Anton Bruckner (4 September 1824 - 11 October 1896) was an Austrian composer known for his symphonies, masses, and motets. The first are considered emblematic of the final stage of Austro-German Romanticism because of their rich harmonic language, strongly polyphonic character, and considerable length. Bruckner's compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing to their dissonances, unprepared modulations, and roving harmonies.

    1. Bruckner composed the motet, also known as Ave Maria II, in 1861. He did this after completing five years of studies with Simon Sechter. The motet was first performed on 12 May 1861 as Offertorium of a mass in the Linz Cathedral (now the Old Cathedral). Bruckner was their organist and was also from 1860 director of the Liedertafel (choral society) "Frohsinn" who performed the motet to celebrate the anniversary of its founding. Bruckner wrote in a letter about the reception in a letter dated 3 October 1861: "I was, in the end, splendidly applauded by my choir-twice."
    2. Afferentur regi is the second of the two "great motets" during a "fruitful though brief" period of Bruckner's compositional career following Sechter's tuition, the other motet being the Ave Maria WAB 6. Afferentur regi was premiered in St. Florian Abbey on the feast day of Saint Lucy, 13 December 1861.
    3. Bruckner composed the motet in c. 1835 when, as eleven-year-old boy, he was studying by Johann Baptist Weiß in Hörsching. It is not known whether it was performed at that time. In 1891, towards the end of his life, Bruckner "restored" this beloved very first composition.
    4. Bruckner composed this gradual on 18 July 1879 and dedicated it to Ignaz Traumihler, choirmaster of St. Florian Abbey.
When Traumihler saw the manuscript, he asked: "Ist's der ganze Text?" (Is this the whole text?) Therefore, Bruckner added on 28 July 1879 a verse Inveni David in a Gregorian mode followed by a repeat of the Alleluja.
While the first performance was expected on Traumihler's name-day (31 July 1879), it finally occurred four weeks later on 28 August 1879 on the feast of Saint Augustinus. Traumihler conducted while Bruckner played the organ.
    5. Bruckner composed this motet, which uses the gradual of Maundy Thursday, on 25 May 1884. The piece was performed six months later, on 9 November, in the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle. Bruckner dedicated the work to Oddo Loidol, one of his students.

Thanks so much. These little choral gems tend to get overlooked by his enormous symphonies..

Der intelligente und erfahrene Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Vokalensemble im gut betrachteten Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Wundervoll und tiefempfunden zugleich!

The selection of Creed and Pančík for these five motets is an excellent choice. Creed would also be an excellent choice for an upload of the second version of the Mass in E minor.

Just a question, do you have a bruckner mass no.3 score video uploaded? If you do it must be an unavailable video in my region.

can't stand poor pronunciation, it's obEdiens not obidiens or obeediens), Dèus not Dius or Deeus...

    • @bartjebartmans
      @bartjebartmans  ปีที่แล้ว +12

It is not poor pronunciation. Every country has it's own use of Latin diphthongs. What is permissible in one is impermissible in another. The one you object to is German Latin. Check the ones who sing Kyrie as Kuhrihe for instance. Not wrong just their way.

this entire video of incredibly sung and incredibly written music and you're focusing on one vowel in a language you don't even speak?

    • @SilSie

In addition to what @bartjebartmans wrote: since Bruckner was Austrian it is quite likely that he didn't use any italian pronounciation but the German one.

Locus Iste is unequivocally in the public domain (published in 1866), so long as you use the original (no updated arrangements).

It is the performance which was blocked, not the sheet music.
