My family used to prepare many birdhouse gourds. After drilling the entry hole, stick a few pieces of gravel inside and shake to break up the dried guts. They will shake out easily.
My gourds have been hanging outside, year round in Canadian weather, and they have lasted, literally for years. They have birds living in them every summer..
Growing gourds is so much fun, never two the same. Making something from them is even more fun. Yes, wasps love them, just don't give them room to make a big home, but it will call them into your garden. After they fill up the gourd, they can move a short distance away into your garden.

Being from Florida, as am I, you would know all about the summertime shuffle too! At the beach when sting rays are about you shuffle your feet along the shallows to scare off the rays and avoid being stung🫶

An old bottle brush or a hooked wire like a coat hanger or a wire wheel on a drill. I bought some seeds from MIgardener (33 actually) because of some of the stuff you grew, so cool. I suppose if someone were to place them outside, they could also put a waterproofing coat on them, but really they should last several years just like they are. My grandparents had painted birdhouse gourds hung up on what looked like an old television antenna mounted to a flag pole as "condos" for a colony of Martins that visited their pond every year. I cannot remember a time when they took them down or replaced them, but I'm certain they must've broken down at some point - LOL. And for the record, I think your Sheepishly Me Advent Scene looks absolutely adorable!

The gourds look great, Heather and Levi! I could tell immediately that Levi had spray painted a few things in his life, hahaha - the short/light sprays with multiple coats may sound counterintuitive but really do help with drips as well as drying. Satin will be lovely, as not too shiny and keeps some of the normal gourd patina/sheen. Random Florida kid here hahaha, yes those definitely remind me of stingray egg cases! I love how you always have explained seed thinning, because I totally could see myself as wanting/trying to save them all hahaha. Sometimes less is definitely more. Love how your SheepishlyMe Advent calendar felting turned out, it's adorable and will be super cute with a tabletop tree. I adored this vlogmas season's videos, sad it's over - it went so quick! I am super excited for the year in review, I have watched the others at least a couple times over the years (the ones available) and they always bring me joy and fond memories and the occasional tears too. the celery seeds need the dome until they germinate in my experience. I used sandwich bags to lay over them to keep humidity on only them. You may need to restart the celery seeds as they dry ultra fast on the surface, at least I had to restart when I did the same you did today with mixed other plants that already sprouted.
@@SageandStoneHomestead I am sure it was much higher humidity as it is a giant dome filled with raised beds of moist soil. The trays are inside your home where you have heating , house heating dries the air in a big way. Mine is much more extreme and I put about 5 gallons of water in my humidifier daily to just keep it 35%-40% humidity. I am sure yours is not near the same but still much dryer then needed for seeds to germinate. Hope I am wrong but thought heads up to may need reseeding was good as you have 2 spare trays and extra seed at the ready.
Yay! Looking good- bird houses. Funny story…. We grew them two years ago. They were under our barn rafter and some stacked on rabbits cage but it was A LOT! Anyway my son that was eight (and on the spectrum) got them all out and busted them all over the yard!! I was livid!!! In the spring they were sprouting EVERYWHERE! Needless to say, we didn’t get birdhouses! We moved and for whatever reason I didn’t save seeds but we may get seeds and try again in 2025??😅

I don't know if you've ever thought of it, but you could raise the trays to get them closer to the lights. I've used old books in the past to do that.
