@@SereneJudo Great observations. I've known quite a few guys who chased the title of Best Fighter In The World, and it's a fiction. If you are undefeated, it usually means you haven't fought enough. If Muhammad Ali has a loss, then anyone can lose. Michael Jordan hasn't won every game he's ever played. BJJ has its uses but under a different rule set, where for example, multiple guys can stomp your groin and kick your head, maybe being on your back is not the way to go.

I'm so glad you have some of this footage documented.It is very important for us and future generations to get to see and hear directly. Not just quotes or words on a page. We are lucky, a lot of Martial arts don't have that. Teaching opens the mind👍

Totally agree, Belts colors should be based on techniques learning and understanding, not fighting skills. In fact I saw strong white belts tapping purple belts. So, one thing is fighting and rolling and another thing its understanding the bbj, for the first one you have Medals and for the second one you have color belts (grades)

murilo ninj I don't know where you come from but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu DOES NOT issue belts as easily as you've mentioned here (I've never heard of it). Everyone fights, but you don't get a black belt let alone any colored belt after "A" fight, even if you participated and won Gold in the olympics. If thus is the case, I'd be wearing the Red Colored belt Master Helio is wearing, but I'm not. The Professor (A BJJ teacher) will issue a student a NEW colored belt after, in their professional opinion, you have shown progress or have matured the techniques taught and they have witnessed you apply it numerously during training and in competition with fluidity. Doing it once WILL NOT earn you a belt change, nor doing the "same technique" a thousand times. A NEW colored belt is NEVER issued after ANY fight. It would take an average student at LEAST 4-6months to earn "A stripe" on their belt (a professors acknowledgement of a students performance confirming that in his/her professional opinion you are advancing and showing constant and continuous improvement). Majority of the students earn a new colored belt at least 12-18months of rigorous training, commitment and progress. If you are enrolled or know of a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school that issues its students new belts after "A fight" or after an MMA competition, I'd like you to put the Schools name here for everyone to see as proof! Not, because you've heard someone said it which is why you've elaborated it here. If you don't know anything about something in general, SHUTUP. He has maintained that he is a catch wrestler and does not practice in gi, with guards, sweeps or any bjj derived stratagem... Whats the basis of his promotion? Why would you offer out a random on TH-cam? That is beyond sense. Offer out Erik Paulson for Barnett's promotion and Rigan Machado for endorsing it. Offer out the professors that promoted Penn and Terra. For the jaded, these promotions are marketing ploys to associate the fighters to their academies for business. This is not the ideal that we hear Helio himself talk about in this clip, is it? Ask Barnett to run you through bjj basics from the guard and within guard... he doesnt train or have trained it. So when did the professors see him apply it numerous times and fluidly? He has a Machado endorsed black belt... Lets excuse Tony Ferguson for the black belt after winning in the UFC, or for his own professor, Eddie Bravo who got a black after his victory in 2003 over Royler in Dubai. Or you can challenge them as well. After all, if you feel that someone stating that it happens somehow deserves something then surely the examples even more so. I myself dont care. Has Rickson seen this video? Since receiving and refusing to wear his Red belt. It's interesting because I see both points of view. Rickson and Helio both make solid points from differing opinions.
He is the only reason I practice Jiu-Jitsu. I would have been turned off by the majority of people who represent Jiu-Jitsu because of age or physical prowess. Those things are interesting "to an extent" but in the long run Helio's philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone, especially for the weak to defend against the strong. Most of Jiu-Jitsu is "look how strong or well conditioned I am" in a manor of speaking. Hello said Jiu-Jitsu is first an effective self defense martial art.
In most arts when you understand one form of sacred geometry you achieve rank, it's kinda stuck in jujitsu because you can turn even the most basic exercise into a square, circle, triangle etc and build sacred geometric pictures with it so the trancendance is unneeded. So the fact that you can teach structures having different teaching methodology makes sense. I just put this out there because there is 1000 of sacred geometrical pictures, like the kenpo crest, the Spanish circle, the yin yang diagram and pakua, the Jewish star, etc.. etc.. etc.. on and on forever. I think some people who didn't find this coralation search endlessly for since in there own system because they always evolve into the next level and the old system doesn't fit into the new one yet the structures are the same there just making a new picture. Hope this helps anyone who is stuck in this there is no one way but 1000 of ways that are still correct. Helio is a grandmaster and regardless of how anyone feels he has his standards for achievement in his art and that isn't for anyone to judge except himself. There is different competences for certain skills, teaching methods, and even loss of personal self preservation, that warrent special training and advancement. There is also promotional life achievements and honerary ranks. I'm sure any of it has its reasons. I made a comment about system information that everyone did a double take in a way earlier post it was because I saw someone who was searching for this I hope he gets this message it really has nothing to do with this fine system or any other martial art or trying to flex it was ment to kinda open a door that we look at all the time and passively ignore.
Helio was trying to stress the importance of teaching BJJ. Passing it on, and inspiring the next generation. That's what it's all about, you're ability as an instructor to inspire those below to great heights. That's what martial arts are really all about.
In all honesty I prefer no gi over wearing a gi as in general the belt grading system is the most flawed system in all of combat sports. I remember getting my yellow belt in kickboxing and the same day a guy got his brown belt. We sparred before we got our belts and I destroyed him in sparring. That alone was one of the main reasons I stopped going to that school as I would also spar a blue belt regularly and would batter him in sparring.
Grandmasters Carlos And Hélio Gracie always used a merit based system. Some other examples of practitioners who received degrees quicker than the average times: Rickson Gracie received his seventh degree before the age of 30, Rigan Machado got a 5th degree when he was only 25. Receiving degrees because of time is senseless. Imagine graduating from college and then, automatically, receiving the masters degree after 3 yrs and after another 3 years receiving the PHD.

