First missionary that came to S Korea in 1800's was killed, I know his name was Robert Jermain. Thank God he broke every law and common sense to give his life for the people of Korea. Though he died, we Koreans are thankful he gave his life for the truth.

hearing this discussion, and having a good grasp of religion as one who was brought up under it, makes me even more convinced than I already was that people like Chau and anyone aligned with his beliefs should never, EVER be allowed to set foot near any low contact/uncontacted tribe ever again.

Well said. This, braking the laws and risking a death, even genocide for religious reasons and ambition, is what we call terrorism as soon as an extreme muslim does the same.

The criticism coming from "Christians" is proof of how far we've drifted from true NT followers of Christ, to this westernized version. This didn't happen overnight, this has been centuries in the making. This brothers story should challenge all of us to want to be all in for our King Yeshua (Jesus).

Thank you two for sorting this out for us. I didn't know how to proceas this when this event occured. Didn't know about how sane John was. That he wasn't driven by a foolish blind passion. Or someone who had psychological issues.
What Todd said resonates very powerfully here is that, he was fufilling the geeat commission. One day people from every language, tribe & tongue will be standing before that great throne of God to worshio Him forever & ever. And what a way to go. Wow! John was God's secret agent of love. Most of us should be making a beeline to the Sentinel Isands, but alas! So few have succeeded. John is a great success. Can't say if he is dead or alive for sure, but what a response. I wish we all were like him.

"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience." Romans 13:1-5 (NIV)
John Chau broke the law when he went to North Sentinel Island, which means he rebelled against Yahweh's authority, which (in turn) means he sinned against Yahweh. If you believe in the Christian Afterlife, and if he never apologized for his actions ... means his ass is going straight to Hell, I guess.

The more I've learned about him, the more I admire his commitment. It was a disgrace the way this story was covered in the media and even among Christians. It was made out to sound like he was a reckless, irresponsible person who went over there on his own, with no training whatsoever. That never sounded right to me. What would you do? What makes your religion so great that you must force it on to other people. John kept offering these people gifts of fish as if they can’t fish and feed themselves. They have inhabited the island for 60,000 years. They can survive without your religion or gifts. They have good reason to be hostile and not want any outsiders. Stories have been passed on to them for thousands of years since leaving Africa. John trying to build a church on their island is no different than colonialism. Leave the people alone. Did his Mission Trip make any difference in saving the lives of the North Sentinelese? If anything, his trip likely made them even more apprehensive to outsiders. Doesn't sound like a success to me.
At no point did John Chau recognize the awful history of Colonization had brought to this area, especially by the British in the 19th Century (who kidnapped, tortured and brought diseases to these island communities). John waded into a situation (and broke Indian Law, which is sinful to God (Romans 13:1-7)) he was ill-prepared for. John Chau has no reason to be celebrated, but the Commenters here are too blind and deaf to see their own hypocrisy.

Now it is on the map, people are thinking about it, praying about it, wanting to come up with ideas about how to reach them for Christ. Also many people learned about the story and were inspired to become missionaries themselves in the same way that Jim Eliot did a few generations ago. I would say his death was not a failure.

      1. I already knew about it before John Chau ever went there. I tend to believe a lot of people already knew about it.
      2. If more missionaries are really thinking about sacrificing themselves to a group of people that have made it clear "We don't want visitors" ... that's really stupid. Do you have ANY idea how much time and effort it took Madhumala Chattopadhyay to make peaceful contact with these people (and no, she wasn't a missionary)? Anthropologists like her have made a FAR bigger difference to making contact with these people; she also never needed to throw her life away either in order to do so.
      3. You really think this young man sacrificing his life to a group of people who, again, expressed no interest in being contacted convinced people to become missionaries? That's really sad if that's true.
And instead of taking the time to learn about these people and make slow contact (like anthropologists such as Madhumala), he threw his life away. I like how you also ignored the fact that John Chau broke God's Order to follow the Law of the Land. I can't imagine your God was happy with that. I like to think God asks this of his followers because of idiotic people like John (sorry, but idiocy is what comes to mind with what this young man did).
Do you really think God is calling people to come to this island? Why not let God make contact? He's All-Knowing and All-Loving. If he cares about these islanders' eternal fate, then he would have either contacted them himself already OR he will and has been lenient upon their deaths. And if you don't believe God is this merciful, and it is strictly up to foreigners (who have already been tortured and diseased by foreigners in the past, giving them good reason to be distrustful), then I don't think you have any room to believe that your God is as All-Loving and merciful as The Bible claims him to be. It also shows that you have no trust in your God either to take some action here, which doesn't seem like something a true Follower of Christ would believe.

