My grandfather had this exact truck just not in that color, and he drove that truck until his death in 2019. My uncle now has it and the last I heard it had 609,000'ish miles on it. I know the transmission and the engine have been rebuilt but still the original block. The truck has lived in Texas it's entire life, so it is not quite as perfect as this one but still in really great shape.
My grandmother and grandfather used it to tow a small camper literally to every corner of the country when they retired in 2000. I would say easily half of those miles were towing miles so that 5.7L V8 (350 cu inch) has lived up to it's legendary name.
The nostalgia is real. My dad had a ‘93 K1500 with a custom two-tone paint job and custom interior. Most comfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. Put me right to sleep every single time when I was a kid. Great buy.
I built these back in '97 at Pontiac Assembly. Still the best looking truck GMC made IMO.

@@406Steven and the first generation of dodge ram pickup trucks. Dodge did brought out the 2nd generation out earlier than Ford and GM with the rounded body panels.
What I don't understand is why it seems like such a general term. If we're being technical, wouldn't calling something "Old-Body-Style" apply to future generations in the future? Will GMT-800 OR GMT-900 trucks become OBS one day? Or is it a generally accepted term for 90's trucks? (GMT-400, Brick-Nose Fords, and first-gen Rams?

Hoovie, a small suggestion. When you have one of your vehicles up in the air at the Wizard's, you should have him show the Date Codes on the inside of the Tires that you suspect are the originals or just old. I'm sure viewers would be happy to see where the date codes are located on Tires and also how to interpret the 4-digit codes..
Older tyres didn't used to have the specs on the sidewall?

Old tires i drove cars with 30+ year old tires. City driving etc to shows etc. I drove a 1980 gr Fury 40 years old with 40 year old Good Year Bluesteek police tires across Canada 3000 miles....no problem.
@@buddycollins247rong it's on one sidewall. Just depends what side the tire is mounted on the rim where it ends up. Only a directional specific tire will have the date code on one side. Or I guess if there a white wall or white letters
That's a beautiful truck. GM 90s era trucks where the best of its time. Time has proven with these trucks, I still see a lot of these 90s Chevy and GMC trucks on the road today working hard. Very rarely I see Ford and Dodge trucks from this era on the road.
The Fords had the powertrains and chassis to survive, but the interiors and sheet metal were not. The Dodges are even worse.
GMT 400 & GMT 800’s are some of the best pickups ever built. I have a 2005 Cat Eye with only 70K on the odometer and I’ll be keeping it for at least another 20 years. Best pick ups ever! Built like a rock!
I have 1-400 owned since 1997 but the auto 4L, getrag 5 speed sle z71 and it was 2000 canadian in 1997with 85000 miles, currently at 140000 miles, and 2 lbz duramax 800s
Picked up a 2003 Silverado 4.8 for $6200. Only 180K, def can get another 200K out of it

Got a GMT400 one that I got recently. Picked it up at 275k miles but the owner took AMAZING care of it, very little rust for the rust belt, engine burns less oil than some new cars I know of and the interior was also very well kept.

95 and 96 both featured the cup holders on the dash. 97 is the first year. The dashes for both 95-96 are almost the same. 95 had a one piece fold down ash tray and cig lighter, while 96 had little flaps. Super sharp truck! Just sold a 98' with 101k that I got from the OG owner

My family had a 92 and I recall those had a couple cup holders on the inner side of the glovebox lid.I can't recall we ever used those despite owning that truck for about 15 years. I don't think the 95-96 cup holders were any more usable than the 88-94 ones

I had a friend in high school who purchased this truck brand new in 1995, exact same interior and exterior colors, 5.7 V8, automatic. Sticker was about $29,000 he got it for $25k... northern California purchase. It was an awesome truck and I got to drive it a few times when it was brand new, including over the Sierra Nevada mountain range and Lake Tahoe, on vacation. This thing was built in simpler times when trucks were actually trucks. And I personally think this is one of the best GM interiors ever built...for design. Great to see a video of its twin!

I still got my 1993 GMC I bought new. Starting to show its age. My daughter now drives it and loves it! I’ll never get rid of it.

