    This is the video that changed me as a surf fisherman. It completely changed the way I think about and approach throwing a bucktail, or any lure really. Thank you mr. skinner.

    I read your book years ago without a boat and have used many of your techniques from the surf, yetties, and banks. Now with a boat, I always have a rod with a bucktail and have caught king mackerel, cobia, dolphinfish, grouper, snapper but either on shallow bottom water or on the surface. Have tried bigger heavier bucktails but nothing compares to those 1/2 to 1 1/2 oz smaller profile ones. Read your book again for a refresher and remembered this technique. Very eager to try this on SE Florida!

    Thank you John for the video. I went flounder fishing yesterday and a was casting for bass using this technique and I caught my first bas weighing 20 pounds.

    I don't do it from my kayak because it would require too much paddling back into the current for each drift.
    Many things that gamefish eat don't have a lot of action - they just glide along.

    I love your videos! I look up to you as a fisherman your videos taught me ALOT! THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE! Also I love seeing your videos with your DAUGHTER AND FATHER! I been trying to teach my 9 & 13 year old sons how to fish! I wish you were a guide or chartered a boat because I would love to fish with you!!! Also you are a very well known name from Holbrook to Montauk. I think if you were a guide or chartered you make a lot of money from the people who love you! BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR FATHER AND GOOD LUCK TO YOUR DAUGHTER IN COLLEGE & THE REST OF YOUR FAMILY!!!! Best to you & family! Keep up the great work & thanks!

    I describe a season of fishing, mostly surf, from the first signs of life in the spring until the snow flies. Stripers, blues, fluke... with techniques and strategies for catching integrated into every chapter, but reads like a story book rather than a how-to.

    Trust me, a 4-ounce bucktail by itself would not stay near the bottom under the conditions we were fishing. The 3-way rig, with 10- to 20-ounce sinkers, is a standard rig in those waters, plum gut, The Fishers Island Race,...

    @DancingforDollarsX
    I use 50# braid for the main line. Given the overhand knot in the 50# mono sinker dropper, it will break before the main line. 15# would break too easily and I'd lose too much lead.

  • @JohnSkinnerFishing
    @JohnSkinnerFishing  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Heavy jigs have been around awhile, and they've never caught on as a replacement for the 3-way. This fishing is often over rocky structure, and you'd be more prone to snagging with that big pricey bucktail instead of the sinker which is the most common loss on a 3-way snag. Also, the heavy jig wouldn't have the movement in the current that the light jig on the 5-foot horizontal leader does.

    @PaintballOO7
    This is mostly a boat technique. For bucktailing from shore, it's mostly a matter of using the right combination of bucktail weight, cast placement, and retrieve speed.

  • @JohnSkinnerFishing
    @JohnSkinnerFishing  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Glad you found the book helpful. Thanks.

  • @JohnSkinnerFishing
    @JohnSkinnerFishing  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, because it's typically used with a pretty fast drift, like 2+ mph. You'd end up doing a lot of paddling (or peddling).

  • @JohnSkinnerFishing
    @JohnSkinnerFishing  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @pepefenito
    When you're on the charterboat, just follow the charter captain's advice. They're the experts in the places they fish.
    The tube would not cast well from a pier.
    I'm quite sure a bucktail tipped with a gulp eel would work.

  • @JohnSkinnerFishing
    @JohnSkinnerFishing  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's typically done in at least 20 feet, but usually 30-60.

  • @JohnSkinnerFishing

  • @donjoe72
    @donjoe72 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of the overhand knot I just use lower pound test line to my sinker for the same reason you described. If the sinker snags that will be all I'll lose on a break off.

  • @JohnSkinnerFishing
    @JohnSkinnerFishing  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does not get tangled. The sinkers are in the 10- to 16-ounce range - much heavier than bucktails. No bouncing.

  • @JohnSkinnerFishing
    @JohnSkinnerFishing  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would stick to pork rind for this kind of fishing. 1 to 1.5 ounce bucktails work well for 3-way rigging, as long as they have a sturdy hook.

    Question: I've never caught a bass before and so it will be my target this upcoming season. I will be most likely going on a boat for them (fishing charter) (since I don't own a boat), Will your technique work in that situation where I won't know whats under me but if theres fish i will catch them?And also on one of your other vids, you were tubing with Gulp worms. Would that work with cast and retrieve from like a pier?. And also , do gulp eels work if you hook them onto a bucktail on/off boat?

    John skinner What’s the point of the sinker weight on this rig, I’ve been using your style of hi-Lo Spro vertical Bucktail with a teaser for Fluke very successfully, and now want to try for strippers I like this idea because it’s a style of fishing I understand. But I don’t understand why your using a sinker with a bucktail... or I guess a better question is why not just use a hi-lo rig?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is heavy current and 50' of water. Frequently 2- to 4knt current. You need 10-16 ounces to stay down.

  • @777AndrewR
    @777AndrewR 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    John is using a 3 way rig in fall for stripers with a cannon ball sinker as opposed to just the bucktail only is what?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I understood your question, the extra weight is needed because of current and depth. Otherwise you'd need a very heavy bucktail.
