- Anna Johansson och Robert Carlsson fäller en ek med en medeltidsyxa. Virket ska användas till kyrkdörren i rekonstruktionen av Södra Råda medeltidskyrka. Filmen är inspelad i Ullene, Västergötland den 27 augusti 2015. Kameror, ljud, intervju och klipp Anders Lundvang. En film från Hantverkslaboratoriet 2015.

Very good axe work Anna. I am very interested in the potential of light axe heads on longer shafts. I have a 1.5lb JB Stohler head I mounted on to a 26" shaft and it is a very powerful chopper (straight wedge profile). I find the wedged profile very effective. I experiment with old Billnas Axes, some of which have very thick wedges. Of course, centuries ago, many axes had a long narrow head on a long straight shaft. The power from the shaft drives the narrow cutting edge deep into the wood

Thank You very much Jean-Pierre. The ax is a reconstruction of an ax, found in the Old Lödöse (Gamla Lödöse, about 40 kilometers north of the current Gothenburg). The original ax is dated to before 1350. The reconstructed ax is brand new, it's the first time it is used. It is forged by the blacksmith Bertil Pärmsten.

May I ask how long handles were used in felling this oak? Looks like more than 90 cm. Also, what species of tree was used?
Hey Dan, I sent your question to the expert on the subject, this is the answer: The handle of the ax is just 90 cm long and made of ash (Latin: Fraxinus Excelsior). A Straight-grained ash young with high density has been used. Growth rings running across the ax which gives a less rigid shank.
This is the expert's entire answer in Swedish: Skaftet var just 90 cm och var gjort av ask/Fraxinus Excelsior (med hög densitet) med liggande årsringar/årsringarna tvärs yxan vilket ger ett mindre stumt skaft, skaftämnet är kluvet ur en rakvuxen ung ask, fyra ämnen per stockbit.

Correct, 90cm long. You get a very good balance with the weight. It was perfect for me and also my colleague who is about 20cm longer than me.

Anna here, who took the oak down. The balance between the light weight ax and handles at 90cm makes you get att very good precision in the chipping process. A heavy one is no use...

Not the way I was taught, a sudden wind from a different direction, you not going to hold nor pull the tree back. Lucky is all I'm going to say.
The rope is not for pulling, but more for feeling.
So, this was solely about felling one tree .. and not about the reconstruction of a medieval church ..

Meiss not necessarily, besides which speed is of no interest here. the point of this felling, and the point of the whole church reconstruction process is the exploration and revival of traditional techniques using traditional tools, in this case from the early medieval period. american pattern axes did not begin to be developed until the 1700s.
