The AAA Devs have been way too comfortable for too long, and games like BG3 and Elden Ring are a big wake-up call for them that they need to step up and stop making the games that are now just at this point ways for them to make money easier while having little for the consumer.

the outrage for diablo IV skins can be logically proven correct for the following reasons:
-skins and cosmetics are a motivation to play the game. call of duty 4 had skins you had to earn. it was a motivator. the game was structured around this. lots of games are structured around this. destiny one the rarest items and ships were the prize. when you got it. you were accomplished. you made a long journey.
that no longer exists. you pay money. Whats the motivator now? more loot? for what? wheres the achivement? your just doing the same thing with bigger numbers. its not about the skins. its about the games being structured around working to acheive something. and they took that away. and replaced it with nothing. and now. the achievement. the ability to look the way you want. is only through money. many games have had their entire design and structures upended with no changes to account for that. the content is structured around being a place for people to show off how much money they spent. not how much they know about the game to get that armor set or how dedicated they are to have gotten the rarest skin. like the skull helmet in halo reach that took a long time to get. when you got it. the game was saying "hey. we acknowledge the work you put into the game. we appreciate your love of the game. here. have this. this is a trophy. its a symbol for our community. and a symbol for you. the people that make it all possible."
doesnt exist anymore. instead its psychological conditioning. who cares if the game is "fun" when every dev worth anything can make something "fun" and just not stick their finger up your ass like that. by demanding that same time and energy and love from you. and throw addiction and habit forming tactics at you instead. because they hate you and want you to spend money.
thats the real rub here. they design the games around achievement. and then take a big part of that achievement and sell it back to you.

what really busts my balls about the whole thing is it feels like such petty high school shit where the devs for BG3 did amazing on a test, and set the grading curve, and everyone else in the class is pissed that they worked hard, studied, and earned their good grade.

Yeah... Those being Indie Devs, and smaller B-Teir Studios. Triple-A Companies with Net Worths ranging from $33.11 billion to $71.41 billion, with thousands of employees under their employ are NOT one of those few studios. These AAA Devs have no excuse, especially since technology is getting better, and more consoles having more RAM and Processing Power should theoretically allow for more experimentation for larger and expansive levels with more complex styles of gameplay. I can't shake the feeling that No Man's Sky's """redemption arc""" and the existence of Gacha Games are the reason why it's acceptable for games to be broken microtransaction slop.
The No Man Sky devs fixed the broken mess their game was after some years and were praised by the masses for it. Even though No Man's Sky should've been a working product from the start, they were forgiven nonetheless. These current devs expect you to forgive their broken games too.
Gacha Games incorporate microtransactions as an immutable part of the core gameplay loop, with most having daily item/character pulls and time-out systems to ensure that their players continue being addicted to random luck dopamine and buy bulks of the time-replenish item using real money.
Genshin Impact is one of the most well-known Gacha Games in the West along with Fate Grand Order and Arknights, but EA is the company that has long since specialized in creating Western Gacha Games with their Madden titles.
Gacha Games never end and make CRAZY MONEY which is why every half-baked dev team wants a slice of that Addict Pie.

Baldurs gate is an amazing game, but I wouldn't say it necessarily "raised standards" by that much, it's that AAA studios have lowered our standards so thoroughly that when a game comes out that is functional, reasonably priced, has no micro-transactions or predatory dlcs, we consider that a once in a decade thing. The effort put into this game should be the Rule, Not the exception.

Just as I'm starting to give up expecting better from modern games and feeling like I gotta lower my expectations, we get a game like this or Elden Ring that reminds us, "No! You should expect games from 2023 to have more quality and content than games that came out in the 2010's."

I love how they site that Larian has access to the D&D IP and that is a factor on why the gam is so successful. I would just like to point out that MANY studios have had access to WH40K franchise and we are yet to see a game comparable to this. The fact that having lore/worlds to build from and no one else can be arsed to use them isn't a reason for you to make shitty games AAA companies, you're just being held to account from people that actually care.

My one biggest gripe with BG3 is the multiplayer. If you start a campaign and invite 3 friends in you're now locked out of being able to do a massive chunk of the games quests because you literally can't swap out any of those characters with the origin characters that are necessary for a number of the quest chains. The worst part about this is that the devs have confirmed that this is an intentional game design choice following on from doing the same in the divinity series which people also hated.

@@JimDuggan-tq2lv Nah we have 3 of us playing regularly and the 4th joined us for one night... now we're wanting to swap that 4th out to get the origins in to do their quest chains but instead we have to start again if we want that.

And here I am, with 30+ hours put into BG3 and I am immensely enjoying it. I'm not even done with Act I yet and I am already planning to do a second playthrough. This game is absolute golden, it's in my opinion the best thing released in years.

Great video BigfryTV glad to see Destin saying this sort of thing because we do need a new standard and hold AAA devs accountable and I'm no expert on game design but still that doesn't mean that devs should only care about the shareholders and money they need to care more about the players because if AAA devs start doing some shady shit or doing a half assed job on their game then we need to either stop buying their games to start buying games from devs who actually care.

Some people shop with QUALITY in mind above all else. Lowering quality will get you in the end. Lowering quality leaves the door open for someone to grab your business from you. This is what the AAA developers are actually upset about. They have been lowering quality without people realizing it for near a decade. When a game like BG3 comes along it brings that into the light. They will scrutinized now as much as they should've always been.

The thing about Baldurs Gate 3 and Larian Studios as a whole is that its 450 employees who are purely working on this game and nothing else which hardly any studios that size are fully focused on one game. Insomniac and Naughty Dog have around the same amount of employees but are split between a bunch of projects yet they still produce incredible games.

I remember back in the day when we could rely on gaming companies who brought good quality games to the people, without predatory monitization, like Blizzard games had a quality with it, all their games they released was polished and was fun on arrival! It was a long time ago now though, I and everyone I know ended up disliking Blizzard after all their stunts over these past years and unfortunately many other companies doing the same. I hope that we as gamers, show the developers that we won't take their crap anymore. Vote with the wallet people, don't buy their shit games and for the love of god, DO NOT pre-order games, always wait for a review and no paid reviews who gives shit games 9 out of 10, or 10 out of 10. After a game is released, give it a few days before even considering buying it and trust me, if a game is bad, it will be all over the internet, saving your hard earned cash.

Idk why Triple A Devs are getting upset about this, didn't Rockstar like level of scope increase the quality of Open World genres as a whole? It's also not just Rockstar as well, Saint's Row, Saints Row 2 and hell even Saints Row the third, It's the same with Bethesda's RPG titles from Morrowind to even the Jank Fallout 76. Like wasn't this how we got here, Massive Scope that was never promised, didn't under deliver, didn't release a mess, it instead gave us a game that stood higher than the others and later became a great foundation of ideas. This is why I have a sliver of hope hidden away for Starfield, after the Larian debacle it only gave me more respect for Bethesda because they made a game that's out of the scope of 99% of the industry. It's kinda funny listening to people's reaction on how feature rich Starfield was, then there I sat dumbfounded they would complain it has so much in it when 10 years earlier these feature rich games existed already, there's my rant deffo gonna be called a shill, anyways have a nice day.

The only argument I could see being a credible counter point is Dev crunch time. The issue is, we shouldn't push for a standard for the Devs per se, but rather expectations from Execs, Boardmembers, and CEOs should be changed since it tends to be on management why these games release in poor states, over-monetized, and might be fixed later.
