Took me a minute and scrolling through comments to get this to work, I was also trying to extend the top but ended up doing top and sides to keep original dimensions for the most part. You need to tell people to unlock their background layer and make sure they are in an 8 bit RGB channel- won't get option for Content-Aware Scale if not. Worked great for me! Btw, I have the newest PS version but everyone should have these basic tools and options.
Which version of photoshop did you use in achieving this because my 2019cc Adobe Photoshop can't achieve it. Firstly it doesn't crop only the left hand side and the right hand side. But it crops the four angles .. So I would like to know which of the versions you used. Thank you

Tried several times, doesn't work. Almost works as I said some of the subject seems protected and does not stretch with the background, but I cannot understand why only some of the selected and protected background stays and some of it stretches.

If you don't have the tool in your Photoshop's version you can use the Quick Selection Tool or the Pen Tool.

Yes it's a grat tool. Try to use the Crop Tool. While resizing hold Alt.
Make sure you have your layer selected before trying to content aware scale the image.

There is actually an easier way - when cropping, just select "Content Aware Fill" and it does everything automatically.
