My headcanon is that that was the first, last, and *only* time that mustache ever saw the light of day, and that Mustang and Hawkeye's serious faces in the photo are because they are, respectively, sincerely regretting ignoring Hawkeye's advice not to do it, and sincerely regretting not just shaving it off while he slept like she planned to.
And yes, this headcanon also holds that Ed's awareness of all of that is *why* it's the album photo for Mustang. Because reminding the Colonel of that day and reveling in his cringe is *absolutely* something Ed would do.

Now that all of the homunculi are dead, you can look back and see that all of them died/ended in kind of an ironic way:
Lust died to the hands of someone called a womanizer

    Sloth died from over-exhaustion

Something to know about Truth AKA God AKA Ghosty boi is that he seems to really, truly hate human transmutation and more importantly humans trying to bend the world to their whims. You can see that in how he treated Father at the very end, remarking how he had learned nothing. So when Elric, after initially trying to subvert the laws of nature and bring his mom back, chooses to sacrifice his alchemy and his gate of truth and then remarking that he doesn't need alchemy (i.e. the power to change the world as he want) when he has the people around him then Truth gets excited because *finally* someone figured out what he wanted all this time. Someone finally learned that they didn't need to try and play God, something Father never learned.

    • @pastelmusic409
      @pastelmusic409 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

"He" isn't a guy and doesn't hate. The Truth is basically an otherworldly being that consists of all life, it's not going to care alchemy is used since alchemy is just as natural as anything else. Deconstruction and reconstruction isn't playing god or bending the world to their whims, it's no different to killing an animal and eating it. This is covered when ed and al are surviving on the island. It's only when it takes a step too far that it's no longer natural, like reviving the dead. The Truth is basically there to prevent the laws of nature from being messed with by things like that. The Truth isn't happy Ed is abandoning alchemy, it's happy that Ed learned the lesson he was set on the path to learn when he first saw the truth.

Like so long as you understand that power is less important than the people around you, he's just totally chill. Like both Ed and Father's ultimate endings just feels fair. Ed got his arm and brother back in exchange for the power Ed used to try and violate the laws of nature whereas Father was returned to nothing for failing to do the same and refusing to see the error of his ways.

    Some observations:
As Ed sacrifices his alchemy and Truth disappears, Truth sounds like Ed.
Something I realized was that Amestris is the name of Xerxes' wife, which emphasizes the two nations' connection.
Father wore the King of Xerxes' robes all throughout.
And the Homunculi all died in ironic ways. The first Greed was stripped of his possessions and melted by gold. Lust was killed by Mustang, who only had eyes for Hawkeye. Gluttony was eaten. Sloth was exhausted. Envy was pitied and humiliated by the humans it was jealous of and couldn't take it, so killed themself. Wrath was at peace. Pride was humbled. And our Greed died in a selfless act and was content...

One thing about Ed refusing to use the Stone to bring Al back that I really like is that in a lot of shows ignoring people's wishes to help them is seen as a sign of love, while in FMAB love means respecting people's desires even if you disagree with them. You see something similar with Roy and Riza: when she tells him that she doesn't want him performing human transmutation to help her he accedes. If it were up to Ed, I think he would have used the Stone, but he recognizes that it's not his decision to make.

Okay so, one of the interpretations of Greed, both the original and greedling, is the greed displayed is actually desiring the ability to protect others he cares about. His ability only allows him to protect himself.
Additionally, I highly recommend reading the light novels. They are more like side stories but they do a lovely job at exploring the world and just are fun laughs. Personally my favorite is The Abducted Alchemist because that one is pure laughs but Under The Farway Sky has a wonderful story about Mustang, Armstrong, and Hughes. I haven’t read The Ties That Bind yet but apparently it’s a heartbreaking story that shows another side of the impacts of the Ishballan extermination.

I actually do find Father's final scene cathartic. He desperately sought knowledge and power for the sake of being above everyone else, to not be a little dwarf who was powerless under the ignorant humans he envied and despised, and who relied on the sacrifices and pain of others.
so not only does he face the same trial as his sacrifices (meeting Truth) but he starts begging and screaming once he gets dragged in. Not for forgiveness, oh no, that would require him to do the thing he's beeing punished for not doing, but instead he begs to at least be told WHY he's being treated so poorly, where he went wrong. but the fact he can't even FATHOM what he did wrong is precisely why truth is punshing him worse than the others: he was so arrogant he beleived he was above EVERYTHING and willfully did as he pleased thinking there'd be no consequence to his actions. Truth punnishes the arrogant, and actively mocks them, but he HATES the haughty like Father, at least that's how it seems.
Also while it may seem odd truth is suddenly ncie to Edward that's cause before he was punishing ed's 'arrogance' of thinking he could jsut bring back his mum without any consequence. He's harsh and mean but he's not evil. When Edward meets him again he's actually being so humble he's actively removing his ability to do alchemy ever again, which pleases Truth. (also at the end of Truth's speech to Ed he starts being voiced by Edward's actor, because Truth is ALSO Edward and thus a reflection of him because Truth reflects everyone to faces him)

