    6 years on and this laptop is still my daily driver! awesome machine!

    I have had this laptop for about a week, a few notes...
    First my specs:
    Windows 7 Pro (yes that's an option here)
    8GB RAM
    Core i5
    256 SSD
    1080p Non-touch screen
    Was around $1379USD
    Used for a mix of business and personal. Lots of typing, simple video editing in Adobe Premiere CC, and travel.
    Battery is quite good, with mild internet use on low screen brightness (I keep mine low around 30%) I get around 10 hours.
    The finger print reader works wonderfully, I haven't had to be careful about how quickly I swipe and very rarely have to do it twice.
    The 1080p TN panel is what you would expect. I find people are too picky about their displays (I think it looks great) but maybe I'm just not picky enough.
    When turning the screen brightness down, it does not go all the way off, which would be nice in those situations where you want to listen to music but not waste battery on the screen.
    The keyboard is a dream to use, no complaints - except as always I wish the Ctrl button position was swapped with Fn.
    Trackpad works very well, with a just-right amount of friction. Maybe a little too sensitive in movement sometimes but I haven't fiddled with settings. Have had no issues with typing accidentally causing mouse movement or clicks. Two-finger scroll is above average for Windows laptops but still nowhere near the level of the fruity variety.
    The microphone quality is anecdotally very good. I haven't recorded any tests but in a Skype conversation with someone I talk to for hours every day for work, he said he didn't notice any difference between that and my Blue Yeti (a near-professional microphone). In the right environment and setup, the Yeti will blow this out of the water, but it's nice to know the laptop holds its own.
    I disagree with the review on sound quality. Volume is really great, but since the speakers are facing down, quality suffers noticeably. I never (ever) use speakers on a laptop so it's not a problem for me, but if you are desperate for rich bass or the clarity you would get with top-facing speakers, look elsewhere (yes I know rich bass isn't to be expected, but it's important to know these things going in).
    The laptop comes with a lot of junk software, mostly Lenovo-branded, but none of it is "in your face". It's all very easy to remove. One of the Lenovo-branded programs defaulted to having "show special offers" checked, which was a red flag. But it was a relatively unneeded program so I removed it and that was that. I couldn't find any other warning signs, no obviously suspicious SSL exceptions or the like. Installed Kaspersky and updated Windows defender and nothing was flagged there.
    I normally remove manufacturer utilities for things like battery life, wifi "helpers", and the like. However I was pleasantly surprised by the breadth of options found in the Lenovo battery software, so I kept it.
    Adobe Premiere has a problem trying to use OpenCL accelerated rendering. This is most likely an issue with drivers for the HD 5500 (which is claimed to support OpenCL), but I couldn't get proper drivers working. Switching to software encoding (as I expected to have to do from day one anyway) resolved the issue. GPU acceleration would be nice but whatever.
    Overall I'm very happy with this thing. It's light, sturdy, fast, and does its job without frills.

      No, I sold this laptop about 2 years ago. It was great for the three years I had it, but the lack of GPU really started to affect my productivity. I went with a much thicker/heavier laptop with a dedicated GPU. It's not as nice to use or carry, but whatever.

    "Of course, it opens up 180 degrees flat. I always wonder who needs that, maybe it's more useful with the touch screen." Though I would chime in on that one... as someone who has repaired a lot of laptops, this has been a feature that goes way back in the T series (or any of their enterprise level models) that were built long before touch screens, it's used for repair-ability. One of the reasons I love working on IBM/Lenovo equipment. Their equipment is designed with techs in mind and being able to taken apart with ease.

    Thank you Lisa! I have been waiting for this review and Lenovo has managed to redeem itself. Shame the screen brightness is not optimal and while 7hrs is ok, I would have expected more. Still, this was the one I was waiting for so I am finally sold on the X1.

  • @samsulzahari2755

    As X1 carbon user, for me opening 180 flat is not about for ease of use. Its more about preventing accidential broken to the screen or hinges in case the screen is accidentally forced or hit by anything.

    Warm displays are better for long time viewing if you didn't know. Cool displays strain the eyes and contribute to overall fatigue, because blue light confuses the brain into thinking it's night time and what you are looking at is illuminated by moonlight. Getting used to a warm display will allow you to have a longer effective work day, especially if you are in a cubicle without a view of outside. Warm colors are those experienced at sun rise.

    I'd like to comment on the cursor drift that was mentioned regarding the trackpad. This is actually a configuration that can be changed. When performing a gesture on the trackpad, and hitting the edge with your finger, the cursor will by default continue to move that direction. I found this to be remarkably annoying when trying to copy text, for example. Luckily you can disable it when looking through the Lenovo's trackpad settings.

    Hi Lisa, as always, great review! One thing that I would like to know is about if there's a different typing experience between ThinkPad series, namely X1, x250, T450, or all these keyboards have the same key-travel, spacing and feedback. As a professional programmer this is very important point in the choice of a new notebook. If you can give us your feedback I'll really appreciate! Thanks.

Therefore I decide to sell it and get the same but with touch screen to accept writing with digital pen. so what is your suggestion to have the same laptop with additional touch screen with a reasonable price?

    Great review of a notebook that is big step forward in comparison to 2nd generation X1 Carbon models.
    Somehow that display didn't quite convince me, however high the resolution and IPS panel. Last generation had a serious flaw with yellow colour, this generation has poor colour gamut... Hmmmm...?!?
    We heard nothing about fan noise and temperature. I take it as nothing much to talk about.

