    I’ve been using this as a day pack since Easter and have to agree with a lot of the points. Haven’t had a bottle fall out but I see the potential with the side pockets/straps. I have found work around for the lack of compartments tho- the rain cover is actually detachable. Take it out the bottom pocket and stuff it in one of the side pockets where it will remain unlike a bottle (or leave it home if you are confident about the weather, I’m Scottish, so I’m not…). You now have a nice small stash pocket on the bottom for valuables etc which is also a less likely place for a potential thief to look (in the unlikely event someone is trying to pick pocket you in the hills….).

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cal! This is genius! Not sure why I didn't think about that. The lack of just one more pocket was probably my biggest gripe, but that bottom pocket would be the perfect place for my first aid kit and some other items. Love your comment about being Scottish so not being confident about the weather! 😂 I lived in the UK for 18 months, and I learned to NEVER be confident that it wouldn't rain! 🤣
      The hike where the bottle fell out did include some short climbs, bouldering, and hoisting small children up and over obstacles. So may not happen on a regular hike.
      Thank so much for watching and for your comment! Really appreciate it!

    Have you seen the new Osprey Hikelite 26 (for 2023)?
    I don´t know exactly what they changed, but they have changed the mesh water bottle pockets, they are now longer/taller.

    I actually like my Hikelite 26 quite a bit, but with that said....you nailed my number one complaint. Side pockets are absolutely terrible.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, Steve! Ya, those side pockets are kind of a deal killer for me. The other day I grabbed it for a day hike to give it another chance and chucked my 32 oz Nalgene in a side pocket. I bent down to pick up my dog and put her in the bed of my truck and the Nalgene fell out... 😖
      BUT I'm glad to hear from someone who really likes the Hikelite 26 because it means that Osprey isn't totally crazy for making it! We all like different things in all gear, but I think especially when it comes to backpacks.
      Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! Truly appreciated!

    My absolute priorities where : 1. Lightest possible (big time) 2. Airflow back (excellent) 3. Less than 30 liters (perfect) 4. Camelback system (perfect). This bag is perfect for me ! I love it. Got it for an excellent price on top of it... ;-)

    I really appreciate your critical approach in this review! I find it especially helpful because, in this case, the criticisms you made helped me determine that this was actually the right pack for me. Regarding the lack of internal space, your commentary reminded me that my reason for being interested in the Hikelite in the first place is that it weighs nearly a pound less than the Talon 33. For my purposes (bagging Cascade summits), I shouldn't be looking to bring so much kit that I need a host of organization pockets.
    I wish they used the same material for the side-pockets as they do on the Rook, though. I'm always cramming stuff in those, and I've yet to lose anything; poles, bug spray, bear spray, nalgenes, crocs, tent, panini...

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      NICE! I'm glad this pack works for you! Means that Osprey knew what they were doing when they made it, even if it didn't work for me!
      With a couple tweaks, I think I would really like it. I keep meaning to try the smaller Talon to compare them.
      Thanks for watching!

    I like the rain cover for sure. I don't own a day pack really. I never considered that you have to carry water for the dogs. That helps with my puppy fever I've been suffering from. Lol

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! Seriously have to take soooo much water for the huskies. We took a 6 mile hike and finished off 3 liters between us, and I was going easy on the water to make sure they had enough!
      Puppy fever is DANGEROUS! 🤣 They are a lot more work than I really understood, but I love my girls Luna and Kya, so I'm glad we gave in to the fever. 🤣🐕❤🐕

    I agree completely with your review. Placing the water bladder sleeve with the main compartment is a problem. I've found that putting much of anything into the main compartment tends to pinch the water bladder as it empties resulting in little to no flow through the hose. The only way I've found to get water in that case is to reach back and lift the bottom of the backpack to release pressure on the bladder. I haven't had that issue with any of my other Osprey packs. I regret buying the pack and plan to sell it soon.

  • @retireddac

    You and I seem to have very similar pack preferences. I agree with your thoughts on this one. I use my Osprey Talon 22 or Mountainsmith Fanny packs on almost all day trips. I would love to get the Talon 33 but can’t justify it with the others I own. I would love to see you review a large Mountainsmith Fanny pack with the shoulder straps. I had to switch because of a compressed spine injury but once I wore it the first 2-3 hot days and had nothing touching my back I had a hard time going back to any backpack since it allows your shirt back to breath in the wind there is much less sweat. Thanks for the great reviews. Super channel

      Thanks Thor! I’ve wondered about the Talon 22 and I think I would like it a lot more than this Hikelite. But I’m in the same boat as you…just can’t justify another pack. 🤣 But I do like the idea of the Fanny pack because with anything touch my back it just gets gross… 🤢🤣🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m going to look up that Mountainsmith one and give it a thought. Thanks for the recommendation! And thanks for watching and leaving your comments! It’s awesome!

