I think that's mostly because it's MIDI though. If someone played it by hand, or used a more advanced composing program, I don't think it would sound like video game music.
Logan Finn - Student : Actual video games weren't invented until the 1970's unless you count what I wouldn't even call a video game that was made in 1952
Cuz inverting something at C is so much harder than inverting at at the E lol.. Take the upper note, check distance to E (good interval reading practice actually) and just write it down :D Not that hard. Just do it one part at a time, then practice it, then next.
Holy triple hells, this is just amazing! I need this for Toccata and Fugue in D! If this masterpiece can sound like a dream sequence, then imagine what Toccata and Fugue would sound like!
Now, I am not an expert in music, so take my experiences with a grain of salt: I think it is as beautiful as the original, but less...emotional. This is because the piece keeps returning to the same high notes, like the original does with low notes. The latter sounds reassuring, like a return to home, although that might be a depressing one. While the original sounds somber, then happy, then somber, then happy, this one begins sounding happy, then with each passing repetition it seems more and more robotic, and then comes the psycho moment in the middle abd everything starts to sound psychotic and then the abrupt end....it is although Beethoven composed this for Elise, not to play, but to replace a broken music box ballerina or something
Hip Hop & Rap Beats - BreathtakingBeats.com Thats because when you invert major intervals they become minor, and vise versa. Same for diminshed and augmented, but perfect intervals remain perfect: perfect 4th becomes perfect 5th, and vise versa.
@Zachary Baker: That is not correct: the intervals remain the same, and they are NOT subtracted from an octave, as you suggested. Only their order changes.
Sounds like role playing video game music for when you meet the whimsically enigmatic character that eventually joins your party after a series of interesting, but brief, encounters.
While the original to me has the feeling of "contemplation", "recognition", and "awe", the inverted has feelings of "adventure", "exploration", and "discovery". Both feelings involving some sort of travel or motion but with different intentions, all resulting from a simple inversion. Wow... total amazement.
This is amazing, I know it's gonna sound silly of me, but you should really try "mirror" play them, you know?, play the original version and the inverted one at the same time, it would be super interesting to hear how it would sound like! By the way, really nice videos I like them, keep it going!
i love the fact that, comparing the original version to the inverted, the minor chords turn mayor and viceversa. Like, the parts that are supposed to sound dramatic don't give the same feeling at all when inverted. i dont really get why it happens but i love it.
sounds like the music that plays when you're in some peaceful clearing finding out about a core plot element in a 16-bit game, and occasionally changes to boss fight music.
genius! one of those things that have several times come to mind, but which I've never actually undertaken. Like other worthy experiments, it gives new info and insight, so THANKS!
This is everything I could have hoped for! O_O :O This is one of my fave pieces of music but it's now got an added complexity and almost darkness... I love it!!!
I have to say, props to you as a musician for being able to look at this at all. Simply watching it scroll is killing my eyes. I'll stick to playing guitar.
If I understand this correctly, this is interval perfect inversion - a symmetric reflection of the absolute number of steps or half steps away from the leading tone. I wonder what a diatonic inversion would sound like where you stay in the key. That would be interesting I think but I don't have a clue of MIDI software, so I don't know if it's easily doable with standard software, without writing a script or plugin.
So, in theory, this would be the absolute "wrong" way of playing this song, but in reality it comes out just as perfect and armonic only in its own unique way, because the feeling of the song is just never lost, just transformed. It carries the same meaning, only in a different manner. I don't know, this is so mind blowing to me for some reason, like we are being introduced to parallel universes or something...
I don't have absolute pitch, and I can't see any single tone as a colour. But once I heard this recording, it immediately gave me impression of watching colour negatives. You are able to see shapes, you may even recognize the faces (if there were faces on the photos), but still most of a picture is missing, let alone the true colours. The rhythm of "Für Elise" is so clear that you could just as well play random notes, and still the listener will have a clue about the original melody. But feelings are not there. Take the "dramatic part" - with only high tones it's not dramatic at all. However, the experiment (or perhaps just a joke) is very interesting indeed.
I would love to hear an actual song, made out of the melody the part you usually immediatly associate with Für Elise, just inverted . I really liked the melody of it.
Yeah, I'd also be interested in a non-MIDI performance; I was hoping I'd see a link to one in these comments once I realized I was watching a four-year old video!
There's an app called photosounder (quite old) based on creating spectrograms, and seeing how image operations on the spectrogram influence the music. If you flip the image along some frequency/semitone (while still in logarithmic scaling) this has a similar effect as the midiflip about the frequency/semitone. While the melody will be recognizable, it is not exactly the same considering that all frequency content of the music is flipped so the timbre will change. It is not as clean sounding as midiflip.
It sounds like a a retro-videogame
So I wasn't the only one who thought this!
Marco Molinati Beethoven + Zelda 8-bit
Everything sounds like videogame music inverted... What does videogame music sounds like inverted?
I think that's mostly because it's MIDI though. If someone played it by hand, or used a more advanced composing program, I don't think it would sound like video game music.
Marco Molinati lol
Sounds like the music of a video game boss battle made in the 18th century
InCrIpTiOn there were no video games in the 18th century
CyberDonkeyMobile it was a joke
Logan Finn - Student : Actual video games weren't invented until the 1970's unless you count what I wouldn't even call a video game that was made in 1952
Wasn't the first video game made by 2 women playing tennis with an oscilloscope?
Reminds me heavily of Final Fantasy 2 - 4
He should invert Flight of The Bumble bee and make every old person's favourite rave song
If he hasn't done that in the four years since your comment was posted, he certainly should.
@@elenaderoet4926 oh wow only 2 hours ago
ok, here I did it -> th-cam.com/video/3rr2o5A0nhQ/w-d-xo.html
Nw and improved March of the Bumblebees, inverted - now with lyrics! Hope you enjoyment

