That old outboard runs like a top, when I was a kid I worked on folks outboards as my summer job along with putting docks and lifts in and once of my customers had and old Johnson it was from the 20s really pretty had lots of brass on it, single cylinder and it hadn't run in 45 years and I wanted to get my hands on that engine so bad. Well one day I asked him if I could get it running for him, he said its been so long it will never run again but I could play with it if I wanted to. I took the engine home and pulled the carb of course I had to make all my gaskets to replace the originals general cleaning the needle and seat went through the ignition etc. found I now had spark, put some gas in the tank and that beautiful motor started on the 3rd pull. I filled the tank and put it on my flat bottom and ran it around for awhile tuning the carb then drove it over to his house I think he just about fell off the dock running out to hear it run. He wanted to pay me for getting it running and I just thanked him for the chance to work on it and didnt want any money, it was truly an honor to work on an engine of that vintage!
Very nostalgic because it is the exact same motor my late father, b 1913, used to talk about having in his youth. His description well-nigh perfectly matched my mental image with the reality of your video. My thanks to you. Col (69), NZ.
Heck......you were probably the only person in the world to be running one that day! Loved the video. Just had a ring built for my 1913 and got it back together today.
Somewhere, Ole Evinrude is smiling. Kicked into life on the first pull and running like a fine pocket watch, you can't ask for any better from a motor, old or new.
What a sweetheart if a motor right there. Can't believe the idle and the way it runs so smooth with out a hiccup. What's the fuel mix? I'm sure minimally 16:1 or maybe even more oil. Very cool...
Hi Ben, You made me a video last year of a buzzbox hookup for my Evinrude Rowboat motor. I gave up on the magneto setup because i am not sure of the wiring destinations and if the coil leads are all there. I got a Ford buzzbox, hooked the wires up as per instructions. I am getting a spark to the plug, but she refuses to fire at all. I have the points set at approx. 1/32". I checked the timing and the points CLOSE(weird rowboat motor ignition). just a fraction before commimg to top dead center. This motor had been previously seized. Got it unstuck and rehoned the cylinder. The compression is now so strong that i have to use a heavy duty drill to turn it over. I thought maybe the spark is tooo weak for such strong compression, but it seems bright blue. Only other thing i can think of is timing, If you have any ideas it would be greatly appreciated......I'm stumped.......Thanks, Mike PS I have a used condensor running to the points and the original coil and wiring have been disconected. I am also priming the cylinder with a starter fluid/lube mix....i am not using gas through the carb until i know its going to fire........PS 2......I also found it strange that your buzzbox hookup spots are different from others i have seen on outboard sites, however it seems to fire either way........UPDATE...Whooo Hoooo, SMOKE IN THE BASEMENT...I figured it out.....Feels so good.....
Ben, that is a sweet motor!! She runs very nice!!! You lucky dog!!! Thanks for sharing with a video!! It put a smile on my face!! Where is Pepper? Is Pepper only a fan of the Chrysler motors!!! lol
Thanks for the video, it really runs smooth, better that my 1978 tohatsu! By the way, how do you clean the carbon deposits? does it have? the cilinder looks pretty much like completely sealed?
Best outboard motor hauling ass.. I love the starter.. He he he.. What a pleasure to watch.. Like WOW.. Thanks again.. Hey ole evenrude will have that ice cream yet with this rapoed ape.. Thanks again.. If i hit the lottery i will give you a price you cannot refuse.. Thanks again..
I would be interesting if OSHA has statistics on how many of those flywheel knobs came flying off in an inopportune direction. On a side note, I have my Dad's old 4.8? hp twin, made before there were recoil starters.
Hi Ben. Another great video. I have, what i believe is a 1915 Evinrude Rowboat motor with magneto ign. Coils are shot of course. I was looking for some videos on here for making a Buzz Box for this motor. Have you had any experience with making these boxes? Any good? Any help would be appreciated. I would love to try and get this motor running this year. Thanks, Manitoba Mike.
Mike Johnson Hi Mike: Well yes you can run it off of a buzz coil, what i use is a Ford model T buzz coil and they can be found very cheep, i got two of them last year at swap meets for about 10 bucks each. I think what you have to do is disconnect everything from the points and just use the buzz coil. If you like i can make you a video of what i use.
chrysleroutboarddude Hi Ben; Thank You very much for the video, very helpful. I tried to upload a Video of my rowboat motor but was unsuccesful. I could email you some pics but i don't know if there is a more private way of doing this.
whats new to me is that Ole Evinrud is a Norwegian, people here gets all nationalistic talking about the cheese slicer, but here is something to be proud of, Evinrude outboards!
it must have crazy torque to move a boat at that speed if its doing so little rpm's. there is one at Oakley marines (brighton) where i work that still has original paint. but needs new wiring box as it is rotten through.
It run's on Gasoline and oil mix, all the info that i have on it does not say anything but Gasoline, i do not know how common gas was but the model T was on the road in 1908
Dude! I’ve been watching your videos for years. I couldn’t tell anyone your name. Is it Ben Dunbar, bun yanur, brun ranmur? Dude! I’m a subscriber and I’d like to know your name. Thanks Max Hammontree.
Haha what a sweetie!!! Some how I find it difficult to imagine any thing wrong in the world with that chugging along.... (The totally health and safey fly wheel thing in the middle)
I think I have the same model. It belonged to my grandfather who died in 1946 two years before I was born. It been in a garage ever sense. I wish That I knew how to attach a picture

