I saw this video today after I watched the interview with David Rubenstein on BNN Bloomberg TV. Yo-Yo Ma, you have changed my life with your carefully chosen words. As a guitar teacher for 14 years during my university days which lead me to become an Organic Scientist, I had read music with a passion but could rarely remember a piece without the music. This put a lot of stress and disappointment on myself for many years. Your statement ...."being a musician is internal development" and most importantly..."if you want to memorize pieces, do that before your 21 years old, because whatever you learn before 21 you remember forever, after your 40 ....forget it". I now realize that my mind was conflicted with developing my science, much prioritized over, the advancement of my music in those now early years. You have freed me of the pressure of trying to memorize pieces today at 68 years old, and can now just embrace and enjoy my music with the help of notation and your words. I greatly thank-you !!!!
