In the world of fatwa shopping, anything can be halal. I never heard from any world renowned Islamic fatwa organisations such as Al Azhar, Darul Ifta Misiriyya, etc, that bitcoin is halal. BC is very vulnerable, doesn't have intrinsic value, intangible and earns interest. It's definitely haraam. People of taqwa won't deal with it unless there's solid consensus that it is halal.
I believe its not so good because it is just making up more money in the world and using tons of energy to do so when we are in a time of serious climate change and action being needed to take with the earths environment. Just read any IPCC report. I like its benefits but encryption and privatization and security information can be done much less costly and there are laws that protect our personal information already all in place. There are lots of stories about bitcoin sm hammers because it is untraceable or supposedly untraceable, but I have heard of the U.S. government actually being able to trace, in a certain case anyway...
I think the main issue is that nothing is set in stone about the tangibility and future of cryptocurrency. That makes any investment technically a gamble. Yet I still feel an itch to invest. I pray that it does not harm my soul if I do decide to do so

The real question is not "is it Halal or Haram?", but it should be instead "can it be Halal?". This answer can only be answered by healthy discussions between knowledgeable people who are specialized on these fields of economy, currency, and Fatwa, and the answer should be applicable in our life (example: a Halal Blockchain certified by Islamic scholars and currency experts). We shouldn't just shut it off completely.
Ask yourself whether Bitcoin meets the definition of money in Islam since Bitcoin is being labelled a currency. Will also give you the answer as to what it takes to make it Halal.

I must say the upbringing between money and crypto have significant differences, assuming we know how money was created in the first place, you'll identify through the early stages of crypto that it was used in the black market and also used for money laundering. Now since we see it as an "investment" because we subconsciously nullify the root cause of cryptos value, we assume that it is halal because it is now used as a method of payment from companies. Although I do see blockchain (fintech) as a finite halal way of creating crypto, I also see that the case of it being halal is contradictory from its root upbringing value. There is absolutely no advantage to having a broker in the crypto space. Unlike stocks, there's no such thing as insider information here, and their guess is as good as ours. Cryptocurrency has no intrinsic value, so even the brokers don't know when bitcoin is overvalued or undervalued at the moment. experience really isn't required here

Initially bitcoin itself was haram as it holds no tangible assets but now people and have started allocating valuable commodity to it in order to stabilise its volatility. So these tangible or invested regions ARE THEY HARAM OR HALAL? I don't know.. eg; if the defence and army was using it as payments for good then it would be haram.. if it was being used to invest in pork then I guess that would be haram.. but it it was being used as buying and selling for a profit the halal way eg; investing in properties then I guess that would be ok... unfortunately at the moment the value of the coin is still based on supply and demand. Even as a hedge, the looming questions are how is the valuation of cryptos determined ? How are they regulated or guaranteed? Are they a currency or commodity? I doubt that any mufti permitting trading or investing in cryptos has answers to these questions based on a solid financial understanding of blockchains. It is likely much safer to invest in stocks of established companies that are currently undervalued and be patient rather than speculate in these very high risk ventures.
I want to point out something about bitcoin... you might perceive it be halal, but it’s literally the only way criminals transact money and conduct their operations on. I don't consider renting passive income unless you have professional property management. Most people who rent don't count their time and effort needed just to make a tiny return on their massive investment. For example, you invest $599,000 to buy a second home and rent it out for $3000 a month. Let assume you are cash flow positive on the property and you make $1000 a month or $12,000 a year. What would your annualized return be? 2 percent on the entire amount. Now, you can argue that your return is much higher since you only put down $120,000 on the property. However, you are on the hook for the full $600k regardless of what the future FMV of the house is. Furthermore, people assume that their home will always appreciate in value however, this is a false assumption you can make. In the best case, you will gain some capital appreciation thanks to the central bank increasing the money supply, however, if inflation heats up, you can see your property actually start to lose money in real terms. This is because there is an inverse relationship between housing and nominal interest rates. The central bank will attempt to slow down inflation with higher interest rates and curb lending. It's a currency, it increases and decreases depending on the supply and demand. Not like you buy and it will be doubled or lost all. Its just like exchanging local money to dollar/euro.

I agree and believe the stock market is basically a giant ponzi scheme however there is a big difference here. When you buy the stocks of a company, you are essentially giving them your money to help them do business and grow. The company provides value, creates products, gives services, etc. It's unfortunate the amount of riba and haram in the stock market today but in essence if all the Islamic conditions are fulfilled, it is halal according to many scholars.

