  • Dandelions grow nearly everywhere on Earth. And while some consider them a weedy menace, they have a long tradition of being cultivated and used for food, medicine and ornamentation. At Baker Creek, we are particularly excited about two Asian dandelion varieties, a Chinese pink with a wonderful yellow cream interior; and a Japanese variety with white blooms that are much sought after.

    I am one of those people who loves to see those beautiful little dandelion flowers popping up in my yard.
    If you make coffee, you can't use a drip coffee maker. They have to be boiled in an old fashioned percolator. For best flavor, put the roasted ground up roots into a large sieve. Immerse it in a pot of gently boiling water until it reaches your desired strength. Mine has a rich, complex flavor with chocolate undertones.

    Their long tap roots bring calcium up to the surface. They’re a very beneficial little plant. Plus the bees love them.

    I had a hippie woman sitting in my yard eating the dandelions. I went out to make sure she wasn't needing a paramedic, too drunk or stoned and she looked at me and chirped "I bet you think I'm strange". She then preceded to tell me the history and uses of the plant. I let her carry on till she was short of breath and advised her that we used them too but not the ones where the dog crapped.

    Look interesting, might try considering the bitterness is usually from oxalic acids. Less bitterness means it could have less of that

      Bitter vegetables cleanse toxins out of the liver. Great stuff to know and make use of, in this polluted and toxic world we all share.

    • @wemuk5170
      @wemuk5170 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heidimisfeldt5685 Too much oxalic acid is harmful. Fortunately, unlike sorrel, spinach and chard, dandelion greens are somewhat low in the oxalic acid that can interfere with your body's ability to absorb calcium.

    • @wemuk5170
      @wemuk5170 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorrel is sour but high in oxalic acid so bitterness is maybe not an indicator of oxalic acid levels, perhaps?
