  • The Vive Flow is HTC's new VR headset for consumers. With this standalone headset they want to appeal to a whole new customer segment: non VR-enthusiasts that would use the headset for well-being and media consumption. But does HTC succeed and do they reclaim the consumer market? Find out in my unboxing and first impressions video!

    What do you think of the Vive Flow? Would that be worth it 500 bucks for you?

    • @lukeconsumerofcontent
      @lukeconsumerofcontent 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not worth the 500 since the lack of an included controller and internal battery. Though it's really exciting seeing headsets in the formfactor. It's really crazy how small headsets can get using pancake lenses and micro oled.

      I know when you tested the Lynx R1 you experienced more AR demos, however how did the resolution of the vive flow compare to the Lynx R1? Since the 2 devices have the same supposed resolution, I am curious if what you experienced here was the same, better or worse on the Lynx?

    • @AndresSanchez-kv6zp
      @AndresSanchez-kv6zp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Flow isn't exciting for what it is, but for what it foretells. This flow is too low-powered, has low resolution, and is just not worth the money for what it includes, but FUTURE headsets in this formfactor will be AWESOME! Imagine if the screen was instead a Micro-oled screen? THEN it would have been worth it. The Flow 2 will definitely be worth checking out.

    Definitely an interesting device. but for $500 US, I would have asked for 3 more features. [1] Hand tracking, [2] ability to use as an HMD for PC/steam VR via the USB C cable, and [3] Controller sold separately or usable with others after pairing. Make those changes in the upcoming updates and they'll have me sold.

      @@amendus It may simply be because they had to announce way too early in an attempt to beat facebook to some big news, which turned out to be a dud anyway. So let's wait and see. I'm hopeful for HTC to continue working on hardware (controllers?) and software for the Flow.

      @@BrianPeiris I am hopeful as well. I read somewhere the USB was power only, but that's hard to believe with tech today. Most of my wishlist can be done via updates, so I am hoping for spring to bring a V2.

      Maybe virtual desktop will solve the pcvr side of things, but that depends on how good it's wifi is. Personally the USB should of been considered for pcvr. For the price it has to be more than a phone companion for watching video. The cheaper quest can do that too plus play games natively and from pc so why would you buy this for $200 more and not be able to do all that. Great potential but they need to offer more with some updates.

      But it is already too expensive before you add all the accessories. And if you don't use your phone you need a separate battery pack. So all that low weight and wireless form factor is lost. And media apps on phones are still not mature enough to be fully featured, with high resolution and decent audio options. Eg Atmos capable phones don't get Atmos sound tracks etc. Here you would need a proper 3d audio codec that copes with head position as well. Is that translation in the headset?

  • @64jcl

    One thing I have been wondering about with regards to these slim VR devices is how they could be used for productivity. I can see two features needed in order to make that a better experience. One is hand tracking so it at least knows something about the position of your hands, the other is some way to mark your physical keyboard and mouse so that the VR cameras know where they are and hence your virtual hands are actually reaching for their physical counterpart keyboard/mouse. I can imagine it could be a very productive environment as you can have as many screens you want around you as well as 3d-models or whatever rocks your boat at a work place. A user has to be able to use his hands to the fullest and needs access to full keyboards too.

    NGL, form wise it looks amazing and well done. I also like that it is light and you can adjust the lenses for those with a bad eyesight like me. As for the PHONE as a controller, well it's Unique I give it that and in the context of being a "general viewing device" it kinda makes sense since it seems HTC is pushing for phone casting and media consumption. I wonder how it would be like to cast emulation? Having a private space to play emulator games would be a good experience. Anyway, it is good for what it is - a general media consumption device and not for a total VR experience. As to price, it will be a deal breaker for many. Anyway, If you are a gamer, there are better choices out there so whether or not you like this device will depend on what kind of VR experience you are looking for.

    That looks so cool! The new generation of headsets is just looking promising, especially the lenses and the form factor. I can't wait to the new Project Cambria headset from Oculus, which is said to have about 2700x2700 per eye... and OMG, if you pair that with new amazing lenses technology, oled colors and this small form factor, it will just be mind blowing. I just purchased the Vive Flow, actually I purchased it back in Nov but just got around to setting it up. It took a little while to set up. Most of the set up time was taken on two updates that took aprox 10 minutes each. The other thing that took some time was to keep going back and forth to my phone settings to allow or turn on certain settings that were required with the device to work properly.
    It took some time to get used to the phone as a controller, (still working on that) but the clarity and sound was very good. I also noticed some severe limitations in comparison to my Oculus Quest. Other than that I am pretty satisfied. Oh, and I didn't get my case that I was promised. I had to order one at $47.53, (They gave me a $1.47 product discount???) plus $7.17 Tax and $17.00 for freight. Total price for my free case turned out to be $71.70. I believe you mentioned something about not paying over $20.00 for a piece of plastic.
    Anyway I am now into it for over $600. To be honest, I am looking forward to having it since I travel a lot for work and it'll be great for those 5 hour plane flights, but knowing what I know so far, (not that much since I spent most of my time to use it, setting it up) I think you can do much better for one third of the price investing in an Oculus Quest. I hope further use of this Vive Flow will prove me wrong, and that they do continue to add Apps, and perfect the Hand movement controls I heard they were working on. Thank you for your review, I found it helpful to further my need to learn about this device. Oh and BTW...You looked just fine wearing the device without any photoshop necessary. Still looks better than when wearing the Quest! Happy VR everyone!

