- First part of a multipart series about the digital coloring of faces and skin tones. Feel free to leave suggestions for the next parts and whatnot.
The lineart is available on deviantart! You can download it and paint along if you are so inclined!

This one isn't a great example of quality by any stretch, but sadly that is one of the side effects of multitasking with talking/recording. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
one thing I like about Sinix is that he doesn't use too many fancy/formal art terms, Whereas others might use terms like "carving the light", or "finding the sculptural form." He walks it through like someone would go through it just by observation and trial and error :)
in reality you should. It shows that you understand what you are doing and can explain it as a proffesional. It also helps with analysis of your own work and indicating mistakes.
Дмитрий Медведев It really doesn't, the specific language you use doesn't indicate how well you grasp the concept.
Zulul Omegalul ironically m from what I’ve seen on TH-cam, the people that have used this language came out with the most ashy or unnatural looking skin tones
These are the tutorials that are most resonating with me. No pretentious terms or explanations, just simple and honest description of your technique. Thanks!
my favorite part was around 16:33 when you added that variety of colors. Most non artistic people would think that would be crazy but it looks awesome.
Yes
Everytime I'm stuck with my drawings I'll just watch your videos and get inspired again ~
Nice voice btw, very relaxing :D
@hilltophorror The DeviantART videos certainly seem to inspire a perception of snarkiness, but I really do enjoy looking at the art and learning to understand what goes into my own opinions. The motivational for the tutorials started as an exercise for my own coagulation of knowledge on a subject, but I am actually trying to just help people with what I can these days. I'm always happy when people get anything positive out of them. Thanks for the feedback.
@Lovedoctersar There's no blending tool, it's just the opacity setting on the brush and pressing lightly. I tried not to blend the strokes much, because it's fun to be able to see them in the art.
not even half way in and this is already one of the most helpful tutorials i've watched.
@HeanzoArt Cheers indeed! Making videos always has a way of being harder than I expect.
Matte painting generally refers to the painting of a photo-realistic backdrop for use in movies/screen work. Often done over photographs.
Dude for a 12 year old video this is still so extremely helpful. This is what I’ve been looking for instead of all the videos that go into fragments. I just needed it all together. Thank you
@Squeezyness Probably. I'll keep that in mind for when I've finished up this skin tones section.
I’m 17 now.... this video came out when I was 7
Sinix u grandpa
same lol
Thank you so much. Have been struggling painting on the iPad. Seeing this whole proces helps so much.
Nice to see you doing demos again. I've found your style of narration very comfortable to follow and understand.
Copy and paste the whole image to a new layer and set the layer property to multiply. Create another layer underneath and paint there.
Do you have a download of the brush you use?
Yes
makes me want to get back into drawing/painting thank you
cant wait to see more
@bsizzle89 Thanks! That reminded me to put the lineart up on DA.
Wow, this is awesome! You really know a lot and I like your thick painterly style... Hoping for alot more of these :)
I use Corel Painter.
Dude I love your stuff
Yep, definitely learned something! Thanks for sharing these videos! Awesomenesss!!
@bengoshia Hah. It's fun to critique art though. Figuring out why things look bad is just as important as understanding why things look good.
Nice work. So many faces done well.
These vids are really useful thanks Sinix!
Nice way of digital painting
This tutorial is so much more helpful if you paint along side him.Awesome.
Great tutorial. I really appreciate you sharing this. I wll refer to this often.
I really like your freedom of expression. I'm a beginner and one of the hardest things for me is to be less perfectionistic.
THE COME BACK THAT I WASN'T AWARE OF
Hahahahaha!!! I love you, Sinix..."Stay away from blacks!" That just killed me, man xD
informative and it made me giggle too :) thanks man!
Wallstreet Journal is going to love this :D
This is really great man.
I am really thankful for sharing your knowledge with us! :)
cool! this confirms what i just read in James Gurneys book 'Color and Light' where he explains the whitish, reddish and greenish/bluish parts of the face. Thanks a lot!
thank you so much for this! you are my spirit animal hahah
Hey Sinix, quick question: how do you practice?
I ask because I feel that I can draw a picture or model pretty accurately given enough time. However, I still kinda suck at drawing faces and body proportions, especially when I try making a comic or short animation or just painting a generic portrait off the top of my head. Any exercises you're especial keen on? Thanks!
you know, i really learned a little bit today about skin tones and high lighting. My skin tones have been flat and one dimensional. this can really help me get it to pop.
@MissJeriB Glad to hear traditional artists are enjoying these. Thanks.
Everything is digital.
this is soooo good, thank you.
Thanks for these tutorials man. Subscribing
Thanks for posting this! Really helpful!
Wonderful, even though I use CS. This excites me when I go back to do some digital art lol.
great stuff man! can you tell me more about the brush you are using? is pressure linked to both opacity and size? what are you blend / resaturation settings?
boi it took me 5 minutes to realise its 360p video from ancient times xDD
Nice tutorial, very helpful!
