As a born and raised Mendo kid I have many found memories of the museum here in Willits and of the stories of my grandfather helping with the layout of livery stables as a county employee under Herb Pruitt and of the time my father put in polishing the floors and keeping up with the other tasks Herb handed out. I remember always asking if we could stop by in passing to see Herb and the museum and learning about new things by our friend Herb and meeting some of the characters of our past such as Mark Walker and hearing the tail of how he retrieved the ships wheel that now stands in the main hall, I look about the museum today in awe of what our county is and was and the truly astonishing facts that make our history stand out from the last land grab and a trail of mismanagement and endangering of this lands natives , the last family feud of the wild west, a racehorse that uplifted the country and gave us our hospital, to the back to land hippies that mixed with the mills, hops, wool, grape, and prune growers of our past. I hope we get the chance to celebrate this milestone and know our history is in good hands for the next 65 years.

Do the archives catalog the history of the first residents of Mendocino county or is this limited to the white people who arrived so much later?

Hi Laurel's Peace. Again, sorry to take so long to get back to you. We have quite a lot of history of the indigenous people of Mendocino County and the surrounding region. We are continuing to develop that history. We are also trying to bring forward an awareness of how that population views their own history.

*Laurel's Peace* - Do you think only Native and White people have a significant history in Mendocino County?
Spain and Mexico have significant history in Mendocino County in between the times of Natives (Pomo) and White people.
Mendocino County's history is more than just the first residents and the current; there are people groups and governments in between those times that were neither Native or White.
Spanish and Mexican history in Mendocino County is quite significant and is prior to White history or government of California. *U.S. or White control of California was gained from Mexico not from Natives.* Much of the Mexican vs Indian war was waged in San Francisco (Presidio), Sonoma and north past Mendocino County. Following those wars and Mexico's independence from the Spanish, Alto California was formed and owned and governed by Mexico.