    Superfish was installed on most cheap Lenovo computers. So you're right the ThinkPads are not affected because they demand a premium price. Lenovo can't make that profit margin on cheaper computers so they made a deal with Superfish where are they create ads on website that Lenovo customers go to, then turns around and pays Lenovo. That's how Lenovo makes up for the profit margin on cheaper computers which is very little. In doing so they created a security breach that's unforgivable! And what makes it worse they knew about it!

    • @yu.niverse
      @yu.niverse 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its super easy to not worry about Superfish, just reinstall Windows when you buy a new lenovo. Standard procedure whenever I get a new machine because it removes all bloatware from the manufacturer.

There is not a single video review on the T450s out there, so you would make a bunch of people happy! Would love a comparison of the gripes on the T450s (short battery life, possible coil whine, palmrest squeaks on pressure) vs. X1C (overheats when covered below, problems with dpi scaling). Thanks a lot!

    One of the things you might want to check out with some of the manufacturers is if certain parts are whitelisted. Lenovo is known for this. You cannot replace many components (wifi cards/wlan) unless the firmware is hard encoded with Lenovo code. They are usually the same items that can be ordered, but the non-Lenovo coded one will not work. Also, the Lenovo version can cost as much as 10Xs as much if you can even purchase it. The Lenovo forums are full of people complaining about it.

    Is there a review that covers the usage of the LTE card? The last time I had cellular data in my laptop was the T60p. That was a beast (and still runs today when I turn it on) but the EVDO data was horrendous when it worked. When it didn't the software to connect (Verizon Connect, I think) crashed all the time. And you had to log in all the time.
    I'd love to see the LTE interact with the OS via the software. Is it Verizon software or Microsoft or Lenovo? Is it stable? Can it sleep and wake up without crashing? Is it as usable as, for example, an iPad?

I have been a long time ThinkPad user currently using a T440s but I would like to move to a lighter ultra book and the X1 is just the deal. However as I use this machine as my daily work horse I need larger than 512gb HDD capacity. I see if I customize one of the machines I can chose the basic 128gb Serial ATA. My question is do you think I would be able to remove the 128gb and use a 1tb 7mm crucial (CT1000BX100SSD1) drive that I currently use in my T440s.

    Would this computer or the spectre x360 be suitable for an engineering student, or do they not have enough power?

    What are the possible upgrades you can do to this computer? Also for the SSD what connector does it use? (ex.SATA3, M2) I do know that you cannot upgrade the RAM just wondering if there are any other ones.

    hi, thanks for the great vid. I need to buy a laptop for doing CAD designs and performance is important. I'm comparing X1 carbon with T450s, wt's the difference between 256GB SSD & 1TB HDD+16GB SSD? and the difference in graphics card? Intel HD Grapics 5500 vs NVIDIA GeForce 940M? which model would u recommend? highly appreciate your opinion

    • @marialouiseelkjr9212
      @marialouiseelkjr9212 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gsmarcom I am still in between those two models. So have you bought one? I would like to get x1 carbon but I still think t450s will be a better option for us. I cant decide!!!! :/

    • @gsmarcom
      @gsmarcom 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      i bought t450s finally. reasons: bigger HD, more ports (SD card, VGA) hence more convenient, independent graphics card. X1 Carbon's biggest advantage is super lightweight but T450s is not too much heavier, so I chose T450s finally.

      thank you for the answer. I think im also gonna go with t450s invidia for cad work at school. how does it feel? Is it good for carrying around. I really hate sd card and vga port. is 14 inch screen too big?

    • @gsmarcom
      @gsmarcom 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's slim n sleek, 14 inch is just right.

      thanks :) i am scrared that its gonna look ugly. i mean caarbon is much more portable but no graphics. t450s should be a very nice pick for the upcoming years. I am getting it very soon. I hope they dont sell out. its 1250 euros in Vienna. With montly payment for three years 1400 euros. do you have the one with invidia? and how much did you pay for it?

    Ugh. I've a T420s that I use at home, mostly as a linux machine and my mighty, well-upgraded but getting tired x220.... and I've been thinking of upgrading. Thought I'd settled on the TP Yoga 14 but now that I've watched your vids on this newer X1 Carbon and the new X250 I'm back at square one! :)
    I'm wondering if I'll really notice enough difference for it to be worth it, but I suppose I'd really just love the responsiveness and light weight and lovely IPS screen of my X220 but with a little more real estate like my T420s (which has the, aptly put, very "meh" TN screen - hence I use it for non-graphic work - waste of space since I'm a part time photographer IMO).
    I'm rambling. Trying to decide what to do - any input appreciated. Cheers and love your reviews.

      +Kevin Rosinbum : Lenovo has two categories > 1)consumer products 2) professional products.
      professional category : x1 carbon ,x series & T series are the best. x1 carbon is senior to x series but T series is heavy with dvdrw
      rest are consumer category for outlets with their 20-25% markups from staples to best buy

    • @eyewandersfoto

      +skylark304 Yes I've been a systems admin for many years and I know how Lenovo has placed the old IBM legacy to market. Not sure what that has to do with my question... But nonetheless, purchased a refurbed TPYoga14 so my question is mostly moot, or I'll soon answer it myself. :)