@@names_are_useless This is an issue of world-views, in which obviously you do not believe in God, so it will be considered foolishness to you. However, as an unbeliever, the Bible calls you foolish. God often uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise.
You may have been well aware of the islands, however a vast majority of people on earth had no clue about it until this event. You should acknowledge as much that awareness has increased.
In the same way Jim Eliot made contact and was killed initially, awareness was later raised which led to people's in the Amazon connecting with the rest of the world. They now have electricity, medical care, education, greater life-expectancy. People like you are very proud and would limit these people. However if you were honest and it was you, you would want to live in the modern world and not like a cave-man.
God has made contact with these people at some point in their past. He has made contact with all of our ancestors. All our ancestors originally chose to either accept him or reject him. I imagine their ancestors rejected God, however for whatever reason now is the time that inroads are being made. In your foolishness you limit God while not even believing in God. So sad.

When it comes to spreading the gospel on this island I feel that an idea would be to find out the language of that island and record the entire gospel onto a device where you only have to press a button to hit play, this way they hear their own language when it's played and they can hear the gospel in the language they understand. I mean a device that is simple , one button press one button stop. Literally fly over the island and drop them onto the island and they are bound to figure it out. If you can figure out their language you can put the reason why the recording is playing and then introduce the gospel to them. Without anyone putting their life in danger or being killed or hurt or putting their lives in danger because they are prone to catch diseases from us because they have zero contact with the outside world and we could be carrying and not even knowing it because we have such immunity to the diseases of this world that when we think we're well we are actually sick to them. And it might be why they don't allow anyone into the community. My prayers go out to John for what he did and why he did it and he truly is an inspiration to us all and he lived out the gospel and true faith and I believe he should be honored as such.❤

Missions and missionaries should be highly illegal. Imagine Sentinel Island being your house. And someone repeatedly keeps trespassing despite making it clear they are not welcome. John is not a martyr, what he did is a superior complex that he seemed to have. What makes their home Satan’s last stronghold?

@@darioevans8167 I understand if you want to get people to opportunity to meet their maker and have everlasting a lot because that is a reality that you have experienced. But I do not believe on forcing your religion on anyone. That is bad manners. But like I said just recorded in their language on a press play drop it off and if they don't want nothing to do with it that's on them and if they do then awesome. Otherwise leave them alone if they want to be left alone. When I want to be left alone I don't want anyone throwing their religion on me. There is an afterlife though and everyone has the right to know about it. And everyone has the right to deny it and reject it as well. That's clearly their prerogative is to reject it so. Thank you for this, VOM and Dr. Arlund. I've been seeing posts about John and have read the VOM Magazine about him, but this triggered my memory. I now remember the backlash following John's death. Christians said he was irresponsible and Media outlets blamed Christians for trying to Westernize the world. That's what they said, but this is what the word of God says:
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. - Revelation 6:9-11.
This also deepened my desire to be fully used of God no matter what the cost.

I too remember this heart braking story...I recall offering an opinion that differed with most and by doing so incurred the wrath of some Christians. What I said at the time is, this young man had a zeal but perhaps it wasn't coupled with wisdom. The command to “shake the dust off your feet” is found four times in the NT. In each case the command is spoken by Jesus to His disciples when He sent them out two by two (Matthew 10:14; Luke 9:5). In Mark 6:11 Jesus says, “And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” Shaking the dust off the feet is symbolic that one has done all that can be done in a situation and therefore carries no further responsibility for it. In the scriptural examples, Jesus was telling His disciples that they were to preach the gospel to everyone where they were received.
Apparently, John Chau had attempted to make contact on a previous occasion and was met with arrows being shot at him. That time he was able to escape. He wasn't as fortunate the second time.