That would have been super cool and fun 😁
Thanks for that story! Cool stuff
Sounds like a Hiawatha
1913 was the year my father was born! Thanks for the little history lesson....
Notice that you are a Pink Floyd fan, now I know I'm on the right channel! Thank you for your tiller motor insight sir
Oh YES I AM.. And thank you..
Very nostalgic because it is the exact same motor my late father, b 1913, used to talk about having in his youth. His description well-nigh perfectly matched my mental image with the reality of your video. My thanks to you. Col (69), NZ.
What a neat old motor. Wow! That engine is 101 years old this year. Amazing!!
I could listen to that old motor purr all day out on the water. Very nice.
I like people who use old things for what they were meant for instead of using them for decorations and babying them. keep up the good work!
I don't know why but I come back and watch this video every 6 months or so. Cool old motor!
Yea it's fun.
That's cool, love the sound of those old moters.
WOW, that is something. People give me thumbs up for my 56 Evinrude 7.5, it's modern compared to the 1913!
Goomer my Christmas present in 1957 was a 7.5 Evinrude under the Christmas Tree. Put it on my 10 foot racing pram. Special times!
That is such a well made great engine, hope you still have it an run it. Its 100 years old this year..WOW
I really enjoy watching those old motors run.I hope to come across one one day.
Been watching your videos for years. This motor is my favorite. I have a 56 Johnson 7.5', a 69 Johnson 6hp, and an 87 Johnson 20hp on my other boat.
Sweet! Wish I had one of these pieces of museum. That old engine runs pretty good. Keep it alive. Awesome the "starter" system. ;-)
Virtually exactly what I just wrote see above haha!!
"New" is a term used loosely here
Just loving watching your videos
I think it is 2hp at 850rpm.
that is one sweet old motor. keep up the good work
Thanks for taking the time to shoot the video!
She runs really well!! I like the sound it makes while running.
What a sweetheart if a motor right there. Can't believe the idle and the way it runs so smooth with out a hiccup. What's the fuel mix? I'm sure minimally 16:1 or maybe even more oil. Very cool...
I love these old motors!
I love the coolant plopping out that top tube haha
Ben, did you run this one on it's 100th anniversary (2013)?
Yes i did..Still running good.:)
That is a sweetheart motor. My oldest is a 1926 Johnson p-30...first of the big twins.

Amazing how something that old is running... and my 96 fails to start ever 3 trips
We have a 1915 been in our family 4 or 5 generations. Hasn't been running for 60 years that I know of
. Decal is still on it
Wow. What a great running engine.
This one should be in museum 👍🏼, i own 2015 evinrude e etc 150 i hope it run for 50 years 😁
Issa Al-shukaili No chance
Ben, that is a sweet motor!! She runs very nice!!! You lucky dog!!! Thanks for sharing with a video!! It put a smile on my face!! Where is Pepper? Is Pepper only a fan of the Chrysler motors!!! lol

that is just one of the coolest engines i have ever seen. awesome video!
That was made before my time! nice motor!
I have a complete Evinrude Model B with a solid flywheel. Any idea how old it is? I love your video!
That old engine runs better then some new outboard motors!
That hose over the transom the water pick up?
Best outboard motor hauling ass.. I love the starter.. He he he.. What a pleasure to watch.. Like WOW.. Thanks again.. Hey ole evenrude will have that ice cream yet with this rapoed ape.. Thanks again.. If i hit the lottery i will give you a price you cannot refuse.. Thanks again..
i would assume this is a premixed gas 2 stroke?
I would be interesting if OSHA has statistics on how many of those flywheel knobs came flying off in an inopportune direction. On a side note, I have my Dad's old 4.8? hp twin, made before there were recoil starters.
Yes i still have it and yes it is still running.
a lovely engine, and a great runner
I am very curious to know what the fuel is? Gasoline was not so common back in 1913 and I wqndered is this engine was made to use alcohol?