Truths punishments are VERY exacting.... the 'dwarf in the flask: Homunculous' wanted EVERYTHING, to know everything, to be everything, to rule everything... and so Truth returned it to NOTHING...
its very poetic, and as you said instead of learning from its failings and atrocity it demanded to know more... its honestly kind of sad and pathetic how the slave that would be von hoenhiem was infinitely more than the 'powerful' being in the flask... the little thing was ONLY the sins and lacked anything to be human

FMAB truly is a masterpiece; a work of art. I doubt this was intentional, but it's kind of beautiful how at the end of his life, Hoenheim is so proud of his sons. They are his complete pride and joy. A perfect reflection of Father casting aside his "Pride" to create his first child as a young boy named Selim. The story comes full circle, like the symbol of the homunculi the ouroboros, the serpent swallowing it's own tail. The symbol for the complete infinite cycle; all is one, and one is all.

To even expand on what you're saying, there's a pride in their idea of justice/doing what's right that is somehow both innocent and seditious, which I think makes a lot of sense for why Pride is a child. Pride can be molded for good n the same way that children can be molded, but in the wrong circumstances, your pride can start to overshadow proper restraint and judgment

Out of all of the reactions to Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood that I've seen, yours have been the most engaging and entertaining. I love how it's not just a reaction but very colorful commentary that I just don't normally see. It actually makes me excited and immediately click on new episodes. Gonna miss this reaction series, but I'll continue to enjoy your content.
Also, you're probably going to hear this a dozen times, but yeah there's an animated blooper reel that just compliments the show well and is highly recommended. I look forward to that!

A really interesting thing is how each of the homunculus died.
-Lust was destroyed by an (apparent) womanizer
    -Gluttony was eaten
-Envy killed himself out of spite
-Pride was beaten by a humble human
-Wrath was beaten by a man who had been consumed by wrath
-Sloth was worn out from a long fight
-Greed died selflessly for someone else
    beaten by their own antithesis

I also wanna point out how great Fathers death is, in a sense it mirrors the Homunculus tattoo with the Ouroboros. The ouroboros is a mythical snake known to always be eating itself/it's tail, so having father be consumed/drawn into himself is pretty cool :D
Edit: And Truth's voice overlaying with Ed's voice at the end is CHILLING I love it!

Grumman becoming Fuhrer instead of Mustang was foreshadowed in their earlier chess match when Grumman told Roy "You were fine until you were certain you'd won, then you got sloppy" (quoting from memory, I might have the wording a bit wrong). This is similar, Roy thought he'd won and become Fuhrer but Grumman swooped in and took the position from him at the last minute.

7:03 i read a PHENOMENAL analysis of this moment a while back, about how Ed's guilt and self hatred and issue blaming himself was tangled up in his anger at their dad for abandoning them from the beginning, torn between hating that the man wasnt there to stop them and feeling too responsible to not acknowledge that it was still their choice (his choice) that caused all this.
And their first reunion, Hoenheim really cuts Ed deep by being angry at him for what they did, striking the nerve at the centre of that mess of issues...but here, in the finale and with Alphonse life on the line, he tells his eldest son that he should have been there for them and that NOT ALL THE RESPONSIBILITY IS ON ED. Some part of Ed has been waiting to hear that (and believe they mean it) since that horrific night and it happens in the goddamn finale as a goodbye as they both accept that theyre family through and through, leading to both their happy endings
It is also, apparently, the only time we see Ed cry, because he's finally got permission to not be 100% responsible and forcing himself to stay strong

Fun facts: 1) Many episodes ago, Edward was the one suggesting to find Marcoh, "a doctor with a philosopher stone" in order to heal Havoc (but it turned out he had beed kidnapped). And IIRC he already knew they were made out of human souls.
    2) At the end of the manga (chapter 110) healing Havoc with the stone isn't expressly mentioned. However, in his final photo there, he's seen doing hard physical rehab.
    3) Another difference in the manga final photos (apart from the lack of mustache for Roy) is that Paninya and Garfiel have their own photo, they are not in the same one with the protagonists. So, the possibility that Ed and Winry might have moved to Rush Valley (after Pinako's death maybe?) has been hinted only in the anime (and it's still totally possible they were all together just for a visit, of course).

The scene of Ed sacrificing his doorway recontextualizes everything concerning The Truth. Originally you think of the Truth as being some otherworldy arbitrator, a being that oversees the natural laws of the universe and whom harshly and cruely punishes those who overstep into the realm of God. But with The Truth's final scene, we see instead that it was never just about the punishment, it was about the lesson that came along with it. The Truth was trying to teach them that Godliness isn't what will bring you happiness or joy, but rather finding your happiness through human connection. A good life isn't a powerful or glorious one, but one that is spent with those you love and care for. That to accept their lives, struggles and hardships included, and by growing from them and appreciating what they have is the path towards true enlightenment. And it was never using the power of God (alchemy) that was the issue, it was abusing them in order to play God to eschew the natural laws that exist for a reason. This is why The Truth is ecstatic when Edward figures it out and 'beats him', because someone has finally understood the lesson and came out victorious. Truth WANTS people to beat him so that they might come out of their hardships a better person. This lesson is a harsh and brutal one, but in the end necessary for their growth if they have the strength to persevere.
