I'm glad this video was made as it gives us a visual to what it looked like and where the places described were in distance. I was hoping it was longer or a sequel made to this.
This is just a tiny glimpse. It's a crazy small but bustling city of narrow roads. Lots of spiritual types around. Yoga classes advertised everywhere. Big religious ceremonies along the Ganga River every night. The Beatles were up on the hill on the other side in a quiet part.
Brilliant illumination. The sparse conditions must have been a huge culture shock back in 1968. Amenities such as toilets and showers were unheard of in most of India back then. So now we can see where John went to secretly collect the mail he was receiving everyday from the determined gold-digger Yoko. Cynthia, the good soul that she was, was indeed blind. She thought John's growing relationship with Yoko was a mere joke. It was, but a very sick one. The end was nearing...
Thank you very much for this video. I was there in late summer of 2017. The scale of the ashram impressed me. It's hard to imagine how it was at its peak. It was so strange seeing how everything has been abandoned. I wonder what led to it all falling apart. It's kind of cool though that it hasn't been commercialized. I was hoping to find a gift store, but obviously there wasn't one. Maybe it's kind of good to keep it as it is. I briefly stayed at the Swami Dayananda Saraswati ashram across the river, and was in town for that, so the Beatles thing was just a total bonus.
Ah, just a super job man ! Thanks for sharing. Love the way you superimposed the Beatles photos over the original locations. Also, perfect choice of music. Even a few photos this old Beatles fan hadn't seen before. ! Maybe an abandoned ruin now, but the views, the Ganges, birds, shrubs and trees, would still be pretty much the same.
It's amazing to me that no-one has thought or tried to renovate and restore the ashram to its former glory and then open it as the Beatles meditation retreat, to make a buck.
The ashram was completely looted by the people of nearby villages. They took away furnishings and even tore out windows and doors. Then humidity, disrespect and overrun by the jungle are responsible for the decay of buildings. When I visited the Ashram in october 2023 I noticed that most people were there only to adore the Maharishi and not the Beatles.
Rishikesh se encuentra en el norte de la India, por lo que, especialmente en invierno, hace un poco menos de calor que el resto del país. Saludos desde Italia

I worked as an assistant to their publicist at the time. This was all a put on for the media and the fans. It was all about selling their image and making them more money. Had absolutely nothing to do with their search for spiritual enlightenment etc.
This was really moving. Life goes by so quickly. They were all so young and full of joy and expectations, and now it is all covered in weeds.
