  • Overwintering Canna Lilies is one of my least favorite garden chores. This year was even tougher with them clumping together.

    Do you have to dig up your Cannas where you live?

    • @DGardn100
      @DGardn100 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. I'm on the Texas coast. We can dig up, divide, and replant cannas in the ground in fall.

      No, I’ve never heard of it. I’m in Oklahoma. Very interesting, I might learn something.

      I used to be in Zone 8a but we're now 8b on the updated hardiness zone map. So, I can keep my Cannas and Irises in the ground during the winter, thank goodness! haha! But I did have to divide them and transplant a lot of them into other parts of the yard this year. They get overcrowded so fast! They're like bunnies when it comes to making babies! I now have a few paper bags with lots of Canna and Iris rhizomes that I just don't have any room for. I also like to give them away. I have a plant lady neighbor and we trade bulbs, rhizomes and other plants a lot...it's fun! She gave me a Crinum Lily that I have to keep away from animals because it's so toxic to dogs and cats. It's beautiful though! I call it my Murder Lily because even the pollen is very toxic. That's why I prefer Cannas. They won't poison dogs or cats. I'm sorry- I'm a babbler...haha! Your channel just popped up into my feed and I really enjoyed this video. New subscriber here :)

    Hi
    Iam from uk, just doing what your doing.
    Was trying to be really careful digging them up without damaging them, came to the conclusion impossible 😂, used a spade to break up main clump, then my hands.
    Thought about planting them up in pots till I saw that your just drying them, might copy you and hope they survive.
    Mine have grown like yours, from I bulb I've got loads, must be all the manure and plenty of water.
    Happy gardening !

      Hi there! It’s so hard to not damage them when digging them up 🤣. Ooo I bet they are so happy with the manure!
      Happy Gardening!

    Have you tried growing elephant ears and canna in those cloth/canvas grow bags? I tried it this year, and my bulbs did better than ever before. I live in Maryland and I'm thinking I may leave them in the bags over the winter, but cover them with straw. What is your advice? Am I risking losing them?

    • @TheThriftedPlanter
      @TheThriftedPlanter  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't done that before but I bet they'd grow really well as long as you keep them well watered. I'm not sure of your garden zone but if you experience hard freezes I'm not sure it will survive

    I’m not sure if your aware of this or not but bushel baskets aren’t really made to plant it. There more for dry storage. 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃

    Great job at dividing/ cleaning and storing your cannas! They are super healthy... I am dreading the entire process of digging/ dividing and storing but it has to be done.

    WOWZAS!!! Those clumps are some serious business! I am getting ready to do some major cleaning today, just enjoying my coffee and catching up with my gardener friends on YT, I "might" try to save some cannas from today... When you check on them during the winter months, Do you spray them with a bit of water if needed?

    • @TheThriftedPlanter
      @TheThriftedPlanter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Roxana! Yes they are biggest and toughest cannas I've ever had haha! So I don't like to add in moisture during the winter. I've found that cannas aren't as sensitive as dahlia tubers over winter. If you find that yours are shriveling over winter it might be a good idea to add some moisture but I usually don't add anything

    Why did you plant the cannas in pots instead of in the ground?

    • @TheThriftedPlanter
      @TheThriftedPlanter  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello, I thought they would be really pretty in pots and at the time I didn't want to make room for them in ground.

    How long do u let the canna rhizines dry out for. 24 hours or 48 hours

    • @TheThriftedPlanter
      @TheThriftedPlanter  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I like for mine to dry out for at least three days or longer. I want to make sure they are dry enough that they won't rot over winter.

    Oh my goodness, I have never seen canna lilies that large. Did you buy a different variety or is it the fertilizer?

    • @TheThriftedPlanter
      @TheThriftedPlanter  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They are Canna Muscifolia and are supposed to be big. I do fertilize them really good too
