Hellebores are classic and I love them too. Very sweet to see your spaniels out and about in your garden, I have two Cavaliers and they love to spend time with me outdoors all year round. I never thought of cutting them and bringing them in to put in vases. I have about 5 varieties and they are great performers. I'm looking for Frost Kiss this year in my garden center.

One thing you might think about, is to try them in different locations, especially if you think your soil might be a bit, "heavy"! I had transplanted mine in my landscaping and the only thing I question is, because of the size they've achieved, do I take my shovel to cut them in half, making size appropriate? They've truly gotten too large for the areas. Thank you David, and please reply.
Gina, thanks watching and your continued support. It would be good to divide your larger Hellebore clumps, that will keep them vigorous, growing healthy and flowering well. As you mention, you can do this with the point of a spade, transplanting larger pieces as whole new clumps. During the the first year they might come up a bit thin and sparse looking, but they'll soon recover and in subsequent years be strong, vigorous and productive. These Frostkiss® ones are really something - so good luck with enjoying them.
They’ve become sooo expensive, however…I Love them…and there are a few that are zone 4! But wouldn’t it be better to wait to prune when you know the possibility of snow has passed? (Like Mar/Apr)? And protect the new growth?
Thanks for watching and sending us your note. These cultivars have to be vegetatively propagated, which is a specialized process and in the nursery, the young plants are not the easiest to produce, which makes them a bit more expensive, but as you've probably noted in David's garden, it is an investment that pays off handsomely especially when you consider the value they will bring over many years. Over the years David has not seen much damage to the young growth if it is snipped away during mild winter periods, but if you are concerned and want to leave it a bit later then of course there's no reason why you couldn't wait until later or even not do it at all! David says that getting a few jobs done during mild spells, gives him a reason to get outside and shake off being couped up for the winter and get a "jump" on the hectic spring period.