They don’t need to hear about your faith, you are only projecting your way of living onto others. And why would he have taken a weapon with him if his actions were good, if you even have the thought of it, that clearly means you wish to impose something onto other people. I don’t know. I think that we should go into the world and spread the gospel, but there is such a thing as waiting until an opportunity opens up. There’s a reason that God waited until the eastern Roman Empire spoke Greek as a lingua franca to send Jesus and then establish the church to help the spread of the NT. Evangelisation efforts should be done in tangent or with aid from experts so it’s done with the wisdom of serpents (to quote Jesus). If an area is off limits without any knowledge of the language, leave it until the language is translated, and go somewhere else where you can spread the gospel, and hope that God opens the door in the future, go either you or someone else. Become an expert in linguistics and decipher/translate languages, there are still about 1 billion people without a Bible in their language.
I’m sure that we will meet John in Heaven, but I think that his is a story of what happens if you approach zeal without wisdom. There is a wisdom that Jesus said to be as harmless as doves but wise as serpents. Presumption is dangerous, especially if you’re presuming upon God to protect you from your carelessness.

This is the problem with a lot of Christian Evangelists I've spoken to: no actual long term thinking, and no actual care for the individuals you're looking to convert. They aren't considering how their contact with people outside their culture could in fact damage their perceptions of Christianity. Have you considered the generations of their own beliefs and customs? How would you feel if someone tried converting you to their religion without a single care to your raising in Christianity?

John Chau has no reason to be celebrated:
    1. He broke Indian Law by visiting the island, which disobeys God (Romans 13:1-7)
    2. John Chau judges the North Sentinelese as "Satan's Last Stronghold" (his words). The Bible is clear that God should be the judge, and that you're not supposed to condemn others (Luke 6:37, Matthew 7:1-5, James 4:12, etc)
I'm not even a Christian (Ex-Christian), and I can plainly see his intentions were selfish. At no point did he consider that the North Sentinelese could plead their own cases before his god when they died. At no point did he consider the idea that his god could have already presented himself to them. If his god is truly all-loving, he should understand that when these people die, whether they have or have not heard about his god, his god would judge them mercifully (and if not, then that makes his god into a massive prick).
No, John here, HE had to be their Savior. And if he didn't, HE was going to at least die a Martyr in the eyes of his god. This man deserves no celebration, but instead should be a cautionary tale.

    • @names_are_useless
      @names_are_useless ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jadedrac0 You didn't even bother reading the Romans verses I mentioned, did you?
Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor." - Romans 13:1-7 (NIV)
(I suppose Romans 13:6-7 weren't necessary to mention for this instance, but I love to reference it to American Conservatives who seem to have this idea that "Taxes are Evil" when Yahweh tells you that, effectively, he's responsible for them)
Anyways, let me take the key sentences from Romans 13:1-5 that prove my case:
      1. "The authorities that exist have been established by God." Yahweh has established ALL Human Authorities. Does that not mean the Indian Government has the right to North Sentinel Island since Yahweh established them as authorities of it?
      2. "Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." Rebelling against Human Authority is rebelling against Yahweh (and all rebellion against Yahweh is sin, right?). And apparently, according to your Bible, he would have judged John Chau for his actions once he died.
      3. "Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended." Follow all authority, including Human Authority. That means whatever laws the Indian Government has setup for North Sentinel Island.
      4. "For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good." ALL Human Authorities are in place for your own good (including the Indian Government, apparently) according to Yahweh. Consequently, there is no room for criticism.
      5. "They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience." Reiterating Points #1, #3 and #4. And don't follow authority just to avoid punishment either, but also to keep your conscience clear (even though it's quite clear everyone has varying degrees on consciences, especially those who have no issue with genocide or mass murder, so this last part just seems completely arbitrary).
My overall point: you can call my logic ridiculous all you want, and I don't blame you: the inability to complain about ANY human authority for ANY reason AT ALL is completely asinine and stupid. However, I didn't write Romans (I'm not even a Christian anymore). Go complain to Romans' author, St. Paul the Apostle. Better yet, go complain to your god since, apparently, he is responsible for all of The Bible: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" - 2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)
(Replace the last word with "ridiculousness", and I can get behind that verse)

