Duck & Dive refers the Battle of The Big Hole Basin in Montana in 1877 between the Nez Perce tribe & U.S. Army.
Chief Joseph wanted to take his people from Oregon over to Canada to be free from U.S. Govt.
The Army chased the tribe, but they fought very well, and kept going thru some of the roughest terrain.
When the reached Big Hole, two different Army regiments attacked. They had a Howitzer cannon, each time it shot a cannonball, the warriors would Duck, and Dive for cover.
The cannon shot is represented as a strong Downbeat on the drum, and dancers must Duck on that downbeat.
Ultimately, the Army had the tribe blocked from reaching Canada, and Chief Joseph was very sad his people were dying, he said " from where the Sun now stands, I fight no more, forever."
Duck & Dive song is performed for the male northern traditional dancers in memory of that battle.

Thank you for that insight, knew there was history trying to be explained. Just could not hear the annoucing so well. Here in Canada the D n D is explained by, the Redcoats and Bluecoats using FNs ppl as cannon foder and battles were so close , intense and inline that the cannon shots had to be ducked from and dived from. lol Different stories from different place. Aho. Thank You.
