A Brief Look at the Historical Society of Mendocino County, CA
80 years later in 2017, my wife and i lived in Ukiah for a year. Our son was born there. It was fun to see how the town once was and sad to think that all the people in this film have lived their lives and are now gone.
Cool snapshot of the historic Redwood Empire
12:25 minute mark is the beginning of the warning the people of Ukiah did not heed. "Ladies and Gentleman, support wholeheartedly your local merchant". And what was warned of 88 years ago, in this 1937 reel is now Ukiah's unfortunate current state.
I live here! This channel is amazing! Thankyou!
Very cool! Makes me think of “The Prowler” filmed in Willits around the same time.
Haha love this, thank you - keep the good content coming!
So maby loved pets I hope this family had many meals and lsughs together

Wasn't Hitchcock's the birds filmed in Mendocino?
Nevermind I looked it up it was filmed in Bodega bay
Adding the tears is a 😊touch. Interesting stuff. Thanks!
Good content. Bad voice audio.
I graduated in 1987. But if I could have picked the ideal time to have been in high school it would have been 79-83.
lol the only Asian is basically the computer nerd
This must be tater swifts grandma singing ,her name was potater swift !!! 😂😂😂
Thank you!!
Man that’s a lot of teachers for that time must have been a huge high school
Absolutely fascinating! The term "blind pigging" was completely unknown to me prior to watching this, though I must admit after learning its meaning, it does sound perfectly authentic to the unique vernacular that has always seemed to circulate through the area. The peculiar mix of nationalities that contributed to our population in the early years and the unbridled contempt that they all seemed to share for one another has proved exquisite inspiration for the local dialect, to be sure. On several occasions in my travels beyond our fair land, when compelled to deliver a dressing down to some new friend or acquaintance, they have reflected that its delivery was so tailored and creative that they could scarcely be cross with me afterwards. 😆 I just say it's "all in a day's work" for a true son of Mendocino County.
I went to Ukiah High School, graduated in the early 1970's. We had a very unique English Teacher, Mr. Norm Williamson. He was kind of a hippy. One of his classes was called "Literature in Modern Music". We would listen to Rock and Roll songs of the 1960's and 1970's. Then we would write essays of our own interpretation of the song and lyrics. He also brought up a topic that we studied for a couple of weeks. It was about the different English dialects within Mendocino County. Each area had their own unique way of speaking.
Haha cool these images from 1981 from High School
I miss Americans
My childhood friend, who was also my neighbor, had a grandfather who was born in Hawaii in 1911. (She answered hee 2 brothers and parents lived with her grandparents on her father's side). When I was at her house, I stumbled upon the grandfather's senior year yearbook from 1929. The grandmother saw me looking through it, and showed me her high yearbook from the early 1930s she was born in 1916 in Hawaii). Mind you, I was a kid back then, and I actually found it interesting (most kids don't find this kind of stuff interesting). My dad caught me looking through the old yearbooks and told me to be extra careful when looking through them because they were very old and nearly falling apart.
What about Star Wars? I believe it was the Ewok one
That was filmed further north in the redwoods of Del Norte County.
The Guys did not have many options here
Great video! Cool to learn about the “dry” towns. I have old-timey Mendocino criminals in my family tree (the Frosts, oh my). I think they pre-date mugshots, though.
The Frost - Coates Feud in the Willits area and Little Lake Valley could have rivaled the famous Hatfields and McCoys Feud. The Frost-Coates Feud lasted for over 30 years, from 1867 to the early 1900's. If you are interested there is a book titled "Badges and Buckshot" written in 1993. There is a chapter about the Frost - Coates Feud. There are some mugsots in there. There was a lot of hatred between the two families. Stemming from the Civil War. One family supported the north and the other family supported the south. I do have to say that when Art Frost was killed by his long time live in girlfriend, in 1988. The community of Laytonville did not mourn him. Art was a tough, strong man who grew up working in the woods and worked in logging. He also had a very short temper. I saw first hand the results of his beating her, more than a few times. One night, her nose was detached from her face and it was folded over. This was the era before "domestic violence" was not yet a hot political issue. Specific laws about domestic violence were enacted in the mid-1990's. In 1988 Art Frost arrived home and his girlfriend shot him in the chest with a handgun, I think it was a .357 magnum. She was sentenced to 360 days in the county jail and 5 years probabtion.
@ Whoa. I was only familiar with the older Frosts and their crimes. Sounds like Art had it coming; the abuse his girlfriend suffered is awful. Thank you for recommending Badges and Buckshot.
@ Art did a lot of other anti-social stuff. When he was younger, maybe 16 or 17 years old, he was living on Steele Lane, Laytonville. He was shooting at a Deputy and CHP Officer. He got arrested with nobody hurt.
i grew up there so cool thank u
Looked like fun😊
God bless her soul....
Pomo people!
Long time PV resident (1996-Present) and just discovered this channel. I love it! Thanks for documenting all the cool interesting stuff from our little County :)

The Howling???? 1981 werewolf movie by Joe Dante. Lots of scenes in Russian Gulch Beach and Russian Gulch campgrounds 2. Peace my friend
They were White people then.
IMHO, the best movie here was "Summer of '42".
This is wonderful. Thank you!
That is my great great grandmother
That’s cool, I actually go there
Humanoids from the deep!
Rob Bottins 1st hob with Rick Baker..
Isn’t that the band KISS
Nobody remembers "Same Time Next Year?" It was a bigger movie than any of these. It's a shame that a so-called "historical society" doesn't give credit to that movie.
No kidding. A disappointing omission. Filmed at Heritage House with beautiful coastal scenery. Better than all the others!
I agree.
Don't forget the HP Lovecraft film The Dunwich Horror where Mendocino stood in for Massachusetts.
I know who’s not pretty, anyone who thinks removing history from a collection is okay. Figures it would occur in Sacramento.
I think miss 608 looks adorable 😂😊
You should do more point arena shools year books.
I love that he has a mask on in the 80s and had no idea that it was going to be a regular thing during Covid. Maybe he was predicting the future lol but still a great photo. I love the 80s stuff.
Humanoids beyond the deep 1979. We were paid to stay all night during the filming of the carnival scenes I also lived in the trailer park next to the yacht Goldy and Kurt filmed in
These kids look old
More testosterone. Statistically double what we have today
