  • There is a persistent issue with with the compass/gyroscope in all of CM12.1 nightly builds and CM based ROMs in general and the unwanted flipping of the orientation axis when the phone is faced up. This video aims to showcase the issue in CM12.1. (Still broken in 20151725 nightly however)
However the problem disappears when using CM12S, and possibly OxygenOS.

080615 UPDATE: SultanXDA has pushed a fix for the compass bug. See his commit here:
    github.com/sultanxda/propriet...
Here are his CAF ROMs that ran well with Sultan's Fix in my testing:
    - Unofficial CM12.1 by SultanXDA:

    - Euphoria OS + CAF kernel by Crazy boy:

OmniROM based ROMs are also completely fine. You could try these ROMs for your OPO that ran flawless in my testing:
    - Official OmniROM Nightlies by samstone86:

    - AxxionPop by siracuervo (if you want a fair bit of customisability):

For all intents and purposes I use Star Chart as an example, an app that makes use of the accelerometer, magnetometer and gyroscope that orientates and points the direction of galaxies and stars in the universe. You can also use Google Sky Map or any other simple compass apps which also shows similar symptoms of the issue as long as the phone is raised upwards.

I have the same issue- Sky Maps, Star Chart, SkEye-
    the behavior persists throughout.
I installed Phone Tester from the Play Store, and the Gyroscope section shows the x, y, and z axes hovering around 0 degrees, regardless of the phone's position.
Have you reverted to an earlier version of CM to see if the issue goes away?

CODE BLUE I don't have this issue in CM12. I've read that the bug was already in existence since the inception of CM12.1... Till today I have absolutely no idea what is the cause of it.

i have the same issue and i have found out its an accelerometer issue rather a gyro problem. use sensor kineticks to make sure

it seems to be gyro problem. shows in sky , street view etc. accelerometer looks OK on SensorBox. Any solution?

In my case the accelerometer works while checking on sensor kinetic. I don't understand the testing for gyro. Have to study.

I have the same issue and it is very annoing because i use star chart all the time for astronomy and now i am on a dilema. Have cm12 or revert back to stock.?

Andreas Christodoulou Hi Andreas, yes I have reverted back to stock CM12s for the time being until an official fix is out. You can also try OmniROM (5.1.1) which doesn't exhibit this problem but customisability is scarce/near stock Android, however.

Thanks for omnirom but i prefer euphoria ROM or BrokenOs...so waiting...

If you have a rooted phone you can try what is in the description of the video. I tried to modify this file as noted in the github link from description and it seems like the bug disappeared. I wanna try at night and see if the stars will match what I see on the screen cause it is hard to test it this way.

Same issue for me... All lollipop 5.1.1 rom are impacted :(

David B Actually, the only one that surprisingly isn't affected is OmniROM. Give it a try, it works. But not a fan of the ROM because it's kinda near stock, would love a bit of customisability. I'm not a fan of Xposed too though. Prefer all the features baked into the ROM's framework without having to mod anything.
