Very good job with this video. Back to the basics. I wish more of the younger generation would learn how to fix things. I came across a 43 year old man who didn't know how to change a tire. Lmao
thinking back you should have told people about grounding the spark plug aginst the motor to check for spark if they dont have a spark checker light. just sayen
or pull off spark plug wire and put spark plug in wire ,(I use old one)and have someone crank car over while you have plug up against metal..(has to be against metal!)
I just tested mine the same way...it was showing fire at the plug and it looked strong...so I tested other things...when there was nothing left to test I checked the timing and it was dead on...turns out it was the module...I've had those go bad before but never acted like this...I put a new module in it and it started up and ran fine....again I've never heard of one doing that so that plug wire tester isn't always accurate.
Show how to test module and pickup coil also. Should have shown lining the rotor up with number 1 terminal before removing distributor (with cap removed) and same thing for re-installing. You very much need to check the phasing on your distributor also considering all that carbon in the cap. Your rotor may be having to jump too far to the terminal, this can weaken and burn up your coil!
Actually the only reason to remove this distributor would be if the pickup was bad , save ppl a whole lot of nonsense by showing them how to test , coil, module and pick up without pulling the distributor..... Especially because a bad pickup is usually the least likely cause . Js
Do not follow the directions in this video. This is not how you remove and install a distributor , and of course there are easier ways to test components of a hei distributor without removing it.
Hello, I have the same issue . I changed the entire distributor, cables, and coil HEI and it wont spark. It did run once more BEFORE i installed the new Accel distributor... Any suggestions ?
Eric Slifkin you don’t have the ignition wire plugged into the distributor. There is wire when key is on will have a 12v power supply this must be plugged into the the distributor.
That wire should receive power from your key ignition switch in the cab. You can look for a wiring diagram of the steering column and you’ll know what wire provides power and sends power to the distributor. There can be a faulted wire or a bad ignition switch.
NashCustoms thanks for the quick reply. I made a damn mess, because i took off an alarm it had. I went out and bought one of those cheap ignitions from auto zone it cranks but no luck yet.
CORRECTION. You spell correction with no f.. glad you were about to correct this in the comments. Wouldn’t want anyone else watching to be confused, considering it’s been this long before it was pointed out, it must just mean your the only dumb enough to think it really needed attention 🤣👍🏻
I like the step by step, question can u hook the distributor on the vehicle like u did removed or it will F*ck things up, the car am asking for its a project car it doesn't have a computer on it no more
I was driving and it cut off with no power I did some checks and it was getting fuel and no spark and the starter wire remote was burned out like something was touching
I would look into ignition power. See if the ignition is receiving power. Make sure to fix that starter wire and then wrap it with heat protective wrap.
I Feel Like An Idiot Asking You This But,,, What Exactly Was The Issue? Because It Looks Like You Just TOOK THE DISTRIBUTOR OUT AND JUST PUT IT BACK IN.
Top dead center on compression stroke. Stick your finger in #1 cyliner and once all the air stops moving past your finger thats top dead center. Point rotor at #1 cylinder #1 wire terminal pointed at number 1. Correct firing order, tightsn the dizzy down so its tight but you can still time it with some effort. Then once your happy tighten the dizzy bolt fown
None of this s*** do you see on TH-cam is it going to help it might even make things worse if you're not a mechanic mentality and even then it's vague these guys just want hits clickbait they get you in a lot of trouble if you don't know nothing you probably ought to go to a mechanic are your next-door neighbor as you could end up screwing your damn machine up a lot worse it's already

