That was a great week of sailing at OSYC. I don’t think we could have asked for better weather for the H14s or Midwinter’s. You sailed the wheels off every boat that you set foot on. Congrats! Doug and Megan.
Looks like you got some decent races with us on the coast! I Hope that was an interesting experience for ya! would assume Greece is sooo much different than here, it's crazy! But nonetheless hope you're first time was a decent exposure to the community, they definitely are enthusiastic for sure! Hope you enjoyed your time and have a safe trip back!
Joe, we were gaining on you guys and I knew you were about ready to throw a tack. I didn’t wanna make you guys go under so we went early trying to not mess with you 2. On the port, I wanted to come up but we were going to intersect. If our conversation would’ve been recorded, you would’ve heard me saying to Sydney, don’t let me interfere with Joe and Laura. Great times!
Cool to see you around my home town. Lived in New Orleans but I spent every summer in Waveland, MS which is about 30-45 minutes west of there. The three summers after hurricane Katrina I went to sailing camp and loved sailing flying Scotsman and 420’s. Live in FL now and I want to get back in to it. So much fun
I had a Hobie 16 in the 80's, did a little racing, never good at it, but this video made me feel like I was in the race with you, thanks for the memories.
Hello Joseph. We are VERY excited and doing all the prep work at the Test n Tune Regatta this year in 2024 preparing to host you as our guest at the Hilton Head Multi Hull Regatta in 2025, to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the 1975 Hobie 16 Nationals . So question is …When another boat is beating us on the downwind I want to ask what are we doing “wrong .” As you and Florida were battling on the first downwind leg, what were they doing “right” and why were you losing ground on the downwind ? Is it just the wind gods or were they doing something “ right “ ? Thanks for great video as always .
That was great Joe, thanks for sharing this regatta! Could be nice to have more information on the beach, before to go racing. How you are preparing your boat.
Hey Joe, me and a friend of mine booked our vacation for wildwind this summer ( we both have quite some sailing experience but not with the boat models you have there) and were wondering how long the process is of allowing us to take the boat out by ourselves. If it's just a quick check of ability/rundown of the boat or a mandatory amount of lessons?
If you have experience you should be able to take out a boat straight away without instruction - starting with the more basic boats and then work your way up through the fleet
Hey Joe, Better late than never with my feedback! I noticed that your pace seemed a bit slower during the first downwind leg (Timestamp 9:35). I noticed the telltales on the backside of your mainsail weren't flying straight backward. However, during your second downwind leg (Timestamp 26:47), your pace seemed faster than the boat behind you. This isn't a criticism, but rather a shared observation. Of course, this isn't about a basic discussion of sail positions on a broad reach but rather about optimizing performance during a race. I'm also trying to figure out the perfect tension in my mainsail to suit the course and wind strength during downwind legs. It's challenging for me to make the right adjustments. Perhaps you could discuss this topic in your livestream or share your experiences in another way. Best Winds, Robert
@@JoyriderTV Yes, the question is how I can improve my performance on a downwind leg. I steer to maintain a 90° angle with the apparent wind, adjusting my course to either bear down and gain speed on a deeper course or head up to pick up speed. The main sheet tension isn't defined at this point, so I rely on my intuition and keep it loose. Should I sheet out until the telltales fly in the correct direction, or how do you manage the sheet tension in these situations?
8:48 Poor Bradley indeed! I misjudged that layline badly and had to turn down, gybe, head back up, and tack again to make that mark.
That's what I thought - grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory.

Yeah for sure. Such a good week. Thanks again for all of your help and bringing the 14. Going back to Greece to sail the wheels off it!!

Thanks very much for not hoovering our wind! It was so great to meet you

Excellent race video. Love your "gambeling" comments on tactics. Great crew!
Laura did a great job. Thanks
~~~ # 11... Herb James ..... from fleet 204, Syracuse, NY ??????
That's him - he's very consistent.
LOL! "The Home of Underachievement in Catamaran Sailing" hehehe, you're a hard case Joe! Best, Rob^^
Maybe I should be more careful what I say when the camera's rolling!!
Question: Why is Laura constantly looking up the mast and what is she looking for? Cheers Joe.
She’s looking at the upper telltales on the jib
Great stuff, been enjoying the racing.
Thanks Jake.
thanx for taking us along... where did You Pick up Your excellent Crew... doing a perfekt Job ... thumps up and good luck on Lucky
YES! Looking forward to it.
I think this could be the lead question in this week's Q+A on Friday.
I'll open with this.
If you want to do the French national in may, you will have a place on my Hobie ⛵️⛵️⛵️😉😎
@@tataneouquoi Thanks for the offer.
I don't think i'll have time but i'll keep it in mind.
Thanks for that Robert.
Yes, I'll give this some thought and talk about it in this week's Q+A.
Cheers
Maybe, could you make your question more specific - is it just downwind that you're referring to?
Great commentary and thanks to Lauren for added a little bit of class to the video.
The much needed bit of class!!