That's fantastic, thank you!
I Like this one...i think i could really follow this one and learn something. This pass, i was just watching, next time i'll actually painting something while i play this video as reference in the background
9 years....dayumnnn ❤️❤️❤️
You mentioned using an opacity brush. Could you maybe explain how ur brush works? And can i create the same type of brush in photoshop?
Those lips bits are called "pillars". You are probably aware of that 9 years later but I'm here learning basic skin colouring.
THANK YOU.
hi!)) I love it! Tell me please, if you draw in Painter, what brush do you use? Which brush contours and how to paint.
Hey there, I didn't catch your brush properties for that nice soft brush with a bit of ink transfer. What are they, and what brush are you using? Btw, thank you for posting such tutorials! They are very helpful
I rather enjoyed this one. Thanks for posting it. :)
Just observing ts and i'm already learning how to color and draw light
How do you get such crisp line art? Mine always have a weird wobble...
@L1qu1d S1lenc3r I know this comment is old, but thanks for the tips, mate. Not many people take the time to share their knowledge with those who need it. 😉👌
@@sealman3153 ayo what did he say?
@@lady-philomena he said he went into the settings and upscaled the uranous value
your voice is so cute ^_^
great stuff. thanks
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T WANT ANY BLACKS??!!? looool.
Your work is inspirational- you are so talented! My husband and I are wondering how you record yourself while working - which program/software do you use? TFS!
Search "how to record pc screen" on TH-cam. U welcome.
thank you for doing this without speed up
did you ink this traditionally? btw nice work!
What kind of brush is that? Great job!
man, thank you very much, very helpful tutorial, coloring and lighting are explained well.. like sub...
what brush have you used for the lineart? what one would you recomend in photoshop?
Do you use a drawing tablet or a program or on a computer? I’ve always done traditional myself, and recently I wanted to go out of my comfort zone and do digital. This tutorial helped me a lot but still not where I want it to be, tips?
@OnlySolitude Its corel painter
@sinixdesign Hey bro could you tell me what brushes you use? Im new to painter and I really like that "horizontal" looking brush.
and should i work with flow and opacity or just set the brush on transfer?
Who needs art school ive got Sinix :P
Hi! I'm really keen on doing some graffity designs before doing them in a wall so I'm looking for a good graphic tablet. The problem is that I'd like to find a cheap and suitable one to do it. Would you recommend me one in particularly? Which is the one that you use?
Could you do a tutorial about clothes? They give me such a hard time X(
@jusjerry4 thanks! :)
Jesus youtube, was it really necessary? I know I won't check the date on those sycra videos when they get recommended.
You're way too hard on yourself. This painting is sweet. I'd give to do what you do. Keep it up.
or set your current layer style to Multiply.
@ 07:28 u can jus keep goin over things wit darks and lights, till u get the mix u think is right. cool lyrix
I was enjoying your devart critiques although I thought you might be a little too negative on things. Now, that you're showing some more stuff of your own style you changed my mind. Nice commentary too. I'm trying to do videos like this, so I do know how much work is involved to make these. Cheers and keep going.
I wish I could get that brush texture in photoshop lol
omg, i didn't think you were a guy. great tutorial, even though i'm a traditional artist. it's good things to know.
how did u learn all you art knowledge? did u teach yourself? or did u go to some art school?
thanks sharing your video.....
Hey Sin what's the setup of this brushes used for paint the faces like a comic style, show us the setup, BTW I notice you had been a little lxxzy with your upload, gimme more in 30 secs is gone 29 XD, thxs
Which program do you use? I did this is in Photoshop CS 5.5 but I didn't get the right pencils that you used there. I really want them 'cause the way you paint looks neat instead with the pencils I used :c.
i think for painter is the same as Photoshop try pressing Alt it should work .
You are great1
Jowls.
interesting that you start with the shadow tone. Shouldn't one usually start with the midtones and then add the shadows (and then highlights)?
There's a 1000 ways to paint a face, don't get stock on only one...
how do you change the color so fast without clicking on the right color adjustments?:)PLS answer
Guy looks like he can beat me up :D
Could you share the brush setting for the pen? Everytime I try to use it follow along I get just mashes of high opacity color no matter how I try to change it with pressure.
All these comments are from years ago, anyone here from 2020’s
I find it weirdly cute how nervous he sounded
what brush are you using? No one ever says what brush they use. I cant get any of the brushes to blend color @ all. I can draw just fine but I cant find a brush that really blends color so I can get any kind of gradation at all and its driving me mad!
i really like his style, I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to color do you think you can view some of my work and maybe give me some pointers?
@Caqui I hope I can put some help here.
if you want to get body proportions and such just first start out with a rhythm line and also do blocking. Also study various body forms and types. try 30 second anatomy studies. Also try some contour drawings as these will help you greatly
look up idrawgirls on the youtube search engine.
did you do this all in one layer??...
What kind of brush are you using here? sorry if you said in the video i probably just missed it.
