I remember seeing this back in '73 on television. I loved it then, and still do today. In my opinion, this is the best ever adaptation of the classic tale.
This is the best one Jack Palace did a superb performance! Dan Curtis and Robert Colbert excellent! Bille White law all excellent! First saw it when aired! I've got to get dvd! Bravo Rip to all of those mentioned!❤
@@AggroQM2 Yes. And the crossword-playing hotel owner in Hot Fuzz. I was surprised how beautiful she was. The earliest I saw her was in Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy a few years later.
I was hoping this movie would be a faithful version of the novel but even though it wasn't, it was extremely enjoyable. I first found out about this when I read Dick Smith created the Mr. Hyde makeup. Not only was it a great makeup design but the makeup looked great in closeups. The only downsides for me was the shot-on-video look and the score. To be fair, the tale is so well known, I don't know if the mystery aspect of the original novel would work so perhaps there's good reason a faithful movie has yet to be made. Thank you for uploading this movie. I watched it streaming today and it's nice to know it's also available for me here.
This version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I remember vividly from long ago. The performance of Jack Palance is riveting. They did no need for special effect only Jack Palance's facial expression changed from mild and humble to psychotic amazing.
Good. And the ending is well done! Some breaks in the audio, including an inauspicious one at the climax, but hey, it's a broken sort of world isn't it Mr./Mrs. Jeckyll/Hyde? 😅
Why does the volume keep cutting out on some scene? Copywrite issue, other than that fantastic adaptation. I 1st heard of this film through a preview on one of Elvira's Thriller Video back in the mid 80's.
This is not from 1986 but 1968! For 1968 this is pretty decent Video quality! Produced and Directed by Dan Curtis who was doing DARK SHADOWS at the time and if you'll observe: the music you hear is from Dark Shadows.
Very close, but actually, the music from Jekyll/Hyde was reused on Dark Shadows. For example, the "Darkness in Collinwood" music that overlays the J/H opening title sequence debuted here in this 1968 TV movie and was introduced soon thereafter on Dark Shadows, specifically with the 1968 episode where Barnabas attempts to rid himself of Cassandra/Angelique by taking a knife to her portrait in the drawing room of Collinwood. The sting music used at the end of the J/H title sequence was also used in its end credits finale. It was later reused in the Curtis versions of Frankenstein and Dorian Gray to also close those movies and as the closing sting of House of Dark Shadows and the final moment of the last episode of Dark Shadows. The repetitious use of the score in Dark Shadows and other Curtis Horror projects suggests that it originated in DS, whereas the opposite is true; it was introduced here and later reused by DS and the classic horror adaptation TV movies.
Love watching historical British movies because they actually had brains, morals, etiquettes, mannerisms and culture Things which are estranged in modern society
I have always liked this movie but in the scene where Hyde kills Gwen, his mouth is open in a closeup making it seem as if her screams are coming from his mouth.

BRIEF COMMENT: THIS IS AN EXCELLENT TV FILM ON THE JEKYLL-HYDE TALE WHICH IS WELL KNOWN IN THE MACABRE LITERATURE. IT WAS MADE IN 1968 IN ENGLAND & PRODUCED/DIRECTED BY THE LATE DAN CURTIS & THE LATE JACK PALANCE IN THE STARRING ROLE. IT'S BEEN ON DVD FORMAT FOR MANY YEARS. (RIP) DAN CURTIS & THE LATE JACK PALANCE. BOTH MEN ALSO APPEARED IN THE DRACULA TV FILM MADE IN THE SAME YEAR.
I saw this when I was a kid and it's still one of my favorite movies.
Jack Palance is still my favourite Jekyll & Hyde.
@@mikebasil4832 Hard to think of a better one.
Same here 😊
Dan Curtis & Jack Palance also did a TV movie of Dracula, which is currently on Tubi TV!
@@anglomikJack Parlance was fantastic. He naturally looked like Skeleton Face.

Jack Palance is my favorite Jekyll/Hyde -- his is the most menacing performance.
This is Brilliant, long with the Frederick march one this is my favourite both ahead of their time
And, who can forget Baghdad Cafe?
This was a "very good show".
I'm a fan of 60's and 70's tv horror, of which Dan Curtis gave us a lot.
Thanks so much for posting!

what a brilliant movie! pity about the disappearing sound
This film is from 1968 not 1986!
Exactly . I have already seen this classic and thought by reading the description by the thumbnail, that this was an eighties version.🤦🤦🤦🤦lol
Yes, I thought it odd that it was Billie Whitelaw’s first role. She was working way before 1986 (The Omen, Beckett plays).

Composed by Robert Cobert.

More English teleplay than movie ... but that's what makes it so damned English good. Palance at his remarkable best.

Mr Hyde is fun. I’d hang out with him. How did he manage his own place and friends so quickly?
wow, that waltz they played a few times was from the old Dark Shadows tv series 67-71. Only problem is that the audio keeps cutting out.
This TV movie originally aired in 1968, not 86! Produced by Dan (Dark Shadows, Winds of War, Burnt Offerings) Curtis.
This is the best version of this story!
I've always felt that way too!
I believe we're due for another version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Hollywood, please stay out of it.
This film was made in 1968, NOT 1986.

And re-aired in 1974 or '75, which was when I first saw it.

The movie business always makes changes from the book. Shouldn't but does.