The GMT400s are the last of the great GM trucks IMO. I have a 1997 Chevy K1500 Suburban still rolling on its original engine at 326,000 miles. That truck has been phenomenal for me and my family. These things don't die easily.
Oh stop, the GMT800s are damn good, I see them with 300-400k routinely like Panther chassis Taxis and Limos.
Dang you must have received a good one. My parents still have their 1999 Suburban - original owners - it’s on engine #2 but original trans. 315k miles today. Replaced engine at 289k.

The 99-07s were good to, I think the powertrains were better than the 88-98, i come across a lot more with 300k+ miles without rebuilds. But I think the 88-98 bodies were a bit tougher and were made of thicker metal.
I remember wrenching on these when I was a mechanic at a Chevy dealer in the late 90's/early 00's. You got lucky, these are bulletproof trucks and super simple to work on. I called mine my "20 minute 20 dollar" truck. In the rare instance something stopped working, 20 bucks and 20 minutes to fix. Color me jealous ❤
Seeing this kinda content is why I started watching Hoovie back in 2018! I agree with what others have said, the supercars are cool, but this kinda stuff is where it's at

I'm starting to realize 30 year old cars were probably the best of all worlds. A good mixture of old school with enough technology to not impact reliability.
96 camry, 289k miles. Doesnt leak or use oil, struts are toast. 33mpg all day every day.

Good find! A true classic and to have someone like you who appreciates this truck for what it is an American icon: comfort, tons of room, and simple mechanics. They just simply don’t make anything like this anymore and it’s a shame.
When I worked in Fleet, I would see these come in with 300,000+ still being worked everyday, hauling and towing, with the original engine and even (not always) the original transmission. Just a great work horse👍
My 1991 Suburban had that underhood light. It has a long cord so you can magnetize it to the body at night if you needed a light to see your way to change a flat tire or something. Yes, they are factory installed. Congrats on the purchase, looks like a keeper!

Hmm, why does my 95 not have it? Maybe the diesels didn't have it?? That air box resonator thing is much bigger on the diesel and takes up that entire area - maybe that's why they didn't put the light in... that sucks

Wizard is right. Most of them were farm trucks. They were designed to be reliable and cheap to fix, but some people are just brutal!
Very, Very Cool Truck!!!!! Not sure where yours was made, but I worked at the GM Flint Truck Assembly Plant back then. These were truly awesome trucks, that could last almost forever, if taken care of. And it looks like you've found a gem. 👍

Love it! Great find. I grew up with these trucks on my Dad's farm & construction business. He's still using all 3 of them for work almost 30yrs later - each one well over 200k with one at 326k & still going strong. Being so far ahead of their time, you really don't give anything up. Great riding, driving, running trucks. Little lower fuel economy, but they last forever and are cheap and easy to fix. I'll definitely be looking for one of these at somepoint
thats the thing...the manufacturers traded dependability for HP numbers and fuel economy. I ran the numbers on my POS 5.4L. Sure you save $3000 over 3 years in fuel but you have to spend $3000 in timing jobs every 3 years.
"it's more efficient" no, it isn't. The most efficient vehicle is the one built once and not needing any major repairs for 30 years.

For anyone with the newer one with the poppet spider injector, get the upgrade and do it yourself. Makes it true EFI and eliminates the frustrating poppet valves. It IS expensive if you have a mechanic do it.
Nice truck. I still drive my 89 c1500 that I've had since I was 16. 350(slightly modified of course)🙂 700r4, 2 door, long bed. Real long bed 8ft. Crank windows. Vinyl floor. Bench seat, best seat for a young man🙂. It's gone everywhere with me. Has never left me stranded. Its babied nowadays but I still drive it once in a while when the weather is nice.
I can’t be mad at you for this. I still own two GMT400’s myself, a ‘95 diesel Suburban and a ‘99 K3500 crew cab diesel stake body. They are hard working, great riding, dependable and comfortable trucks. And I like the way they look.
You have made me appreciate my '97 Chevy 1500 4X4 350 all the more. I bought it 5 years ago in New Mexico (dry climate, no rust) with 83,000 miles. Really, really good condition. Based on current values you quote in the video, I believe I paid for the bargain of my life at $4,000. I may be just a bit happier than you. 😁
Yeah these are appreciating now, I remember pre pandemic a low mile 350 4X4 regular cab short bed went to auction for $10,000. Seems prices are only going up from here
I inherited my late father's 2001 Yukon SLT. We ordered it new together in 2000 and as of today it's only at 78,000 miles. Aside from some door dings, it's immaculate since it was garage stored 100% of the life. I'm VERY happy to have it and use it to pull a boat from time to time. 5.3 Vortec with the 3.73 option.
Be sure to turn off that overdrive when towing