I’m 18 and own a 1973 roadrunner, I absolutely love that thing but ofc now I got no spark this morning 😭
Having this issue right now and your video was very helpful. Going to go buy the spark plug tester right now!! Thanks
Exceptional block of instruction. Thank you.
Nice pun.
yessir, preshate it. I was getting no spark. bout to change the wires, plugs, and coil inside the HEI. thanks.
Make sure your getting that 12v to the coil cap before you spend money replacing anything else!
This guy thank you for the info bout to run them test and that core most likely is the problem you keep rocking
YOU FOR GOT ONE VERY INPORTANT THING HOW TO SET YOUR DIST UP FOR # 1 BEFOR YOU REMOVE IT
Wooooowwwwww Itś my problem i have actually in my 1970 Camaro Very helpful video, I check my grounds and voltage, Thank you :D
Appreciate it. Simple to the point. very helpful
Thank You for this! It just helped me to confirm a bad pickup coil and module.
thinking back you should have told people about grounding the spark plug aginst the motor to check for spark if they dont have a spark checker light. just sayen
Gunna try this stuff tmr morning, thx
or pull off spark plug wire and put spark plug in wire ,(I use old one)and have someone crank car over while you have plug up against metal..(has to be against metal!)
You should add a newer video including what happens if you have a good coil and no spark. Ignition module or Magnetic pick-up could be bad.
The video was definitely helpful I need to purchase my spark plug tester now. Thanks!
LeShawn James good luck! Glad I could help.
Thanks mate, great, and very clear vid, cheers from Melbourne Australia
Thanks. I had forgotten how it worked.
good job for a youngster alot of people will defanatly benifet from this video.
Thank you, im not getting spark we,ll test coil next . great job !
Great video dude thanks keep it gangster!
What is spark to ground POLARITY on Chevy HEI ignition coil as of 1978? Positive or negative ground?
your test helped me find my problem ,bad coil.Great job good video .THANKS BILL PENN PHILA PA
I'll go ahead and like I'm pretty sure I need a new coil but shouldnt the rotor still spark with tha cap of and it's on the ingine
you use a fuel regular with a mechanical pump and the eddy? or are you running an electric pump?
I appreciate the info 👍
great explanation thanks
Thank you buddy that helped
Fast ,easy ,learn 👍👍👍
Thank you well explained

Is the module the long circuit looking thing?
@@heltonh3944 it's under distributer cap usually black...has two wires on each side...2 quarter inch screws hold it in.
Under rotor cap in distributor

I'm getting 12V in the "ON" position. I'm getting .5V while cranking
I would follow the wire from 12v power or possibly can be the ignition switch but could be many other underlying issues.
@@NashCustoms thats what we are going to do

Ahh i wondered of anyone had ever actually spent real money on a spark tester.
Turns out they don’t take Monopoly money 🤷🏼♂️
I’m not getting power to the main wire. My fuse box has power. Any suggestions?
That wire should receive power from your key ignition switch in the cab. You can look for a wiring diagram of the steering column and you’ll know what wire provides power and sends power to the distributor. There can be a faulted wire or a bad ignition switch.

You mention to make sure the wire that powers up the hei has 12 volts. What if it doesn’t? Mine seems to be intermittent.
That comes from your ignition so your key has to be on. Without it it won’t supply power so it won’t ignite the spark.
So possible ignition starter switch?
Yes, I have seen that be the issue before on a Pontiac.
Thank you! You’re a good teacher !
I have the same issue no spark I have check everything under the hood wires coil and distributor. Can you help me out
Corrfection, The Cap doesn't "Spin". The ROTOR spins.

Miguel Sanchez you wouldn’t be able to spin the distributor if it’s locked in sync with the cam gear unless you crank the whole engine over.
NashCustoms could the engine start if it sparks ?
Not if you don’t have the spark plug wires connected or even better just take out the fuel pump fuse.
Good job

Calculus X Trigonometry 😂
Same thing I thought
Proper way to test the coil is to check the ohm value of the primary and secondary coils.
Can you tag a video?
@@GreaterGewd yikes he just told you
Thanks 👍😊
Need some help
You skipped over reinstalling the distributor to get it timed correctly.

No one ever looks under the rotor when they remove it.
Please stop calling the rotor a cap. The cap doesn’t spin.
just bout one..lol