0:58 sounds amazing
Guguc112 I would say that it starts sounding cool at 0:48, it sounds like something taken from a video game 😄
Guguc112 yes it does
That played on guitar would be rad.
This sounds so cool. I might steal that arpeggio.
Bogdán Komáromi Thief!!

You could say "Arpeggio of Blue Steal"
yaron herman already did it ;-; (Yaron Herman - Legs to Run, can't find it on yt but it's on spotify)
I'd be interested in hearing what this and the original sound like together
Had the exact same thought right now
tried it. it is a little messed up but not creepy even the slightest.
umm... i can't post. i litterally opened two pages and opened this in one and opened the original in the other one.
I can play them together lol, I'm intrigued too
TH-cam doubler is perfect for this.
youtubedoubler.com/kGVn
It's so familiar, and yet so unknown. Sometimes, a new perspective can change your whole world.
Sounds like it could be good for a beat for just background music, actually. I also now want sheet music of this. :p
Well if you wanted to really badly, you could just take existing sheet music of Fur Elise, flip it over, and read from the bottom to the top.
Done Sly
No it doesn't work like that. This is inverted relative to the first note, a.k.a. the E note at the beginning
NukeML ah right, forgot about that for some reason.
oh hi :D
Cuz inverting something at C is so much harder than inverting at at the E lol.. Take the upper note, check distance to E (good interval reading practice actually) and just write it down :D Not that hard. Just do it one part at a time, then practice it, then next.

Oh please let me know when you do! :D

Listening to this with the original Fur Elise in another tab is really trippy
Gonna have to try this when I'm home and got my laptop on!

It's interesting how the minor chords become major and vice versa.

@@zacharybaker4681 Also, diminished and augmented triads are still diminished and augmented triads when inverted.
That final chord is incredibly strange and very pretty. This was actually really interesting.
It sounds like the background music to a fairy forest. I love it.
Yup.
Very Zelda-esque
That last chord, though 😍 I love it
Ray Tanhì yes, that’s what I was thinking!
You know a song is a classic when you can play it backwards, in reverse, or even chopped up and people still love it.
Honestly I really like the last chord at 2:30. It sounds really hopeful at the end, which contrasts with the original dark, minor key center ending.
Sounds like role playing video game music for when you meet the whimsically enigmatic character that eventually joins your party after a series of interesting, but brief, encounters.

I wonder if the musical prodigies could automatically do this in their head with any song without transcribing it first.
Not without training beforehand. I don't think so. Don't forget how much practice our musical prodigies had before you heard them play something ;)
it would fit well the beginning for a sci-fi movie intro :)
you've introduced me to my new obsession. thank you.
This is actually pretty good
This video is so satisfying
The 2nd movement sounds so freaking cool
This sounds like a song for winter :D because of those high notes
This is from the parallel universe where Beethoven and Elise were happily married for lifetime ❤️
if this weren't a piano sound, it wouldn't be out of place in the Undertale OST! awesome stuff as usual, andrew.

This really should be thrown into an 8bit format, then you'll get that boss battle sound through properly :D
This honestly makes me smile

This would be the music that'd play in a magical forest, in my opinion.
The main part of the song sounds like a song in a 90s game like zela when it's night.
played with the right tempo and idk probably higher pitch this would make awesomely creepy soundtrack for a movie or game!
Have you tried playing it time-reversed?
good job. this piece sounds very interesting in reverse, and it's cute too

strangely soothing

The sound is so familiar yet... imperative! It makes my hair stand on end.
For some reason I like this a lot
Showing this to my Theory teacher. We are learning 12 tone music and set theory. This will be a fun example of inversion that isn't atonal.
any way to get the midi??