It was used enough so it didn't rot. It is just as bad to not use a vehicle enough as it is to use it too much. There's been a few "dealer" backlot finds of 80's 90's vehicles brand new and never sold or driven. I saw a brand new 80's trans am with 2.3 miles on it. Still had the plastic on the seats, was never even dealer prepped. The prob? Engine had to come out to be rebuild and every rubber seal and hose needed replacing because they were all dry rotted from not being used. The brake fluid had turned to sludge, calipers seized.
Probably cost $20,000 to make it driveable again.

My dad worked at the GM plant, right about when I got my license he got his new 88' maroon and silver two tone extra cab 4x4. I drove that a lot, towed snowmobiles with it. I loved it, I had a few in the late 90's including a 2 wheel drive extra cab then I had a jacked up one a few years ago as kinda of a toy. Awesome trucks.

I bought a 1998 GMC c3500 dually a few months ago. 2 owner truck, gentleman I purchased it off of owned it for 20 years. It is also in very good shape, not quite as nice as yours though, but also all original and unmodified. Been digging mine so far, first GMT400 I've owned.
Adjusted for inflation... that truck today would cost around $50,000. The rough average for a full size pick up in the mid 90s was around $16k ($29k today). So this one was on the more expensive side of the market.
But the top today is not 50K that is just average a top truck like this would closer to 70-100K.

@Mist X in the inflated market of the last 5 to 7 years, and the advent of more luxury options, that truck doesn't compare to modern trucks. However, in 1997, that was pretty close to the top of the line. Average cost (pre-hyperinflation -2019) was $50k for a non base model, crew/extended cab truck. In 2022, that average jumped to about $70k.

I had a 1998 GMC Sierra 1500 and loved that truck, it rode like a dream and I had zero problems with.
I almost cried when I sold it but the 180,000 miles worth of memories I made with it last to this day.
What a time capsule wow. That is so awesome to see one just like that. In very very good condition. That truck makes a good cars and coffee conversation. Lol.

You should ask the wizard to take the trim off around the gauges to see what the manufacturer named this truck (and besides, when you get that scratch fixed on the tailgate at that one detail shop, you should ask them to plastic weld the broken part of the trim)

@@jmoney7289 GMC and Chevy put a sticker with a name on the trim that goes around the speed gauges. If you take it off and look at it it should have a name you should look it up. It’s pretty interesting.

My dad has wanted a truck since before I was born so probably near 20 years now and he finally got a truck. It's a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 that's top of the line with all the good stuff and it was a one owner with 90k miles and he picked it up for 11k. It's super exciting to know he finally got what he wanted so congrats!!
You sir have been blessed to have found this truck. The low mileage, the overall care and how new this truck basically is. Some people have all the luck? Not to mention, where I'm from these trucks are still on the road. 4 and 5 hundred thousand miles, same engine/trans. And I mean a lot of 'em.

O00hh, positively dreamy. I have 570,000km on my '98 Sierra w original drivetrain, just several alternators, rads, brakes, tires over the years.
I’ve got a gmt 800 with 330k on it pretty much all original. That truck is beautiful and props to the owner that took care of that. Those trucks were everywhere when i was younger.
Hopefully Hoovie sees the youtube analytics uplift for these sorts of videos and continues the trend of buying awesome yet affordable classics

I currently have my grandads 96 chevy same color same options and I will never get rid of it. It's pushing 300k but just like this one you can't tell the age on it and he always used a small trailer if he did need to move something so the bed is just as bright as the day he bought it. It doesn't hurt that it got a camper shell as well within 2 months of him buying it new. It's absolutely priceless to me
Man what a beautiful truck! I Currently have a 94 k1500 sport side as my daily driver, also my dad bought it new and was his daily driver for most of its life before passing it onto me, 404,000km currently and it drives great!
Love these trucks. I kept the 95 chevy C1500 stepside 4.3L V6 I drove in high school 20 years ago. Never wanted to get rid of it, still going strong with 177K miles. Needs some interior tlc, TBI rebuild and a few other things, but engine is solid in these.
You should do a dry ice detail on this one. It would really show itself as factory new if you did that.
I miss mine. I had a K1500 Black with the Grey interior. I crashed it and always told myself I'd get another one. Prices shot way up after that, and I'm still waiting.