+Gary McIvor Not all schools charge for stripes on belts, in fact, many dont use stripes at all. At my school, they use stripes, but as an indication of your progress as an individual. We don't pay to take an exam and we receive them when the instructor thinks we are ready, and not before. Are they important? Probably more so for children than adults, but, it feels nice to have confirmation of your progress, particularly in BJJ, when belt awards are measured in multiples of years, rather than months. It's useful for motivation and to assist with pairings in class, for example.

My school doesn't charge for stripes just gotta buy the new color on your own when you earn it.
Back when i used to train in the 90's we had no stripes nor did we have to buy the new color. After rolling the professor would just drop a new belt on your lap, the whol;e class would clap then youd have to run the guanlet and get whipped by everones belt.
WHY do you have to get whipped ,i assume this is kind of ceremony or something? i have seen fighters choke them with their belt after the guy receives a new belt,is that the same thing

Receiving degrees because of time is senseless. Imagine graduating from college and then, automatically, receiving the masters degree after 3 yrs and after another 3 years receiving the PHD.

I agree however it is also important to exist a time just to set things right for example if that were to happen all of these legends like felipe preguiça,leandro lo and etc would be red belts because of their ability since jiu jitsu is a filosofy itself more time=more knowledge but we shouldn’t stick to the system strictly i think it should be just right

+Gary McIvor Not all schools charge for stripes on belts, in fact, many dont use stripes at all. At my school, they use stripes, but as an indication of your progress as an individual. We don't pay to take an exam and we receive them when the instructor thinks we are ready, and not before.
Are they important? Probably more so for children than adults, but, it feels nice to have confirmation of your progress, particularly in BJJ, when belt awards are measured in multiples of years, rather than months. It's useful for motivation and to assist with pairings in class, for example.
My school doesn't charge for stripes just gotta buy the new color on your own when you earn it.
Back when i used to train in the 90's we had no stripes nor did we have to buy the new color. After rolling the professor would just drop a new belt on your lap, the whol;e class would clap then youd have to run the guanlet and get whipped by everones belt.
I go to a Gracie certified academy. NO stripes for white belts and just the usual fee for membership.
WHY do you have to get whipped ,i assume this is kind of ceremony or something? i have seen fighters choke them with their belt after the guy receives a new belt,is that the same thing

Let’s be honest you don’t need a belt to do bjj. You don’t see the best Olympic wrestlers needing a belt to make them feel cool. The belt system is one of the main reasons it gets called a cult. Also it’s a money grab.
