On "My Car Story" we're in West Suburbs of Chicago on 11-6-20.
We're looking at a 1948 Studebaker Champion Regal Deluxe Convertible in Yellow Paint. The car features the factory 169 CI inline 6 cylinder engine with 80 HP.
The car's Owner is Frank Troost. Frank’s had this car since 2012. In Frank’s collection this is his oldest car. This one has been restored, and looks pretty close to showroom new.

Frank Troost does an excellent job of presenting his cars. It's never dull seeing one of his cars because you get so much history behind automobiles of that period!

Studebaker really had the style and great engineering. It's amazing they could do so much with limited capital and with fierce competition from Detroit they produced such great cars.

Thanks for posting, Lou. Frank is always knowledgeable about his cars, and the trunkin' treats were great. Studebakers ran hot, were underpowered and were prone to rust. They could have been made over here in the UK!
And they also usually leaked oil. That said, they almost always won the Mobil Gas Economy Run. Don't buy one without overdrive, which most of them had.

Hi, Lou! First by far with a postwar car! Studebaker was definitely proud to shout it, and there was no mistaking it for anything else, especially the coupes with the wraparound backlight. The styling was such that many people at the time would ask "Which way is it going?", and in 1948 about the only cars that stood out as well as this would have been the new "Step Down" Hudsons and the new Cadillacs with those first tailfins. They certainly made for all those colorful ads that Frank had to show us.

My late Father was a "dyed-in-the-wool" Studebaker man until their demise in 1966...after that it was mostly Ford and Lincoln-Mercury vehicles, with one Orange Gremlin thrown in the mix for good measure! Thanks for the great video and my compliments to the Owner!

It kind-a-sort-a looks like a Tucker. Beautiful car. I remember my dad telling that at that time everything was an option. Heaters were often installed at the dealership.

Interesting side note is that Rover imported this model of Studebaker for design inspiration bay in the late 40s. It is clear the first generation of Rover P4 were based on these especially the rear which bares a very close resemblance. Ironic that it became a British icon, institution even. Always enjoy seeing Frank and his cars.

Pretty rare find there Lou. That part about the windshield being one piece is more interesting than he talked about. On the convertible, the glass is all one piece because they call that, " Structure" glass. That gives the frame more strength. When they do a real hard top, the structure doesn't need to be as strong, because the roof metal increases the strength of the vehicle. So on a hardtop, they can use a double window. What a nice car.

Studebaker was a HUGE company and had huge buildings. It's a shame that WWII interrupted their powerhouse company. My Aunt, who is in her 90s, had one of these from that era and called it her "little studie." She has good memories of that car! As a young 64, I love old cars of every make!

Nice vehicle with an interesting features and history. Amazing that Frank secured all that supporting material in your trunk and treats part. Studebakers were really good and innovative cars and it was unfortunate that they went out of business. I like these kinds of segments best as they bring forward cars that most people would never see. Thanks Lou for sharing yet another great part of automotive history.
Read that high union wages destroyed the Co. They caved to the unions every strike demand.

@@bextar6365 I heard the same. Its a real shame. Best thing you can do with unions is make them stakeholders in the firms they work for. Once folks have a financial interest they might be more prudent in their demands.

Another great video Lou. You never see any Studebaker convertibles. My grandpa had a 1950 model Champion 2 door. That he owned for alot of years think he paid like 200 dollars for in the late 1950s. He drove it for alot of years.

My father had a 1949 Studebaker Champion with 85 hp. When it was new he couldn't get enough power to get it up a hill to take my sister and me to school and had to change the route! In 1952 he replaced it with a Studebaker Commander V8!

Yes, this thing is SWEET! From the thumbnail I wouldn't of known it was a Stude' that I would think of. It's really a cool body style and would look great with some mild hot rodding pretty easy too!

My parents had a 1948 Studebaker convertible similar to the example you had for us today. My mom really liked it a lot, but it leaked oil like a sieve. Then my dad traded it in on a 1953 Chevrolet.

...oh, Lou...what a pleasure to see Frank ( Alan Alda's lost brother...)...he is such a likable guy with an endless supply of stories...a "natural" for your channel...not like some car guys who freeze up on camera...can't get more than two words from those guys...
...anyhoo, Frank's '48 was one of the first entirely new car lines (as of '47), and Frank's in Tulip Cream is a near-perfect example ( advantage of buying a museum car, which wouldn't have seen any winter weather/road salts...
...BTW, outside rear view mirrors were mandated in a state-by-state basis ..but not required in all 50 until the mid-60's (!!??)...
...this seems so counter-intuitive, but you have to bear in mind that passenger safety really was given little to no attention until Ralph Nader's exposee on Chevrolet's Corvair in 1961..
...being a big fan of the "ponton" sided cars from the late 40's and early 50's, I'm always impressed by the smooth lines, and all the little chrome touches typical of the era...

My 2017 standard shift Honda has that *hill holder* feature. Personally, I don't like it, but I suppose it bears mentioning. Interesting to me that this feature existed over 70 years ago.