I had a 93 Suburban 3/4 ton that I ordered from the factory with a 454, dark gray and silver paint with plush light gray interior and the front captains chairs. I loved that monster!
95 and 96 GMT400 facelifted interior is my favorite interior, those were the years before the passenger side air bag was added. I'm an odd person but I also prefer the 60/40 front bench over the dual bucket seats and a center console.
You’re right about the airbag, I have 96 with no airbag and the 60/40 with the lay down center console and I love it. Of course I bought it in 2005 with 116k miles for 5k and now it’s almost to 300k miles and I can easily sell it for 5k in my area.
@@justkegan851 I had a 96 K2500 Suburban SLT with the 6.5TD and had that dash, thats how i know the 96s had them. After selling it and hours of research I realized the 95s had that dash as well.
I too prefer the split bench. I have a 99 classic that is a cloth split bench and a 97 with leather buckets.

My 97 gmc Z71 is my daily driver and work truck. It’s mint condition and has 450 000kms. I’ve had it for 3 years and I’ve spent maybe $2000 in repairs on it. (Brakes, intake gaskets, ball joints) Super reliable, never fails me. The only downside is the mileage.

I remember that apparently for Australia/NZ they were officially sold, but only as Ambulances so they're not common at all. I'm sure they're fetching crazy money now though
I was born 1990. These were my favorite (newest coolest Chevy on the road). When I was 27 I finally bought a 1994, white, with the older blue interior (no air bags) and it was lifted 4 inches. 2 years later it was stolen in Santa Ana. 3 weeks later I flew out to South Carolina (from CA) and bought a 1994, blue, with the older blue interior again, Z71 with 31k miles. I drive it every day and would not want anything else as a truck/daily driver/off road machine. These trucks are just the best. I do like the square body styling better, but as far as reliability and interior comforts, these are better than any new Chevy truck. Wish Chevy would go back to their roots.
The previous owner obviously took an IMMENSE amount of pride in this GMC, and even a blindfolded man could see it. Not real keen on the squarebody-style bumper guards, but every other aspect of the truck itself is immaculate.
The “fancy” bed upholstery additions were head-scratchers for a moment, but becomes clear as day….previous owner most likely employed the camper shell for that precise purpose, to CAMP in. I notice the add-on electric trailer-brake controller, probably pulled a small boat….the condition reminds me of a neighbor from my childhood, had lost an arm in a work accident but remained active. His home and lawn looked like something from a magazine, and he personally maintained his fleet of vehicles…his wife’s Delta 88 was about 5-6 years old(this was circa 1985-86), but you’d swear it had been hermetically sealed because it was so clean.
Best part of Hoovies videos is seeing where he pops out during the introduction and hoping for the trademark leg kick
Personally his need to nick name every mechanic,the "I just came" sound when he sits in comfortable seats, and the ridiculous emphasis on some car colors (riptide blue), is getting annoying. Would be nice to just see authentic content not him trying to be a tv personality constantly. But I still watch all of the content, just my opinion as a long time veiwer.

I mean, the silliest thing he does is hunt down all sorts of neat cars, own so many of them he hardly gets to drive any (also, they are in the shop) then sell them. It's nowhere near how I do things, and it aggravates me... but here I am, watching every episode.😀

I never considered GMC trucks in the past. I'm only slightly younger than Tyler but I've been eyeing trucks a lot more of today but I think the older, simpler ones from the past are more my style and I'm gravitating to them more and more. This truck has changed my opinion about at least some older GMC trucks. Still not a huge fan of the design but the simplicity of it and apparent comfort makes me want one of these for a daily so badly. One day... one day... Great find and congrats! I feel like this will stay in your fleet for a very long time...
I got a '94 and took the thing on some road trips already. They just eat up the miles, and mine with a 350 and a stick (don't remember which rear axle tho) will even get 20MPG out of the old TBI unit, gotta finish the tune-up and hopefully rebuild the TBI unit itself sometime tho!
I'd love it more if it were one year newer so it had the Vortec 350

Reminds me of my dad who passed in 2021. He was a land surveyor and his company had a white one of these. My first time experiencing off-roading was with him in that truck. Good memories.

