hahahaha

    I ordered a MSR Rendezvous Sun Shield Wing Canopy Camping Shelter, 120 Square Foot. You don’t need the trees with it. Hopefully it will set up easy. But I do plan to try it your way sometime.
    I bring a little petroleum jelly because it catches a spark and burns for awhile. And an alcohol stove is also great for drying out wood and starting a bigger fire.

    Well done, Alexis! Persistence paid off. That old adage is true. When at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again and again. We woodsmen (and woods women) have all been there. That Aqua Quest silnylon tarp was a good investment. Mine is one of the first ones on the market and still intact after years of use and abuse. Your Adirondack version isn't perfect but if it works...great! Any time in the woods is far better than any time in the office. Bushcraft is not a perfect science and experiences like this will only help you to improve your outdoor skills. You are obviously multi-talented and it's a pleasure to watch your videos.

    I have the same backpack. Lol. It’s been across Temagami, Algonquin, crown land, and everywhere else in between. Have run it threw the wash and it’s stood up perfectly. Love those days when ya have any excuse to just get out in the bush. Fun times.

    Hi. A tip for you to make it easy and nicer. You can get a old medicine bottle and take cotton balls and work Vaseline into them. Stuff them in to the bottle, when you use them pull one out at a time, fluff it up good. They usually lite on the first try. Small and easy. I would also recommend you put a base under your fire before starting it. That will help it from melting the snow and falling in and going out. Just some ideas. I hope you find them helpful.

      I go out to practice without homemade tinders so that if I'm ever left without I can start a fire through my experience with natural tinders. Bringing out prepared tinders like vaseline and cotton balls would completely defeat the purpose of practicing my fire making skills in the first place.

      Also I did have a small base underneath my fire. Not every intention is mentioned in videos so I understand your comment comes from a good place, but it can be difficult to explain the reason why we do everything in a video. I did not have a huge base under my fire because I was not going to be there long enough to need one. But yes when I need a long lasting fire I always put a good base of split logs underneath it to shield from the snow, as is shown in almost all of my other videos.

    You should always have a fire kit on you in the woods with dry tinder , cotton balls with petroleum jelly on it, or other bunch craft fire extenders, and a spare lighter

    Bungies are quick to set up one on each corner, wrap around the tree and hook it on itself. Get a tarp up in seconds. Set the tarp up low keeps the wind out and rain of you. You can set your tarp up at any angle. Have fun!

    I'd say your 12th try in wet conditions and materials is not too bad. Ya need to pack a little fire kit, but maybe you already do. Nice job with the tarp. I suckered when it comes to knots. I really need to spend some time and learn some. Back when I was in my early teens, I spent the the whole winter practice how to tie fishing knots. I hope the turns nice for you and you're able to get out a bit more. Catch Ya next time.

    • @careenaalexis
      @careenaalexis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank Chris!! I have brought fire kits in the past, but I never end up using them because I figure if I'm not in a survival situation, why not just always practice with stuff I would have on me in a bad situation, which is always my firesteel. Sometimes it would be nice to have a bit of fire starter probably, but ultimately, I'm always very happy to get through without ... Cuz I'm stubborn that way haha

    • @CheezeheadChris
      @CheezeheadChris 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All very true. But when does it become a survival situation? What would happen if you slipped and fell and severely sprained an ankle or broke a leg? It happened to me. Happened to me almost 5 years ago. Was out walking my dogs on our back 80. Weather conditions similar to what you were experiencing. I slipped and fell and completely tore my patella tendon.(it's what attaches you upper and lower leg together and keeps your knee cap in place.) You can't walk when that happens. All I had on me was my swiss army knife. Accidents happen whenever and where ever. A small ziploc of birch always comes in handy. Not trying to preach. I just try to use my ordeal as learning tool.

    • @careenaalexis
      @careenaalexis  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CheezeheadChris True. I guess I just feel like I'm always practicing so that even in a survival situation that I'm not prepared for, I will have to skill set to get myself through.
