  • Listen: • Tom Waits - "Bad As Me"
Tom Waits' latest album, rather than showing a new side to the eccentric singer-songwriter, it somewhat of a retrospective, revisiting the numerous sounds that have made this guy so "bad" for all these years.
What do you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh?

"Dropping a boulder in a kiddie pool". That's the perfect way to describe the first time I heard Tom Waits.
Blood Money was the first album of his I heard. Prior to him, I was mostly into heavy metal. After Tom Waits, my tastes changed so drastically that I'm listening to stuff that I never would have even considered several years ago. My kiddie pool has a deep end now. Great review!

I actually love "Bad as Me". I bought my copy at Starbucks. I too am a huge fan of Tom Waits. But like you I had to immerse myself into his music and research his work before I really came to love his music. Now? Now I can't get enough of him. I listen to him every day. It is more than an obsession. I'm addicted to Waits. I believe he is the most under rated musician in the world and I would still say that if he won entertainer of the year. My favorite album of his is Mule Variations.

These comments are kind of hilarious. Because someone doesn't give a staggering 10/10 reviews of a legend like Tom Waits. They get bent out of shape! geesh, this is one guys opinion. Y'all are acting more sensitive than Beyonce or Lady GaGa fans. And that's saying a lot!
Come on brosephs and tomskis. A 7 out of 10 is not a bad review... and beyond that. It's one guys opinion, right? if you think it's a 10, 7, or 5 great! this is why we have differing opinions right? here's a hug and beer for all you grieving fans. There, There

This review reflects how I felt when I first heard the record. I especially agree that Kiss Me sounds a lot like Blue Valentine, and Raised Right Man sounds a bit like a Heart Attack... jam.
But I wonder how you feel about this record now that you've had a few months to live with it, because for me it's taken on its own character and what I thought were weaker tracks have really started to shine. All those references to the past seem more superficial now and the album really stands up.

Heeyyyy Anthony, so would you compare this Album songs with (Looking for) The Heart of Saturday Night, i mean, is that good to include a song of "Bad as me" as one of the favorites for a Waits fan? Im saying cuz i trust your reviews and i want your opinion, thanks dude!!!

good review Anthony, you know your stuff and you've done your homework, musician and 30+year Tom fan here. One somewhat glaring omission for me was mention of the bonus-track song 'Tell Me,' a rather radical departure from the other tunes past and present, in that it's soft and fluffy and sweet. Also, you discussed 'Last Leaf' but didn't mention the guest vocalist: Keith Richards! pretty huge cameo I'd say. Anyway, good stuff, thanks.

understand where youre coming from, and see your point. I am a huge Tom Waits fan and love almost everything he does. To me, it's nice to hear and feel talent when everything in popular music sounds similar and alike with very shallow lyrics and vwry little thought process. With Bad As Me I to did hear some revisiting sounds from previous Albums. But listening to it a few times, and it has alot of incredients that I always enjoy hearing in a Tom Waits Albu m.

"Just start with Rain Dogs." - Couldn't agree more -great advice for the newbie to Tom's music. I just hooked up a hiphop friend with Tom--with Bone Machine--let him chew on that one for awhile, heh.
I appreciate your candor & detailed insight into Tom's new album, Anthony. Since you asked - yeah, I myself love BAD AS ME, tho' I do agree with you that it's definitely more of a "retrospective" album, than another "ground breaker". Yet the more I listen to it--the more I love it.

Coliseum - Parasites EP. It doesn't drop until November the 15th, but I picked it up on tour and It's easily my favorite release of the year.
Also, having checked this out, I didn't find it very memorable. I agree that he kind of retreads familiar territory. His take on Auld Lang Syne in New Years Eve was kind of perfect though. I came away with a desire to check out everything he's done that I haven't explored already... but that speaks more to him than to this particular album.

@trupianod Depends what you want: desolation; nostalgia; pop; experimental; grit; tragedy; comedy; blues; rock and roll etc. I find his earlier stuff more "pop" sounding--especially as he hadn't grappled with his gritty voice and was focused more on jazz/ blues style tunes. So something like Heartattack and Vine. Nighthawk at the Diner is tragically comical and has this sort of club feel to it. And Swordfishtrombone is when Waits really started to get experimental.

It's short and sweet and yes, it does come back to a lot of things he has done in the past. It's a good Tom Waits starter album for someone who never heard anything by him before but obviously not the greatest of his discography. For what the songs are they are beautifully crafted, each in it's own way. There is a common thread of swingin' jazz that flows through the whole album with the subtle sax strikes and piano playing. However, it isn't his best work but it's slowly growing on me.

    @krs80man 12 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with you that it has no specific stand out sound to it that defines it like the other ones do, but in a way I think that is what he was going for here. It kind of brings together all the styles he has created over the years all the way from the clean sounds on closing time to the gritty feel of bone machine and real gone. It doesn't flow as nicely as I would have hoped for but I feel the production is very consistent through out and that it is very likable.

    I'd give it an 8 or 8 1/2. Blood money 9 1/2

I agree it's not one of his best albums, as the best one for me are Blue Valentines, Frank's Wild Years and The Heart of Saturday Night, but I think it's an awesome album. He's still creative as he's always been and shows so much passion and soul in every soul. I don't think it's the bad thing that he didn't go into the whole new direction as you've expected. This is the album I wanted to hear from him and I love it. :D

I agree about the "touchstone" nature of this album, though that in itself creates a theme--could signal conservatism, or it could allow Mr. Waits to focus on his songs, which are absolutely excellent. Waits has about 86 songs that could go over Big Black Mariah, and Satisfaction is one of his best stompers. And Kiss Me just sounds cliched because it's such a classic song I want to dig up Sinatra corpse and make him sing it. The touchstones shine: Some of his best songs. Thoughtful review.

Had in essence the same thought like you: Tom failed to bring us something new... a new style or angle of approach. Having played it over&over I think it's really a great album! There isn't a bad song on it. The haunting&hairraising crown jewel is Hell Broke Luce! Chicago; Raised Right Men; Satisfied & Bad As Me also stand out. Fine ballads too. All lyrics are among his best. And Marc Ribot... boy!

@mikefiftynine I honestly do not know what I wanted....perhaps I wanted him to mellow with age? There is just too much Rock and Roll in this CD for my taste. I will reserve full judgement until I can listen to it in several different "head spaces". I often find that the records I love most are the ones I did not care for at first. My problem with Glitter and Doom is that it is too noisy, fuzzy and unclear, but then perhaps it's just my hearing going due to old age.

I dunno why people are against a Coldplay review, another very talented group of people who just happen to have a few hits. Tom Waits has won grammy's, does that make him too mainstream?
I for one would love to see a Coldplay review,

@LoveMetal33: With Tom Waits theres a lot of details: see how he says Satisfied sounds so much as Big Black Mariah from Rain Dogs? Smart notice on the guy. Both songs are separeted by 26 years and the guitar was made by the same guest: Keith Richards. He went tru this album pretty well and his review its actually the most real i've heard. I consider Bad As Me as one of Wait's worst albums; but considering it's an amazing album, we can say Waits doesnt have bad albums... just diferent ones.

I really liked it, and I'd agree with you that the backing vocals on "Last Leaf" are less than awesome, but that was really the only song I had any problem with. You're right that there isn't a unifying theme here, but that didn't keep me from liking it any less.
