  • Definitely one of the scariest moments of my life. Colombia is an amazing country, but it does come with many more risks than the average tourist destination. I made this video to be fully transparent of the dangers that possibly come with going here and my personal experience. Overall I've had a great time so far in the country, but this was a terrible experience to go through. Santa Marta is a popular destination for tourists, but just like any of the major cities in the country, there are certain precautions you should take and I hope my story will be helpful for you before considering coming here.

I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

Even as a Colombian, I wouldn't go to lonely, isolated places by myself as I'd be exposing myself to crime. As a blonde, foreign and attractive woman, you stand out more from the crowd, so take precautions and travel in a group or accompanied by a local. Look at this as a positive thing, as a lesson in life that may never happen again as you are now wiser.

Great job explaining things in a straightforward way. I had to explain this concept to my nephew who didn't understand the reason he needed to not wear any jewelry, even though his watch was worth only fifty dollars [which isn't small money, but that's considered inexpensive for a watch]. I explained to him that in many places they don't have access to they type of economic opportunity to make whatever they'd be able to sell his watch or jewelry for. US citizens come from a country deeply rooted in economic opportunity, so we relate to things in a way that we don't place value on things unless they're expensive to us. We also take our safety for granted. Some people do crime out of necessity. They might not have a choice... It's important to respect that fact of life and respect people boundaries. There are areas in the US where the same things could happen...

People go "on vacation" out of the country and for some reason do things they'd think twice about doing in most (if not all) places (esp big cities) in their own countries. Assuming she's from the US, you don't go randomly walking down streets/roads in directions you don't know. A couple blocks in the wrong direction from the city centers in NY, CHI, STL, LA, etc. etc. and you are in places you are not safe. You may end up "fine", but your odds of being a victim are increased incredibly. Been to Colombia many many times...even the beach she's describing...and it's exactly the same there BUT now you stand out (just like you said) and you aren't good with the language either. Be careful, know your surroundings, watch the behavior of others for signals, don't "meet up" with random strangers, etc. etc. EVERYWHERE you go in the whole world including your home country. It's just being rational.

I went to Cartagena and Santa Marta for the first time 30 years ago. While most Colombian are super nice friendly and helpful and while Colombia is now much safer, it is still a "wild" country. I felt super safe in Cartagena. It was like a Colombian but the day I quit, the army was everywhere. I adventured myself out of the gringo trail in Cienaga. I ask my at my hotel until what time it was safe. I went out after sunset only to buy some food at the grocery next door. There were grids everywhere. I met people from Bogota who told me they never really feel safe in their own city. Colombia is much safer than it was 20 or 30 years ago, but it is not Europe or South East Asia.

December 31, after midnight I went to bed and discovered your TH-cam channel. As a Colombian I was amazed that an English speaker was showing my country on this great platform. I saw your videos from "Learning Spanish" to the "Rosario Islands" and I couldn't be more proud to see everything that your camera was capturing. I have lived for six years out of Colombia and I know first hand the impressions that foreigners have about traveling to my country. We Colombians are so proud of our land and we are in a constant struggle to show our country in the best possible way. As soon as I saw your Instagram stories about an incident I felt very stressed. I'm devastated with this video. I really feel very sorry for you and I know that this experience will mark you forever and it's a shame that it's so. It's not fair that a large mass of people fight daily for a better country, that we have the opportunity on your amazing channel to show people from other cultures what we have to offer and that suddenly something like this has happened to you. It breaks my soul to hear your fear about this experience, and I would give anything for you to didn't have to go through this. But it's a reality that is still latent unfortunately, and I didn't fully understand it until I came to live in Europe. The tranquility of going down the street without having to be aware of your surroundings for the danger to which you may be exposed is priceless. The tranquility is invaluable and unfortunately we lack a lot of tranquility so that by joining our magnificent tourist offer we can become a true paradise. I hope that one day it will be, and I am very disappointed, it's like if we take several steps back when you tell your story to the world but it doesn't mean that I don't support you. Thank you very much for choosing Colombia. Thank you very much for also showing how beautiful there is in our country. AND Thank you so much for bringing so many beautiful images there to your audience. I hope if you could ever return to Colombia, you will not hesitate and everything will go much better. 10 years ago I travelled through Colombia by myself (I am above average height and strength but an obvious gringo). Fairly often people would warn me not to go to certain places, and ask me if I needed help. Overall Colombian people are amazingly kind and welcoming, but because of poverty, lack of jobs, and drugs, some people turn to violence and crime. I would advise you to travel with a local guide. I remember once finding a woman walking around a very sketchy part of the city, some woody area here in Mexico city, a place where people get robbed and or killed, also many girls have been kidnapped around those places, or abused...
She was a Korean girl, taking a walk at 8 pm in a very dangerous and beautiful area, where I used to go to get high, when I saw her I immediately walked her back to a safer place, she had no idea, after I walked her to a Mall, I told her about the place she was, she freaked out and decided to go back to her Hotel, I think I also scared her, but she got lucky...
Alina, remember to talk to locals, before you walk around a city, specially on beaches, ask about where are places to go and places to be careful, also if you can be alone on those places, it sucks, but it is the best advice I can tell, sorry you were in such a situation, stay safe!

