How to make an Axe Handle || DIY new handle for my granfather's hatchet (only hand tools)

- Hi there!
In this video I'm replacing the handle to a one hundred years old axe (or probably more correctly an hatchet). Using only common hand tools!
The Idea is make a more versatile handle for a medium axe. I got inspiration from many sites and books but at the end I draw my own sketch.
A well known (and accepted) rule say that the length of the handle must be the weight in lbs times ten. In my opinion this rule can be taken as a good approximation to get a general idea.
This axe head weight 840 g ( approximately 1.86 lbs) so the suggested length should be 18.7 inches ( approximately 46cm). But I decide to make a 42cm (approximately 16.5 inches) to fit better my preferences.
Sure anyone can find the length that fits better his/her own application, harm strength, type of blade... etc..
This handle is made out of a piece of beech wood. Here in Italy beech wood is very common for this kind of application. I like a lot its capacity to absorb the shock and preserve the handle, wrist and elbow.
I tried to think like my grandfather: a well done project with a few simple tools!

❤ beautiful video
Nice work!
Thanks!
Beautiful. ✊🍷🎩
Spettacolare...ascia super e manico all'altezza.
Grazie mille! Questa accetta ha un valore sentimentale per me, quindi ho deciso di non fargli nulla che potesse togliere quella patina di "utilizzo vero" con cui l'ho ereditata.
Awesome
Thanks!
Hi there! This axe has been forged almost 100 years ago in a small village called "Badia" in the mountains of my home region. If you are interested in handles check out this video on knife handle th-cam.com/video/Che3bN8KMXU/w-d-xo.html
In what country is the region of Badia?
@@franzparapapunz the region is Umbria, in Italy. Badia was a small farmers village in the northern part of Umbria.
Beautifull! (does anybody know the name of the second song, sounds amazing)
Thanks! The song is: Shifting Sand - Deskant.
@@servicetreeIT Thanx!

Just got a hold of some old barn lumber, it just so happens that my grandfather's axe needs a new handle. Using the existing handle as a template. Similar in shape with your handle. I have the same tools and really appreciate your video, it was great to watch and very helpful!
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoy it!
Beautiful
Thanks!
Very cool...
Thanks! I can say now after few months: it also works pretty good. Any how the next one I believe I'd like to shape in a slightly different way...
