I've always interpreted this song as an ode to just being a teenager. Experimenting with drugs, some of them pretty hard; having an older guy drive you around all night and getting high because you're bored. Not sure where you're going, being picked up at sunset and dropped off at sunrise. Looking out the window and watching the houses that don't change of a town you grew up in. Seems like she's singing about relatable topics for any girl who grew up in the suburbs.
tBlizzi "im glad that we stopped kissing the tar on the highway" -400 lux, "getting pumped up on the little bite things i bought (but i know they'll never own me)" -tennis court, "take the pill make it too real" -the love club. there are some undertones but what she did in those experiences probably werent that bad. im a lorde stan so dont come for me im not attacking her lol
@@carter4619 I think "kissing the tar on the highway" is more about how there's so much of it left behind on the highway from being driven over so much, which is used to contrast with driving in suburban areas (tree streets/where the houses don't change) The line about bright things being bought in Tennis Court more likely refers to buying luxurious things for herself, since she follows with "but I know they'll never own me" right after which ties in with the overarching theme in the album of rejecting excess opulence. The Love Club line, though, could be referring to that, or could be referring to figuratively taking the pill (like in "taking the blue/red pill")
tBlizzi i think we're close to the same idea, i know about the tennis court thing and i read something about how the 400 lux example is about how she went to something less addicting than tar heroine (if thats what its about but u could be right) the love club example is probably about peer pressure imo.
To me this song is about being lost in the moment with that one person who lights up your world. Doing nothing but being together in the moment, because just them being in your presence is enough, because the bond you share is oh so strong.
Yeah even something so simple like cruising around with your girl can be really romantic. Knowing that she's safe and comfortable around me. Those are my fondest memories.
If anyone wants to know what the "You buy me orange juice" lyric means: Ella's favorite thing to drink is orange juice, and the "you" in the song is her boyfriend (now ex), basically it means he knows her so well that he always buys Ella her favorite drink, orange juice! Also Ella said on her Tumblr: “I meant the literal buying of orange juice, specifically an orange juice dropped into my lap at a gas station one night.” :3 k bai
Right ? Everyone talks about how amazing and talented Billie was at such a young age , but no one talks about Lorde and how she did the same thing and made amazing music while being only 17. I don’t get it ! And don’t get me wrong, because I support and love Billie too! But Lorde came before Billie had even started to become well known, and I think she deserves a lot more credit and recognition 🤷🏻♀️🙌🏻
Just killing time.. she's singing of all of us, those moments in our youth ( and at times when we're older) very astute. Her words are pictures, any small town any city, we relate. She will return, these songs were of her youth, I await for the next chapter
Now now, you know what I mean in that this chapter of her life though not 'sealed', is behind her and yes she will return with her unique insight.Whatever she chooses for her life , a return to music or college etc, I wish her well. Peace

Lorde writes her songs as short stories. Using few words but giving us each a skeleton to build on with our imaginations. Hence why some say drugs etc. What she is talking about is her and her boyfriend in the car
It's interesting how, as a self harmer, this song feels so intimate. 'Now we're wearing long sleeves' and the mentions of veins and pulses and wrists??? They feel like a love song unintended
when she says “I love these roads where the houses don’t change” I instantly think time loop theories (like vivarum ahah) and this whole song could fit, and also makes me think about how 13-17 for me was kinda just a loop. I love the title. And when I found out why she named it this way. 400 lux is the best time and vibe where you can just do whatever you want even if it makes no sense and still enjoy it. Or just do nothing at all and still enjoy it. She's brilliant 👏

This song really speaks to me especially about the part "Now wear long sleeves and the heating comes on you buy me orange juice" That makes a lot of sense and speaks to my heart.
Love the sound Lorde comes up with ...haunting....and the bass tones...get's to me anyways..the lyrics are intelligent and a bit young, little party monsters with intelligence
No exaggeration this is one of the best songs of all time
Agreed. 2 years late but still

If it wasn't for that annoying horn in the background it would be perfect
What about the song country roads by John Denver

Only lorde can sing “you buy me orange juice” and make it the most romantic line in modern history
Idk if it's about being romantic or getting higher
I'm about to graduate college.. and i used to drive around during the empty late nights blasting this song... holy shit i'm gonna cry
It's okay snowflake.
David Hoban what the fuck? Shut up

Easily my fave Lorde song- and the most underrated
This song is 💯% definitely her best song ever. Hell, its one of the best songs ever from anyone
The ending was creeping me out o-o
same lololol
This song really speaks to me especially about the part "Now wear long sleeves and the heating comes on you buy me orange juice" That makes a lot of sense and speaks to my heart.
same
Love the sound Lorde comes up with ...haunting....and the bass tones...get's to me anyways..the lyrics are intelligent and a bit young, little party monsters with intelligence
Its 2022, still listening to this masterpiece thinking about my crush - AND I LIKE YOU!!!!
my forever favorite chill song
The bass on this is perfect! Love this song.
