  • Things you NEED TO KNOW before visiting the Pyramids of Giza! How much should a camel ride cost? Are there bathrooms? What time do they open, and how much is a ticket? I've been living in Egypt over a year now and have been to the pyramids several times now, in this video I answer all of your questions and let you know what to bring and what you should be paying for things.
    Welcome to the channel! My name's Gisselle, I'm a budget traveler and have been to 6 out of the 7 continents, visiting 20+ countries, living for some time in Sydney, Australia as well as in Saigon, Vietnam. I am currently living in Cairo, Egypt and exploring all this beautiful country has to offer while visiting nearby countries as well. I am a lover of language and a culturally curious lady just making my way through life one day at a time. I live to learn, I love to travel and explore, try new things and meet interesting people anywhere and everywhere in the world. Come along with me as I solo travel the globe and discover fascinating new places, try delicious local food, meet lovely people, and share a moment in time on this beautiful planet, our Earth.

    The difference in your experience of the vendors/touts compared with the recollections of other tourists is quite significant. I have been reading varying accounts of travel to Egypt (which I am planning for later in the year) so I am very interested in this topic (I will not be alone however but with friends who actually live in Egypt). Your attitude is fundamentally different. You of course notice the poverty and dirt but do not judge the people for their condition. You embrace and embed yourself in the culture versus viewing all Egyptians as wanting your money. You are respectful and most importantly - speak enough Arabic for the vendors to be able to engage with you. They respect that you have made the effort to speak with them in Arabic. It seems to make a significant difference - and you are not 'hiding' in a white Western enclave fearing the outside world!

      Wow. What a beautifully written comment, thank you! This is the best thing I've heard all day, I'm so honored. I do try to immerse myself in the culture and don't like to judge or be on a pedestal, you are very correct about that, and I'm glad you see it. ❤
      You have friends in Egypt, that's great! That completely changes the experience, having a local contact point. You will see a much more authentic side of Egypt because of that, which sadly so many tourists miss when they visit.

Buy your ticket online to avoid waiting in line. Bring twice the amount of water you think you will need. Between the sun and wind I dried out quickly. The thing I'll add, 'cause I was there 2 days ago, is you may encounter guys at the ticket office who are there to "help." May have a badge on a lanyard, which I guess is legit, and there is no friction between them and the ticket window person. Maybe these guys are legit employees of the venue, or licensed vendors, IDK. Either way, they are hustlin' (which I respect). They will want to negotiate a ride on a horse-drawn carriage and will likely tell you the area is 'too big for walking.'' Your own level of energy and fitness should guide you on that one. Just know that whatever price for a ride gets agreed to, the drover will want a tip at the end, so factor that into your negotiations.

    Do you normally film with a phone on a lm extension pole? Is that allowed in most places?

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, I film with my action camera on a gorilla pod with a small mic attached. It is much more obvious than a camera phone on a selfie stick. I have noticed that it really does depend on the mood of security at the site you are entering. I usually do not have any issues bringing my filming equipment into ancient sites, but I sometimes do (like at the Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria, or the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa in Alexandria-they made me leave my action camera at security, and I picked it up when I was exiting. The main reason they did that was the mic, I think. It looks a lot more official than a simple phone a tourist would have on a stick). You shouldn't have any issues with a phone though, everyone has that and I've never seen anyone having issues with it. My suggestion is to just put everything away in your bag until you have passed through security though, and once you are a good distance away from the security checkpoint, then take it out. Never walk in filming, as that will bring attention to you (and police do not want to be filmed) and may cause them to give you a problem with your equipment, whereas they would probably not say or do anything if it was just in your bag when you first enter. Egypt is full of ancient wonders and millions of people visit Egypt every year, and of course they are bringing their cameras and phones to take photos of all the history. It is fine and allowed, but like I said, it can depend on the mood of security, so to make it easier on yourself, wait to start putting it all together and filming until you have passed through security and are within the ancient site.

