  • I recently bought another 8 wire recordings from the US and now I get to play them back and discover what they contain. In this video I give you a sneak preview of what I found on those 70 year old recordings. They probably have not been listened to in decades.

    My mother worked for Sears, Roebuck and Company her whole career. "Silvertone" was Sears' brand for musical instruments and later for radios, then used for other electronics such as TVs. Sears also was based in Chicago as was Webster-Chicago (Of course),

      Thanks for the information on Silvertone. I have many Silvertone wires in my collection. It was definitely the most popular brand.

    This is cool. I do this with old reel to reel tape. Mostly music but every now then you get that recorded "letter" to a family member. It's a ghostly experience.

    I never expected to hear the word "video" on a wire recording!

    For all we know, these may be the only surviving transcriptions of these broadcasts.

      Some of them would be the only ones. I do have some radio plays that are thought to have been lost to history.

    In Germany, where the first magnetic tape recorders were used in radio stations and record manufacturers, they sold machines like this from Schaub Lorenz.

    How is it these reels survive all these years without the wire rusting? Are they nickel coated?

    • @brucemccole1971
      @brucemccole1971  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The wire is made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is not normally magnetic, but it clearly retains enough magnetic properties to be able to reproduce high quality audio. The wires are as bright and shiny as it was the day that they were made.

      Anymore just trying to learn songs as a drummer I have to resort to Spotify. This being said, it used to be easy to just download songs to a computer, burn and use in car as needed or house gear and even record to cassette tapes from CD's. No copy righted resale has ever been done on my watch. Long story short I love tape recording because no software is needed. A wire recorder is no different but the quality is inferior playback wise of course. Again same great technology applies. Wire recorders still amaze me on playback more than not.

    I’ll check what’s written on my reels and be back in touch . I saw one had Baptist testimonies haha .

    I'm so glad none of the Adams reels snarled during playback. Like you, I was just getting into the song when it jammed.
    Your series of videos makes me want to get one of my Webster Chicago units up and running. I got three of them when the State Historical Society of Missouri was moving into their glitzy new building, and they were purging decades of supplies that had accumulated in their basement. There are at least two reels inside one of the cases. I'm intrigued by what treasures I might discover on them.
    On a side note, this guy repurposed the same model wire recorder to use as a guitar amplifier, with pretty spectacular results. th-cam.com/video/Oq49MkT7ol8/w-d-xo.html

      Yes, I saw that video. I encourage you to restore it if you can. May need new capacitors but give it a shot. Always exciting to discover what's on those historic artifacts. I have another 5 on their way here from the US. I also have some recordings of radio plays from the c1940s that were thought to have been lost to history, so they are the only copies existing in the world

    hi Bruce, Silvertone seems to reappear year to year with cheap western made guitars, even Paul Stan.ey from kiss was a modern silver tone endorser back about 2003-2006. There old guitar amps are stillsought after and there's pedal makers who have made silvertone style circuits in peddle to get that tone.

    Hi,
    Have you ever digitized the content of any of these? If so, what issues did you come across regarding compatibility, impedance, gain, etc. I just finished refurbishing my Webster-Chicago 81-1 (looks just like yours) and have lots of spools I may want to transfer.
    Thanks for the videos and any ideas you might have.

      I just run a lead from the microphone input (yes as an output) into a line in on a preamp that has a digital output. I then run this into my PC for recording. I have digitised all my reels.

      @@brucemccole1971 it looks like I have around 18 reels . The story of my busted webster was it was left at a guest house by an American after the war and then was owned by the guest house owners who used it for a while but it obviously broke or was broken . I bought to restore to look ok externally , as I don’t have the skills to full rebuild. But will be a good ornament in my studio . I also have the original owners manual with schematics etc I can photocopy. Mine is the smaller version of yours same shape just not as tall. Mine must have been the portable version haha

    • @brucemccole1971
      @brucemccole1971  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there was a portable version that came in a carry case. I have copies of the manuals for that one already. They are amazing machines. It would be fascinating to know what was recorded on your reels.