    I am with you regarding the lack of compartments. I, too, like to have my stuff in a specific place to have easy and fast access to it. Rummaging makes me grumpy! I was the one hiding a small handbag in my match sack when they were all the rage back in the 80s, just so I could organize my stuff. :D And the bladder in the main compartment does hog a lot of space! The Mira 22 would be my pack of choice to get the trampoline back coupled with a lot of seperate compartments. Now that I mention it, I might try to find one for me second hand. Thank you for the review it was entertaining and informative!

      Thanks, Y! I'll have to check out the Mira 22! I love my Talon 33, but feel like I should be able to find something smaller that still works. Sometimes second hand is the best way to buy packs! Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words!

    So far for a 20l pack, I still love my Black Diamond magnum 20. It has similar feature as the hike lite minus the rain cover and trekking pole attachment. But it has 2 external quick access pockets and a kangaroo pouch with shock cord and a daisy chain loop. I also use Talon 33 as my transitional pack for longer hikes and overnighters. Great review though. 👍

      Thanks, Ryan! Ya, I love my Talon 33 for day hikes. I think I've finally got my gear dialed in enough I might be able to get away with a quick overnighter with it. May have to try that this year.

    Rain cover is cool. My sweatty back likes the idea of that mesh. If we're being fair, a 26L pack is pretty small, and it's not like they try to hide it, it's advertised right on the tag. I personally use a 40L VenturePal for day trips. Most of what you're dogging on it for seems to be about the size of it not being big enough, so not really fair to compare it to larger packs. We'd be interested to know how it stacks up against other small day packs of similar size. For a smaller person one of us might be bringing on a trip, that won't be carrying as much stuff, that could be the perfect option, and I think your daughter will enjoy that pack a lot.

      I think you nailed it! Like I said, I have a REALLY hard time not comparing it to my favorite--the Talon 33. But I'm on the hunt for a smaller pack in the 20 liter range that has features I like. I may check out a Syncro next. My daughter is beyond THRILLED about this pack. So far she's been using my 20 year old camel back you see hanging behind me when we go hiking together. 🤣

    I own an embarrassing amount of Osprey packs and find the Hikelite to be a really weird addition. There are so many other Osprey day packs that defeat it at every avenue, and it doesn't offer a single advantage.
    On the other hand, I own the Daylite Plus and I think it is a fairly brilliant pack. Sure, it has a similar build, but it doesn't have the air speed system, allowing it to pack more in my opinion, while at the same time remaining really comfortable. It has an external bladder, laptop sleeve, and small slash pocket on the outer adjustable pocket that the Hikelite doesn't offer. I love the Daylite Plus and feel that weirdly it offers more in a lot of ways. Honestly, I think the Hikelite is poorly designed. They tried to take the best elements of their hiking packs and shove them into what is essentially a travel pack amd just came up with an incongruous mess. Not sure what the goal was on this one.

      I think you nailed it. Hikelite 26 = incongrous mess. 🎯
      I'm glad I'm not the only one with an Osprey problem. 🤣 I am definitely going to check out the Daylite Plus, because I would love to find something smaller than the Talon 33 for shorter day hikes. I'm tempted by the Talon Pro 20, but it is just so dang expensive!
      Thanks for watching!

      @@DoseofDirt It is by no means the perfect day pack. Currently, the Talon 26 is perfect for me in terms of day hikes, but I really like the Daylite for traveling and light hiking since it isn't too tall and is pretty inconspicuous. I can fit way more than I thought into it and find it shockingly comfy at 21l without a proper hip belt. Also, ever checked out Gregory? I find their design slightly more refined and LOVE the Miwoks for day packs, but prefer Osprey suspension systems. I have the the Miwok 32 and prefer it to my Stratos 36 (Osprey suspension makes it more comfy, but also allows the smaller Miwok to carry more in my opinion). I'd love to see your opinions and comparisons of these. Great channel and keep it up. You deserve more views :)

      @@cr8460 I've been looking at them online and I like the size and look of it. Like you said, it's just inconspicuous but can still hold quite a bit. I take my huskies for 3-6 mile hikes a few times a week and this bag would be perfect to just keep ready for those types of hikes. Enough room for what I need without being way too big.
      Funny you bring up Gregory. My brother-in-law and I went to REI so he could try some packs on. He was sold on an Osprey Atmos, but after trying a bunch on he went with a Gregory Baltoro, and I have to say it seemed pretty nice. I haven't looked at their day packs, but will definitely have to. Their overnight packs seem really solid and I like some of their features more than Osprey (don't tell anyone I said that! 😱🤣).

    Don’t think it’s a fair review. For example, why do you complain about it not having hip belt pockets… you knew that before you bought it. To me it seems stupid to complain about features on a bag and at the same time on multiple occasions state that the bag doesn’t meet your needs. No, it doesn’t, because the bag is designed to accommodate different needs. There is nothing wrong with the bag, you just bought the wrong one. Fine if the cons are based on reasonable facts like the lack of ways to strap a bottle in the side pocket but other than that, a review like this is useless to me.