    It is like an android phone with BT, it should be able to handle some controllers that a Android can use, so Xbox controllers or that cool Steam controller if folk still have it, keyboard and mouse should work, I think it would even be possible to use Oculus controllers if the camera can see the leds and the player hold the hands so the controllers always are in line of site for the cameras. But I think I would like those glasses, I am not so much into fast gaming but rather explore the Earth, and look into VR-worlds, maybe also keep experimenting with a virtual work area that can remote connect to my PC so I can see it on a virtual screen.

    Thanks for sharing this video! I really enjoy my VIVE Flow and found myself using it more and more daily (more than my Quest 2 since I do media more than gaming). I also like to carry it around by just hanging it on my shirt as you would normal sunglasses.
    One thing you missed is that the carrying bottle cap ceiling actually has the mechanics for you to store the cord. Did you notice that?
    Finally, I believe there are high chances that we’ll see handtracking of this in the future as it would make the experience a lot more dynamic when you can use two hands to control the experience.
    Really appreciate the good work!

    I'm fed up with all this new hmd with small FOV, it's time for a real immersion in VR without limit, of course this is just my point of view (I admit that in terms of resolution we have reached the minimum sweet spot)

    • @milannesic5718
      @milannesic5718 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, and if Oculus announced "high end" HMD have small FOV, it is not really high end. Form factor will be the only advantage. Probably better resolution, but better resolution is expected, even for the low end iterations

    • @NextWorldVR
      @NextWorldVR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same here. FOV is #1 immersion factor for me. Pimax can't be the only player. Pimax is WARPED, Alex basically hired me before Covid to make 2 free bundle games and a trade show mini-multi game for their Sword and Sword Sense controllers, promising to send hardware to work on and then just ghosted me after I did months of work building the most elaborate Sword game elements and I was even starting to code melee gameplay. Bad mojo.

    • @ZedDevStuff
      @ZedDevStuff 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but remember that a bigger FOV needs a bigger screen which needs more performance, they would have to wait for a new XR chip, or a more powerful alternative since they milked as much performance as possible in the quest 2

    I don’t understand why they didn’t make optional 6 DOF controllers which could be made for a reasonable price. If they had put IR lights all over the unit then a controller with a camera could be used to track controllers. Even if this was $200-300 more it would beat the price of the focus 3 and be an actual competitor to the quest. From what I’ve seen, they are targeting a different audience and using the product image to seem high quality which make people pay more. It’s the same reason why Payless Shoes can upcharge their price when they put them in an expensive looking store. Maybe the Vive Flow will be seen in a Vive store similar to Apple and also what Oculus wants to do. They can’t get the games, so they are building their own platform based on the hyper casual market which I sort of understand and sort of don’t. They are abandoning their core competencies in favor of new ones in a different market simply because Oculus is being a monopolist. I think that if Vive really wants to survive, they’ll do a 180 at some point. I don’t think they can sustain themselves like this, if they make this headset $1,000 but add everything, they will have a better headset over Oculus. If Vive then buys game studios and produces new games to be exclusive on their platform, they can make a comeback because they’ll have real skin in the game to actually say they’re product is better. Here’s what I say, the Vive Flow has a real competitive advantage over the Quest 2 and the Quest 3 won’t even be properly announced until next year. If Vive works quick they can seize the market by rebranding the Flow for pro gamers. Lets be honest, a super light wireless PCVR headset would be worth $1,000 to gamers, $1,500 even. So if I was Vive, I might partner with steam a bit more to get integration with wireless PCVR faster and better than the Quest 2. This could be the comeback of a lifetime, but only if they get it in their head that they can win.

    This is just an shower thought here... But I just was thinking of instead of hand tracking why not arm tracking. Sounds stupid I know. But think about it, if you can track your arm your phone controller (or whatever Vive wants to call it.) can be come a 6dof controller.

    Never before has there been an hmd that more desperately cried out for finch controller support. The Finch ring is practically designed for this thing. And they already have a marketing partnership with vive. One little software driver is all it would take to make this a slam dunk.