Obs is and always be my favorite, bought a 95 back in 97 and been hooked since. I am on #7. It's a 98 k2500 with a 454. It was fun to daily before gas went over $3 a gallon.

Seems '95 is the sweet spot for these trucks. This is a very solid contender for a holy grail GMT-400 truck, and not just because of the condition. (Which is impeccable for a 28 year old truck!) It has the E series "modern" electronically controlled transmission paired to the old school TBI SBC. Can't ask for a better combination/configuration than that, you're getting the best of both worlds with this truck!
Although the Vortecs that came after are decent, I'd much prefer an old school TBI engine for the sake of simplicity when servicing. If you've ever had to swap the injector spider on a Vortec, you'd understand my stance on this...
I’ve done multiple spiders and the power and efficiency is well worth the few hours every 300k miles. TBI in a big block is a different story but the 350 is worth the effort for the vortec.
@@justkegan851 To each his own. Truly depends on what you use the truck for. All I need is a utility truck for doing home improvement work/towing the occasional trailer. I have a car for doing grocery runs/long distance commutes and put all the miles on that instead. Having a little less power/economy isn't as big of an issue to me when the truck maybe sees 1000 miles a year, if at that. If you actually daily drive your truck, then by all means go for the Vortec.

Dad had this truck with the 5 speed and the stepwise bed. Same color. He traded it for the obs gangster 98 Tahoe 2dr Z71 in black. That one was to me the greatest obs.
Nice find!!! The GMT400’s are my favorite too! I bought a new 1989 GMC shortwide K1500 SLE Z71 w/deluxe two tone exterior (brandywine over flame red). The front bash plate was in aluminum not plastic! 5.7 w/3.73 ratio, 265 Goodyear Wrangler TD’s. Yellow Bilstein’s. I took it 4 wheeling all over the 4 corners region. Then we started a family & I traded it for a 98 GMC Z71 extended cab 3rd door! That 89 was the best truck I ever had!
I just sold my 86 square body and picked up a 2wd 97 SLT extended cab with only 95k miles and perfect interior! Super exctied to cruise it around this summer!
I just bought a 1997 Silverado single cab long bed from a dealership that bought it from an estate that had like 20 vehicles in it. The old man used my truck as his daily driver, some of the other vehicles he bought new but didn’t drive. He had a 1996 single cab Z71 with ONLY 91 miles. He also had a 1996 Tahoe with ONLY 99 miles, a 2005 Chevy Z71 with ONLY 92 miles, a 1994 convertible Trans Am with ONLY 7 miles. And he had several others with ONLY 100 or 200 miles. Some are still for sale.

You can drive that forever. My dad used one of that generation with the 5.7 TBI on a rural mail route. He had around 250k on it when he retired and traded it in, and that's just the miles. I can't imagine how many hours were on it, seeing how it was running in place a good portion of it's life.

I had three of these trucks 9 years ago all at once. 95-96 had the cup holders in the dash. I had a 95 regular cab 4.3l V6 5spd maual 4x4 8ft bed, a 95 short bed 5.7L 5spd manual 2wd and a 96 extra cab short bed 6.5L diesel 2500 HD. I miss those trucks and wish I didn't give them up.

gmc 1500hd, 2 Dr short bed 5.7 black with manual transmission z71. Every single one was a good truck..
First year of the new interior, last year of the TBI. Nice truck, love it.
I have a 92 cheyenne 4.3 ...5 speed overdrive manual tranny.....I drove it with a bad slave cylinder 20 miles...drove 3 miles out of gas(Guage was stuck at half tank) then just the other day I drove it with a hole in my lower radiator hose....its never left me stuck....I LOVE these trucks,I payed 700$ for it a year ago,it was worked to death and needs some love but I'm getting it there..working on inspection right now
That under hood flash light saved my ass once in my 88 Sierra. That cord will stretch the whole length of the truck if you need it.