I am disappointed that it was mentioned, that young american people just go by at car shows. Not only you don't see a Studebaker at all, but all classic american cars have something to offer. This is the ultimate american heritage to me, post WW2 era cars to mid seventies. Studebaker like this and many other american cars are a huge reason for us europeans to visit Cuba. It's almost like time traveling. Sure, most of their cars have different engines now, but at least you can see them just driving by on the streets like it's a common thing in 2021. I'd sure as hell stop by Frank's Studebaker to make photos from all angles. Then I'd read up on it later at home too. By the way interesting information once again Lou. Frank knows his cars and the old promo materials are superb..."eyefilling Studebaker" 😅
This car is now well over 70 years old, so I think 85 horse power is nothing to be ashamed of. It was common in Europe till like the year 2000.
The pastel yellow with the red interior makes for a good contrast. Just imagine Frank with period correct clothes showing up at a US car meeting. He'd just steal the show 🏆. The chrome grill is an american icon in itself too.
When your car's named Champion Regal Deluxe, you get the royal treatment...ride like a king 👑.

Beautiful car. You know my favs are the late '30's- '40's art-deco models. I'm usually a purist, but I must say, those later wheel covers look terrific on the car. As far as the Radium thing, look up a doc on "The Radium Girls". These girls painted clock faces with the stuff in a factory in NJ. They were instructed to roll a point on their brushes with their tongues. One by one their teeth fell out and their bones crumbled. A horrific story.

I must be pretty old fashioned because even though Studebaker was long gone before I was born I still appreciate them and actually have a 1/64 Studebaker-(and when a 1/64 Packard). In my Die Cast collection!!
And even a 1/64 Packard even though they were long gone before I was born!!
I have a 1/64 53 Packard Convertible and a 51 Studebaker Champion Coupe with the bullet nose in my die cast collection amongst all my muscle car die casts and models ..

Having worked at the museum which is right next-door to the Studebaker museum I had a lot of interaction especially when the museum is being designed when I work for the Heritage foundation. I’m glad the museum was moved from the old Freeman Spicer building. Which was falling apart and now it has a good home.
It was a sad day when the Studebaker corporation closed. But South Bend moved on.

The color on this beautiful Studebaker is called Tulip Cream and it was only available on convertibles, according to what I've read. These cars were revolutionary when new in 1948. It wasn't until 1949 that slab-sided Fords and Chevys were available.
Body style was used from 47 to 52.

That dashboard is a work of art. I wonder how difficult it would be to convert that clock into a tachometer.
If you don't drive Studebaker convertibles in winter, they shouldn't rust.
A well-paid non-productive worker would have the time needed for building cars properly. When you hurry people, you could then expect mistakes in workmanship

Yes radium. Used often for similar items, e.g., watch hands despite radium being radioactive. This was time too that shoe stores had x-ray machines to view whether the shoves fit.

The hub caps are those of a 1957 Commander. You`re wrong about the windshield, my 48 Landcruiser had a curved one piece. A SDC member since 1974.

Why on earth would you want that. That hideous modernized muscle car. Don't you forget the only reason it differs from any other modern car, is because they made it resemble the look back then, without that past form, it's just a Kia, or a Chevrolet caprice.
@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar I think the 2011-2013 Camaro convertible retro body is good looking. Same with with late 90s to mid 2000 Mustang. That 48 Studebaker has some great lines that the right designer could modernize into a retro design with modern materials imo.
@@robertpace901 you seem to think modern materials are better, but don't forget that your watching them test a 70 year old car next to a brand new one, and comparing it to being equal. It's the age, not the time with "primitive material" as so many somehow think. (There is a common misconception where I misunderstand what you mean, are you calling the time old, or are you saying the vehicle is old, and needs fresh newly woven material-hammered metal) because I can assure you that all the materials held up incredibly well, it's just most of the crashes took place outside of cities in the 1950's on the 60 miles highway system and towns where laws were less abided by the speedy type of people. Those crashes in the 1950's wrecks aren't going 30-40, it's more so 50 to 70. And I'll tell you there is a striking showcase of a 40 versus 50 mile per hour car crash. The modern is hideous at 50. At 70 the front passenger section is ripped off entirely, that will never happen with an older automobile with framed designed to stick together because they were smarter knowing that being crushed is more important than having a crumpled hit, and they still Incorporated that on many models hence why the front isn't fully solid. The miscommunication there is that they weren't talking to the infrastructure designer on how they created it in 1950, so assume they lied about the metal being stiff and strong, when there's tons of different forms both powerful, and others able to fold.
@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar I appreciate the design on the old car and would like to see what a designer or two or three or six might do if it were to be made today. Why is that a problem for you?
Whoa, Nissan trucks or Toyota maybe had that anti rollback clutch/brake thing and this electric overdrive sounds quite similar to the modern Gear Vendors over/under drive expensive unit installed in everything from big trucks to race and street cars for splitting gears for a tighter ratio and deep overdrive... even 2 speeds in reverse!