Oh God, that was a close shave! Glad you made it out, but I can understand how stressful this can be. Many years ago I was almost robbed in Germany (of all places!), but once I thought through what happened, I realized that part of the reason it happened was me dropping my guard down, so I took at as a lesson to never allow yourself to become complacent as things can turn around to the worst in a blink of an eye, and always have a plan "B" in case things turn south. And always trust your instincts - if something feels off - just get yourself out of whatever situation you're in. I hope that over time you will look at in in a similar way, as the saying goes - "everything that doesn't kill us makes us stronger". Wish you well, and good luck with your future endeavours!

As a Colombian my suggestion would be to ask before doing something or going somewhere which is not a usual tourist destination. Ask who? Someone in the front desk of the hotel, for example, or a policeman. Colombians generally know where there may be trouble. This is especially true in or near cities. Many rural areas are safe and you wouldn't have to ask, but in cities it's different.

In one hand, I'm sad that this have happened to you Alina. On the other hand, I admire your courage to continue with your trip but please be careful. I can share a personal history with you:
I'm a Venezuelan man, and when I was younger (as a middle/low-class guy living in Caracas), I walked with my girlfriends (of that time) until the door of their houses exactly to avoid these situations happening to them... I mean, I wanted to protect them. A couple of times, I was about to be killed in similar situations (as the one described in this video) after leaving them in their places... Now, after some years living in Europe, I came to realize that flirting in Venezuela (Caracas 2004-2014) seemed like flirting in the Medieval Age... Hopefully, I could survive, but sadly I have friends that were in the same socioeconomical situation and they didn't survive (I'm serious about this)... Perhaps Colombia is a less violent country but in any case be careful. Thankfully, God was and is with you. Regards from NL.

Dear Alina, I happened to see your videos about Colombia, and this one disheartened me a lot because I was born in Colombia, but I've been living abroad for more than half of my life. I've traveled a lot all over the world and I can tell you I've had great experiences but also bad ones everywhere. That's the reality of many countries. Few of them are 100% secure. BUT, that does not excuse what happened to you in Santa Marta. The problem is that you never expect that to happen to you because you see goodness in the world (I'm like that too). You want to share the beauty you see with your viewers, so this is a splash of reality that tells you not to let down your guard anywhere in the world. I remember being in the main train station in Rome (Termini) waiting for my train. I just sat with my music and a sandwich to wait, when two policemen came and told me to move from that area of the station because I could be raped!!! Never in a million years, would I think I was in danger. But, be certain that, if you are street smart, plus your mind always seeks to share the beauty and the goodness of the locals, that's what you are going to encounter. And when you find yourself in situations like the one you just went through, you do have protection (twice they send help, a taxi driver, and then the bus right there waiting for you) I hope you never go through that again, anywhere, and I hope that this bad episode will not smear the wonderful experience you had in Colombia. Love your videos!

Well ok a lot to unpack, but first i am really glad you are ok! As a Colombian i am really sorry and ashamed for this which is sadly one risk anyone should really keep in the back of their minds when coming here and almost everywhere in Latin America, nonetheless I wan to thank you for your reaction and your love to the country despite this. Yes, as a rule of thumb the best strategy is to just give the stuff up but your reaction even if it was riskier kept you safe and in one piece so probably you saved your own life right there so dont feel bad for it. However, to anyone who is reading, coming here is safe but you need to always always be aware of your surroundings, this might sound crazy but being aware of your surrounding will actually make you look more of a local than being completely oblivious and might scare the bad people aware. ALWAYS ALWAYS ask locals if the route you will take is safe, ask as many times as you can (you can say, "esta via es segura", or "es seguro andar por aqui"), i always do this even being from here. In this case, this very secluded road was kind of a red flag. If locals are hesitant about the safety of the place or if they are not around, skip it. I am really glad you mentioned how locals helped you, like the taxi driver or the people on the bus: THERE ARE MANY MORE GOOD PEOPLE THAN BAD in our countries, dont forget, while travelling in LATAM being around people will always make it more safe. Also, if you, unlike Alina, have no actual reason to take out your technology/valuables DONT DO IT, this does not mean that just because you pull them out you will get robbed, but please always avoid risks. But in general, just remember this and you will have a good time even with your technology out in your hand.
I am really glad you will continue your trip!!! The places you are going to next, like Tayrona and Minca, are MAGICAL and particularly safe (especially Tayrona, I recommend staying inside the park). And lastly, Santa Marta for me does not stand out at all, like you said it can very much just serve as a hub to go to other nicer places, if you skip it altogether you are not missing much, but if you wont staying closer to the city center is relatively safer and its much closer to the places where you can take the bus to Tayrona or whatnot. Thank you again Alina for coming and staying even after such a scary moment! I hope and I am sure you will have a better experience now that you are more aware of the risks and what you can do to avoid them! God bless and happy new year!!!