      @@chateauBoudreau Yeah the prices I was giving are in the Egyptian Pound (called "ginay" here). But the prices have been raised since I made this video. Now the general ticket costs 540 EGP ($17.47). The ticket to get inside the Khufu pyramid is more, I think like an additional 900 EGP or something like that. Also, you can't pay with cash anymore, you need to pay with a card for the ticket. There are all recent changes. I talk about that briefly in this more recent video: th-cam.com/video/Il6pZFgyl_I/w-d-xo.html

      @@marcinko5861 Alright, well good luck! If I hear of anything I'll message you and let you know. But I don't think it's very popular here to rent vehicles, that may be why you aren't finding a lot about it online. People living here either take local transportation or purchase their own vehicle. And tourists/foreigners visiting usually never want to drive here

    I see some dogs around the pyramids. Are they dangerous?Around how many km you should walk to see all attractions? We are with 2 children.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  หลายเดือนก่อน

      No the dogs aren't dangerous, they keep to themselves. How many km? I'm not sure, I suppose it depends on everything you want to see and do there. It also depends on the ages of your children, and the time of year you visit. I just went to film there yesterday and it was 42 degrees, I wanted to collapse after only an hour or 2 🤣 But there are articles that can tell you how many km it is. The pyramids are located next to each other, several hundred meters apart. The "pyramids view" is much further and people usually ride camels out there if they want to go for the panorama view point. It's a big area

    If only those who "built" it were not a part of it. There's the Sphinx. 2:02 and there's the dog that is behind you. 2:33 $20 for the entrance or do the $18.20 so as to scale back. Oh to bring "it" with you. Yes bring all that is need for "it". I would just want to see it but "respect" can go far then while visiting it. I say really look into it. I wonder if the "government" posters are in fact real. They make their living.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Uh, what is this comment even? It doesn't make any sense to me, almost seems like senseless babble 😆
      In regards to prices, because I do understand that bit of your comment: When I made this video the exchange rate was 240 EGP = $9.70 USD. With inflation and other factors, 240 EGP is now $7.77 USD. Prices of things with inflation mean prices have gone up since I first arrived here 1.5 years ago. The Egyptian pound has also lost value since I first arrived. When I first came to Egypt $1 USD was 15 EGP. Now $1 USD is 30.90 EGP. Rates fluctuate but it lost a lot of value after the war with Russia began.
      As I made clear in the video, I doubt the poster is real or posted by the government, so you are repeating what I already pointed out in the video. The price for a one hour camel ride is 200 EGP for Egyptians. That is what one should be paying, not 600, or 1,000, or whatever else people will try to charge a foreigner (I have heard of people paying $100 USD for a camel ride 😆). If a foreigner wants or is willing to pay more, that is fine, that is their choice. I would suggest tipping well if you want to pay more, but pay the rate that Egyptians are paying, because that is what is fair here. Just as in India, one must be aware of scams and getting overcharged here. If you have watched videos about Egypt from various travelers you will know what I am talking about. Good day to you!

    The only thing is if you don't want anything, you can say thank you and walk away. No one will stop you. You talk about a lot of things and it was very useful. But I also like Egypt. This is what happens to me when I visit the pyramids. The easiest thing is to say thank you and walk.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are mistaken about that. I have been to the pyramids many times (I live a half hour away from them) and have personally experienced their persistence on many occasions. Not all the vendors will hassle you, but many of them do and do not take no for an answer. You have to say no several times before they give up. It's on videos all over the internet though, I am sure you can see. And as I have been down there 5 or 6 times, I can also say it's not ALWAYS the case. Sometimes I have been barely spoken to. It depends on the day, time of year, time of the day you go, and many other factors.

    Do we need a guide?

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      I might not be the best person to ask that as I almost never hire guides and don't particularly like guided tours, just because I prefer to walk around on my own and usually I feel like guided tours are a bit rushed (also I don't remember all the information as it is so much 😅). So my answer is no, you don't need a guide. In my opinion there are two benefits from hiring a guide. One: the historical information, and so you know what you're looking at. Two: They probably keep all (or most) of the vendors down there away from you so you aren't hassled so much. That's what I hear anyway. But you don't need a guide. I like to walk around a listen to some good music that fits the scene and spend as much time in each place as I want. But it comes down to personal preference.

For people that are well traveled, just walk in, ignore (or engage and barter), and enjoy. People that have traveled a lot (especially to developing countries) already know how to deal with this so they don't need this video
