Founded nearly 60 years ago by the late mariachi “giant” Natividad “Nati” Cano, Mariachi Los Camperos has been instrumental in bringing mariachi out of the traditional venue, the cantinas, and into concert halls around the world.
Cano's seminal contribution to mariachi was marked by institutions. Those include UCLA, where he taught for many years and revitalized the "Music of Mexico" program, and the Smithsonian Museum, whose recording label Smithsonian Folkways released a number of albums recorded by Los Camperos, including the Grammy winner, Amor, Dolor y Lágrima, and later Tradición, Arte y Pasión, released in 2015 and nominated for a Grammy in 2016. In 2015, Jesús "Chuy" Guzmán succeeded Cano as Music Director of the ensemble and the group continues to thrive.
With nine albums released since their inception and multiple Grammy Award wins and nominations, this performance will showcase to the Bloomington community the vibrancy and intensity that distinguishes this group as one of the finest mariachi bands in the world.
