    I've washed the roots, dried them out, cut them in small chunks, put in food processor then baked in the oven. I used like a coffee filler. Hard to believe but they taste like chocolate. I follow the Eattheweeds TH-cam channel for eating wild edibles.

    Gary, a quick tip for fertilizing dandelion: make dandelion weed tea, then feed the solution back to the growing plants. They grow into monsters.

    Dandelions are super nutritious. The benefits are too numerous to list here but many websites go into great detail with all the vitamins, minerals, and health-promoting properties, including help with diabetes, digestion, the liver, and lots more. What a blessing for free. Too bad they are usually ignored or destroyed.

    Dandelions are real food and thrive even outside of a garden. I eat a lot of dandelions from my yard. The roots are great food, the crowns, the leaves, the buds way down in the center of the plant, and the flowers. I cook the roots like carrots, they are good. The leaves are biggest in the shade or tall grass. Try stripping out the center rib of the big leaves to get rid of a lot of the bitterness.

    I had no idea that the white milky stuff in dandelions is latex! Talk about learning something new every day! I'm allergic to latex, so dandelions as food won't work for me. But it cracks me up because we used to work so hard to keep them out of our lawns!

    Hi Gary. Thank you for inspiring others to 'forge' for dandelion. Yes, the dandelion is a wonderful wild edible. Once the dandelion flowers I still eat the greens. I cook them like spinach adding to soups and such. I am also harvesting chickweed right now. I have daily tea using the root and leaf, adding ashwagandha, peppermint and sencha green tea. Yummy and healthy. Take care.

    The ultimate lazy gardener's super crop. I have slugs slithering up the porch if they can smell a lettuce leaf in a pot on a high shelf. Dandelions grow everywhere without me doing any more work than bend down to pick the leaves. I did collect several pound of seeds over the last couple years to use for micro greens. I must get on with setting up a grow system for them. It's good to know what germination time to expect and temperature requirement. Thanks. Also, congratulations on your book.

    In my town, the city sprays for dandelions and believe it or not, there is an ordinance about "weed" control - meaning if you don't exercise some measures, you can get ticketed. Saw it happen to my neighbor who had a dandelion jungle. It's sad. It's also why I don't use grass clippings in my garden or compost (other than the small amount I can gather from my own space). As gardeners, we often complain about the lack of pollinators - yet fail to realize dandelion blooms often provide the first food for waking bees and other pollinators. Great perspective Gary, thank you.

    I wonder if the same tricks for making kale less bitter would work on the post flowered leaves? Like massaging to break down and release the bitterants, blanching to chemically alter the bitterants, and rinsing after cutting to wash away the bitterants once the cell walls are open. Might have to test it out.

      I dig them up from my yard. They are so common every where. And plant them in a plastic cup from like McDonald’s or something. The tap root is SOO LONG make sure to dig down about a foot so you don’t break it, bc it’s very easy to break.

      Flourish with a little TLC? If dandelions flourish any more on 5 acres without any help at all! I’d have dandelions growing everywhere including inside my house and on my roof too! I have dandelion plants practically on top of one another all over, literally hundreds if not thousands of them! Only plant that can push thru the dandelions is thistle. Which I don’t care for either plant in the least. Not for eating anyway! I’d have to be really starving to death before you ever get me to eat them!
      Now I have heard dandelion’s can be used for relieving pain too? But I have not tried it for that purpose myself.
      I believe there’s more work and time to processing dandelions for pain needs then I have to spare from all my other projects I have to do day to day for all that.
      But if you want dandelions feel free to come and take mine all you like and then some! Not even my chickens want to eat them! 😂

Second, dandalions are great! Why kill em over an aesthetics of a green and useless lawn. Those people are despeakable. I dont like them.

    Sorry, but even if you can eat them, Dandelions are weeds. Let one go to seed and they multiply like crazy. Anyone that wants them for food can easily find them growing all over the place, mostly in yards. Growing them is a very very bad idea.

    • @michaelking3206
      @michaelking3206 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Unless you know for sure when foraging them that they haven’t been contaminated from chemical fertilizers or herbicides or runoff, then it’s a safer bet to harvest from your own yard if not treating the yard with anything poisonous. Dandelions aren’t weeds. They’re just a nuisance to people who prefer full grass lawns which haven’t been around nearly as long as dandelions have. Not to mention that dandelions have a lot of health benefits.

      Not really, growing this way the plants are like 10 time larger and you can harvest massive roots grown with care.
