not really only China ... the German city Wuppertal has been using such a suspended Monorail train route for more than 120 years already, so this is really not a new concept. There is also a small version at Düsseldorf Airport (also in Germany), and maybe a few more in Europe and North America.

This technology is over 70 years old, other versions are over 120 years old. There is a reason it is not the go to solution for urban transit. There are very specific circumstances where this system makes sense. Wuppertal with it's geography and road layout, as one example. The Düsseldorf airport with it's car parks and roads on the one hand and the Shonan monorail with its narrow, densely built up valley on the other. In almost all other cases it is simply cheaper to built conventional rail on ground level with the occasional bridge or tunnel where appropriate.
