Trans - Pennine

  • In October 1988 it looked like loco hauled Trans - Pennine trains would be entering their last year of service and the class 158 Express Sprinter would soon be with us. Many other changes were taking place along the route of the Trans - Pennine. Perhaps the biggest change being the re-routing via Manchester Piccadilly. Since making the film every station along the route except Liverpool has seen change due in the main to the electrification of the East Coast Main Line. Trans - Pennine sets out to record the passage of 2 trains as they race from Newcastle and Liverpool with a brief visit to each town served along the way. Since writing these notes in 1990 many more changes have taken place Even the then new 158 is a distant memory on this route.

      Thank you megamanmuppet. Happy days indeed when we had proper locomotives hauling stock made for comfort . So much has changed since then and not only the trains.

    This video is a very comprehensive record of the loco hauled Trans-Pennines and it's nice that you have included some background footage from places of interest along the route. I used to love travelling from Newcastle to Manchester in a comfortable Mk.2 hauled by a proper loco. It's not the same at all on a class 185 now!

    Thank you. I am pleased you also like the background footage showing a little of the towns served by these trains. I also used these trains a lot to travel up to Newcastle where my Father lived. Things are looking up Loco hauled stock is on order and will be introduced in the near future. I doubt they will be as nice to ride as a Mk2 with class 47 hauling but sure to be better than a 185. I also filmed The End of Trans-pennine with the last departures from Newcastle. They added extra coaches on the final train at the last moment. Something the private companies do not cater for. Just cram everyone in

    Brilliantly done! I miss these services! Although they were better with peaks on the front!

    I came back to this video today (having very much enjoyed it the previous times) to do a bit of research on the MK2A TSO interiors. The fact that the tables were black means not too much work on my Graham Farish N gauge versions!

      I like to film the interior of stock because it is something often ignored and like you being a model maker I think it will help in future when details like this are forgotten.

      @@cedarcamThere is very little such footage out there, so you're absolutely right - this footage is invaluable. I also have a customised Trans-Pennine rake coming shortly. MK1 BG, MK2A FK and 5 x MK2A TSOs. I'll do the interiors myself, though!

      @@flymajj Fantastic. I got the Lima rake years ago and kept them mint boxed along with the 47. I model mid 70's so these were for my collection. I have probably shown all the interior I have in this video but have a look on my Trans Pennine Raw Video and Out takes I uploaded. Here is part 1 of 17 and some more to come from the last days when I get to it. th-cam.com/video/7-NpWkU6MfE/w-d-xo.html

      @@cedarcamI've definitely watched that before as well, but it definitely bears re-watching. I am from Darlington and lived near the ECML. I remember the TP trains in the late 1980s before we moved to Northumberland in 1989. I was only a kid and missed the last couple of years of loco-hauled operations. Now I'm 44 and am rather nostalgic about it!

      @@flymajjMy Dad lived in Newcastle and I am about half way between there and Liverpool. I used the trains a lot going to see him. When I found out loco hauled was coming to an end I decided to record the final years Well it took a lot longer than I expected, so glad I began when I did. By the end full TP livery was becoming scarce and fewer coaches to get us used to being cramped in a 150 unit. Thank goodness that did not last long as the 158's were introduced. I still like those units but not a patch on what we had before. I am luck I got to travel loco hauled a lot and rather nostalgic too which is why I model mid 70's

    Yes they were You are right. Trans-Pennine was made during the last years of scheduled loco hauled service and was edited on VHS. After that I filmed some more including the last loco hauled train from Newcastle on 20th January 1991. The end of my film The End of Trans-Pennine shows the final train being prepared and at Leeds the last North bound service. After that all trains were supposed to be class 150 unit formations or 158's as they became available. A few loco hauled workings remained.

    Prior to May 1989, all services from Yorkshire/Pennines/Stalybridge ran to Victoria and none to Piccadilly - any reason as to why this was? Was it to do with the Windsor chord?

    • @cedarcam
      @cedarcam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't really know why the route was changed possibly because there are more connections from Piccadilly and the huge amount of students going to university there. The journey to Victoria from Stalybridge was quicker in those days. Today trains serve both stations using the chord which back then was an uncertainty although talked about for some years

    • @harrybroughton4999

      @@cedarcam Thanks for your reply! I never knew Stalybridge-Victoria used to be quicker than it is now

    • @cedarcam
      @cedarcam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@harrybroughton4999 It was not a lot quicker but I realised when we were diverted that way one day. The slow section through Guide Bridge and often stopped outside Piccadilly because the trains going into 14 have to cross right over must make the difference

    • @megamanmuppet
      @megamanmuppet ปีที่แล้ว

      It couldn’t readily be done until the remodelling of Piccadilly in October 1988.