Sorry you went through that. One really does need to keep one's guard up in Colombia. I've spent a lot of time there and I love Colombia and, beyond having my pocket picked on a tram in Medellin, I've never had a problem. But I think a lot of that is due to being fluent in Spanish,, staying in safe areas, and avoiding situations involving drugs or excessive alcohol. I had a girlfriend from Cali, Colombia for 5 years and have many Colombian friends. All of them are more safety conscious than I am. They will never have their phone sitting out on a table on a patio in plain view, like we do routinely in Canada. Their purses are always held securely. The windows of their cars are tinted very dark so nobody can see what they have inside and attempt a grab and dash. But I've had amazing times in Colombia and will be back again soon. I hope you continue your journey in Colombia.

If there is one thing I've learned when traveling and life in general. It is uncanny how often your gut is correct, how your primal instincts sense danger and safety. If something feels wrong it most certainly is, if something feels legit it probably is. But this should never deter anyone from travelling. You acted very brave in this situation, glad nothing horrible ultimately came out of it.

Thank you thank you for posting this video!!!
As a colombian myself I love when tourists go and enjoy the beauties of my home country but I also feel that it is important that tourists know that bad things may happen. We all let our guards down a bit when we realize that it is not as dangerous as people think.
When I go to Colombia I usually go to Bogota, Medellin, Bucaramanga and Cartagena (not for the beach though) for good beaches I'd go for the Rosario Islands or any other island off the coast of Cartagena.
Rodadero is overrated by colombians all over the country, Ive never understood why !!!
Most people I know have been robbed there... including my sisters (both live in Colombia).
Even in Bogota and Bucaramanga which I consider safe I had strangers warning me about walking to where I was going and both times they saved me from being robbed or God knows what.
You make very good points when you tell your story and give great advice. Again Thank you for this video!!!

On the flip side of things, I would be remiss if I didn’t observe Colombia produced the greatest love story in Latin America, the novel Maria by Jorge Issacs from Cali. Its considered the best romantic novel in Spanish in the nineteenth century. Its full of pathos and sensitive feeling. A tale of heartbroken love - its been made into many films but I keep thinking of the Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Efrain’s choices result in Maria dying before they can consummate their love. I wonder if the author wasn’t inspired by Michael Drayton’s famous Sonnet 61

I have done solo traveling for the past 7 years and have been more than 70 countries and counting :-). 5 years ago, I started from Brazil without any detail plans and I traveled 5 countries in South America in 3 months. I was very fortunate and did not encounter any trouble during my trips there. I learned my lesson when I first arrived in Rio, Brazil. I carried my expensive camera and walked alone in a neighborhood at the foot hill of Corcovado. And a neighborhood policeman was following me and protecting me along the way and told me never walking alone , even in the middle of the day. And I remember from then on.
Keep traveling but remember there are many wonderful souls out there watch over us and you must be vigilant and use common senses.

I am a foreigner who has been living here in Santa Marta for over 11 years, and hosting AirBnB for about 5 of them.... I have never found myself in a similar situation, and I have only had 2 guests robbed (both on the beach in Taganga)...
You were lucky, and I am very glad that were not hurt! You were also very lucky that the bus was there, and that people tried to help you... Also, if you had asked wherever you were staying about walking that route alone on New Year's Eve, they would have strongly advised against it. (Crime has risen sharply throughout South America as a direct result of increased severe poverty caused directly by the COVID economic fallout...)
You yourself quoted rule number one at the beginning of your video... NEVER BE ALONE IN A REMOTE AREA (especially if the are no easy ways to escape the area you are in)... Also, you are walking around with cell phone/camera out and concentrating on that rather than your surroundings... Not good advice in most areas of the world (even areas of New York).
Be safe in future, and be sure to check what areas are safe with your hostel/hotel/hosts before doing things. Be vigilant, be sensible.
Wishing you the best for the rest of your trip in Santa Marta, Colombia, and South America in general. It's a wonderful city here, and a special and beautiful country.

I always hear these excuses for crime infested countries, but it just doesn't make sense. Poverty has nothing to do with crime. Culture does. China was the poorest country in the 70s, 80s, but crime was still extremely low. While on the other hand South America in the 50's and 60's, had similar (slightly worse) crime statistics as Europe, while now S America is sinonimous with crime. What happened in S America in the 60s, 70s?

(even in the US you have extremely poor areas, but are without much crime) Maybe it has something to do with American culture glorifying gang violence, getting rich quickly, instant gratification and se*ualization? Nah, can't be that, it must be just lack of money. It's so simple to you, right?