He was courageous, but ultimately naive. From his writings, it's clear that he anticipated his death, but carried on regardless. Some people would call him a hero. Others would call him a fool. Still, one of Gods laws is Thou shalt not kill. He was unarmed, and he was brutally killed. Reason ? They probably feared he'd bring them diseases to which they had no immunity from. John was given several warnings, one when a storm delayed the trip, second when a tribe member shot at hjs bible (they did not miss), he went back two more times and that last time they had finally had enough. John could not take a hint, he could not accept their pushback as NO to be respected and honored. He had an inflated savior complex and it got him killed. Why didn't he go to Iran and try convert the Muslims? John was religiously misguided and humanly foolish. These people do not want contact and even those from nearby islands cannot understand them . He wasn't a martyr, and martyr is someone killed because of their faith, not because they were where they shouldn't be... otherwise the indian fishermen killed there were martyrs... This religious claptrap is ridiculous. There are thousands of unreached people John could have spent a lifetime in the USA contacting, that would even understand him and the concepts of faith.....but no, let's be a misguided hero and go where I'm not allowed, without any knowledge of the language, customs, what offends them and what doesn't, or even the right gifts (narielle) and try convert them to Christ? The arrow in the bible was a gracious warning. He didn't die a martyr, he died a fool. He's still in heaven and aware now of his spiritual ignorance/

    Three things in question:
    1. Was it John's ambition or by God's will to go to North Sentinel island to preach?
    2. Luke 22: 36 Jesus instructed his disciples to take a purse and sword to evangelise the gentiles. His instruction to evangelise the Jews, the familiar people was not to take anything, not even a change of clothes.
    3. It's interesting to know how John got the permission to go there. He took his own risk. According to the Indian Government Travel Warning, the North Sentinel Island is the extreme dangerous zone. There was a group led by the Indian archeologist who made the visit and returned safely in 1991. Some Karen tribe Christians tried to evangelise them many years ago, but didn't succeed.
More interestingly, his father, once was a converted believer said John should have been led by the traditional Chinese teaching of Confucianism, not by the manmade religion, Pentecostal Christianism. It's beyond my imagination but John wanted to prove himself for something unmentioned.
I have been to the areas that were considered dangerous to entre for evangelising. I have had a few occasions when the authorities harassed my local connection and myself. I always consulted the experts and local Christians before I went. The sending organisations cannot and will not do anything but to remember him. May God instruct Christians directly. May John Chau's family rest with peace.

If anything m, God protected the people from John Chau and God let them win. The only one that met Jesus that day was John. Most folks would see his plan as a recipe for disaster and his it seemed like his peers enabled his fantasy of being messiah to a people.

This is exactly the mind of colonizers who think that their religion (Christianity) is better and far superior than other people's cultures so they impose it on others to convert. So to me as a Muslim myself, I don't view John as a Marty, rather an idiot who has a superiority complex because he literally called their home "Satan’s last stronghold." 😒😒😒

Admire his guts but what he did was not right . You cannot go to someone's country and enter a prohibited area and expect to live . He even paid the fishermen to take him there knowing the island was prohibited..God said be wise like serpents.

If the apostles had followed your logic, the gospel would have died with Jesus.
They were flogged, stonned etc just to stop preaching to people of their day, but they obeyed God rather than the authorities.

It isn’t the same situation. The apostles didn’t get themselves in silly situations and were martyred when their time was done. It wasn’t premature, and they bore fruit in the converts that they won for the kingdom of God. They wrote letters leaving behind the tenets of the faith.
      Completely different scenario. @@emmanuelluka7598

    1 John 1:7-9 (KJV)
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

What would happen if he introduced a disease like the common cold - a people like the NS Islanbers couid have been wiped out - this TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE AND VERY SELFISH - did these God botheres consider this ? But I suppose that doesn't matter because they would be in heaven TOTALLY CRAZY.