Mike Johnson Hear is a video i made for you.th-cam.com/video/EaUx-VDDCUQ/w-d-xo.html
chrysleroutboarddude Hi Ben; Thank You very much for the video, very helpful. I tried to upload a Video of my rowboat motor but was unsuccesful. I could email you some pics but i don't know if there is a more private way of doing this.
it runs as nice as my 1917 evinrude, nice motor ben.
It might be a long-stroke engine?? Maybe the long stroke, unlike the short-stroke engines, doesn't require high rpm's for alot of torque?
and frig, I would love to run that good when I'm 100
I think it would just be good to run at 100.
Love the sport twin great running engine
You don't know where I can get some parts for a 1948 sportsman?
Amazing watching a 107 year old engine.
whats new to me is that Ole Evinrud is a Norwegian, people here gets all nationalistic talking about the cheese slicer, but here is something to be proud of, Evinrude outboards!
Love that water line beat Mercury with the pee hole by years!
are you running ethanol gas ! or non ethanol

Is that 4 stroke?
I am curious to know how it works.
It appears that 7 people are a-holes. That's a piece of history!
love these old boad motors could sit and listen to it run for hours. thing would probley troll all day, make for a fun day of fishing.
Amazing! That's a good motor!
bolt a propeller on top so it lifts back of boat higher for shallow water crossing
Oh my lord. That's 100 years old next year!
Better than the 4 strokes of today.
evinrude still rocks.
interesting. im the guy interested in the 25hp to alcohol conversion. perhaps decking a 25. we talked on the phone. very interesting.tonka dude.
It run's on Gasoline and oil mix, all the info that i have on it does not say anything but Gasoline, i do not know how common gas was but the model T was on the road in 1908
Where is the engine? All we can see is a flywheel...
Its the lump of cast iron sticking out the front.
How do you turn it off?
damn... runs better than my 6hp johnson
Johnson is evinrude!
I bet that thing cost some bucks back in the day! Nice vid. Thanks!
I blinkin bet it did.
The 3.3hp sportwin is a good motor but the motor on the left is a Sportsman 1.5hp.
Mesmerizing beauty !!!
Beautiful
Just beautiful.
Does this motor have a buzz coil?
Jarrett Newcomb Yes It does.
Yes the AOMCI meet in Tomahawk wi.
I wonder if it can run in either direction....
Genners111 Yes it can.
chrysleroutboarddude I thought so, because I see no easy way of physically turning the engine around to reverse and no gear lever of any kind.
sounds good,Ben!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tomahawk, Wi?
Like a Swiss watch👍
Dude! I’ve been watching your videos for years. I couldn’t tell anyone your name. Is it Ben Dunbar, bun yanur, brun ranmur? Dude! I’m a subscriber and I’d like to know your name.
Thanks
Max Hammontree.
they dont build engines like they used to.
grettagrids thank god
@NPC #34254334 Response: ...and they develop tons of problems within the decade of owning them
@@motorhead6763 you must like unreliable outboards that start on the 39th pull every time!
awesome!
That is bad ass bro!
Haha what a sweetie!!!
Some how I find it difficult to imagine any thing wrong in the world with that chugging along....
(The totally health and safey fly wheel thing in the middle)

Does this have an ignition box?
Yes I use a Ford buzz coil.
@cajuncookone Pepper was with me.she is a fan of me and the boat.
max rpm = 12
Ps I have some Chrysler question if you wouldn’t mind.
Just amazing!
that thing is cool!
outdoorsman310 Thank you.
Boy, would it be painful to have your hand hit by that little starter handle...
That is why they called it the knuckle buster.
Genners111 that's the first thing I thought when I saw this
I don't think youd look for it haha
Then again it was easier than rowing....
Nice video !!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing.......
Thats bad ass!
i go to the AOMCI meet every year
Very nice
show us the details
Love it