If you buy stock from them, you own a little part of the company which also makes you part of that interest/debt. My best advice I can give to you brother is to stay out of the stock market just to be sure. I was responding to the speaker when he said gold along with krypto is not necessarily adding intrinsic value to the world. I think gold should be categorised together with property and clothes as they are commodity while crypto is different and should categorised together with other currencies if they deserve to even be categorised as a currency. In the world of fatwa shopping, anything can be halal. I never heard from any world renowned Islamic fatwa organisations such as Al Azhar, Darul Ifta Misiriyya, etc, that bitcoin is halal. The real question is not "is it Halal or Haram?", but it should be instead "can it be Halal?". This answer can only be answered by healthy discussions between knowledgeable people who are specialized on these fields of economy, currency, and Fatwa, and the answer should be applicable in our life (example: a Halal Blockchain certified by Islamic scholars and currency experts). We shouldn't just shut it off completely.
Ask yourself whether Bitcoin meets the definition of money in Islam since Bitcoin is being labelled a currency. Will also give you the answer as to what it takes to make it Halal.

Former HFT in derivatives at Citi here. I must say the upbringing between money and crypto have significant differences, assuming we know how money was created in the first place, you'll identify through the early stages of crypto that it was used in the black market and also used for money laundering. Now since we see it as an "investment" because we subconsciously nullify the root cause of cryptos value, we assume that it is halal because it is now used as a method of payment from companies. Although I do see blockchain (fintech) as a finite halal way of creating crypto, I also see that the case of it being halal is contradictory from its root upbringing value. This comment is not perfect, but it is to be used as a note of consideration. Asalaam walaykum.

Unlike stocks, there's no such thing as insider information here, and their guess is as good as ours. Cryptocurrency has no intrinsic value, so even the brokers don't know when bitcoin is overvalued or undervalued at the moment.

Eg; elon must sells 10 shares for 100£ now there are 10 shares out there worth 1000.. with no project or purpose it will remain 1000£ which he will own to the shareholders.... so what do you do?.. elon musk then sends out a tweet saying the share price is overpriced causing it to drop on selling demand and he buys back at 500£. If your happy with riding pumps then dump before the whale does and if your looking for a honest stable coin then look for one that will guarantee a incline and which beats inflation because then the coin is working for you.

Initially bitcoin itself was haram as it holds no tangible assets but now people and have started allocating valuable commodity to it in order to stabilise its volatility. So these tangible or invested regions ARE THEY HARAM OR HALAL? I don't know.. eg; if the defence and army was using it as payments for good then it would be haram.. if it was being used to invest in pork then I guess that would be haram.. but it it was being used as buying and selling for a profit the halal way eg; investing in properties then I guess that would be ok... unfortunately at the moment the value of the coin is still based on supply and demand. This supply and demand would be price= supply volume availability/ demand volume. This gives the volume value. The issue is that this is influenced by rich people.. and their intentions are haram.. eg; they buy cheap.. then they send out a tweet, this causes others to buy... this sends the price up then the rich sell.. and what they do is take the value which the poor have put into the volume.. this leaves the poor with volume that is not worth the same value.. This plan is haram because its intentions are to rob the value of the volume.

Even as a hedge, the looming questions are how is the valuation of cryptos determined ? How are they regulated or guaranteed? Are they a currency or commodity? I doubt that any mufti permitting trading or investing in cryptos has answers to these questions based on a solid financial understanding of blockchains. It is likely much safer to invest in stocks of established companies that are currently undervalued and be patient rather than speculate in these very high risk ventures.
I want to point out something about bitcoin... you might perceive it be halal, but it’s literally the only way criminals transact money and conduct their operations on. It’s a currency that cannot be tracked, so what I mean is, that cryptocurrency is a form of a black market currency that emerged out of nowhere. In 5 years time there will be war between the governments and the corporations because of this digital currency. The process of immoral and unidentified money flow shall be considered controversial. I don't consider renting passive income unless you have professional property management. Most people who rent don't count their time and effort needed just to make a tiny return on their massive investment. For example, you invest $599,000 to buy a second home and rent it out for $3000 a month. Let assume you are cash flow positive on the property and you make $1000 a month or $12,000 a year. What would your annualized return be? 2 percent on the entire amount. Now, you can argue that your return is much higher since you only put down $120,000 on the property. However, you are on the hook for the full $600k regardless of what the future FMV of the house is. Furthermore, people assume that their home will always appreciate in value however, this is a false assumption you can make. In the best case, you will gain some capital appreciation thanks to the central bank increasing the money supply, however, if inflation heats up, you can see your property actually start to lose money in real terms. This is because there is an inverse relationship between housing and nominal interest rates. The central bank will attempt to slow down inflation with higher interest rates and curb lending. I agree and believe the stock market is basically a giant ponzi scheme however there is a big difference here. When you buy the stocks of a company, you are essentially giving them your money to help them do business and grow. The company provides value, creates products, gives services, etc.

I was responding to the speaker when he said gold along with krypto is not necessarily adding intrinsic value to the world. I think gold should be categorised together with property and clothes as they are commodity while crypto is different and should categorised together with other currencies if they deserve to even be categorised as a currency. My brother I appreciate your reply but please do not make comments with regards to my knowledge as that it is not part of the discussion.
