@0:43 Phonak earpieces are another good solution for when you've got background noises (be it music playing, or lighting bolts, or other cues, or lines being fed, or whatever), especially when you've only got a few people in the scene. (obviously not practical if you've got hundreds of dancing extras in the background!) A **HUGE** benefit of some "professional" sound blankets is that you can get them with white on one site, and black on the other! Very useful for when you need to work together with the Lighting Department. (but you can easily add these to your own moving blankets with a little bit of DIY, by sewing on a white sheet to one side)
Great video. Two comments. First sound blankets can also be used for fill light and negative fill. Just look for blankets with a white side and a black side. The other thing is something I posted in the past that Moving blankets are rated in "pounds per dozen". Light duty are 35 lbs/dz. Medium duty are 60 lbs/dz. Heavy duty are 90 lbs/dz. Real sound blankets are probably heavier. The heavier the blanket, the more they absorb and diffuse. Sound blankets quite often have multiple eyelets on each side. You can add these with a brass 3/8"-1/2" eyelet sets. No sewing, just a hammer, punch and die set. You might want a 2" x 2" nylon or canvas backing on each side under the eyelet. You can use black cotton cord to tie them up. The least expensive heavy duty black/white blankets I have found are Supreme Mover Moving Blankets, 4 blankets for $90. Here is the exact blanket description on amazon: Supreme Mover Moving Blankets | 72 inch x 80 inch Heavy Duty Black and White Moving Pads| 7.5 pounds each (90 pounds per dozen) | 4 Blankets
I had neighbor complaints about my grand piano. bought 6 moving blankets. the 90 lbs per dozen kind. draped them ofer the lid and bobs your uncle, i can practice without driving them crazy.....to a point. seriously if you get blankets buy the heaviest you can or double em up, they wrk fine. great fer big windows. i had a terrible spank in the room when recording. just one thickness of these blankets over the large corer window fixed 80% of the wierd reverb.
Mailbag ? Would it be better to invest in a Lav/Recorder set up or a Boom/Recorder set up, if I am planning on doing short films near busy streets with cars near by, for a first time short film maker.
needed this. gonna put a pop up canopy around bed. hang some moving blankets around it , possibly on top, lay down some high pile rugs. and wear a noise canceling ear bud on the ear im not laying on.
Acoustic sound blankets are just 65lb/dozen moving blankets, but with loops and grommets attached. You can get the same quality moving blankets for much cheaper, just check the weight first. Even the thinner 35lb/dozen blankets are significantly better sound proofing. You can buy twelve of those for the cost of one expensive acoustic blanket and just double layer them up instead.
A number of years ago I was contracted to record distance learning classes at a small university. They had already contracted with a DL consultant to re-design the existing classroom. He required thick carpet (floor to ceiling) on 3 walls around the students. I was brought in just before the classes began. I had the professor wear a wireless lav mic but I also had to mic the students’ questions for the video recording. At that time we couldn’t afford individual mics for the students so I had to mount boundary mics on 2x2 boards that fit the drop ceiling frames above the students’ desks. The carpet did minimize the echo in the room surprisingly well. I would have liked to have had better mics for the 20+ students tho.
For attaching the Zoom to your body, use a belt hook to 1/4in adapter. They're plastic and cheap, but you can then attach the Zoom to the 1/4in screw and you can swivel it to look at it when needed.
#Mailbag Question: When putting together documentary work with archive footage, how do you create a consistent sound and feel for the work? How do you match different audio captures?

#mailbag I'm not the strongest person out there. In my film class, I am the one usually stuck holding the boom pole. Any tips on how to hold the boom pole without getting tired?
I would recommend different grips and alternating between them between takes. If you can get away with holding the boom lower so it angles up above the actor while still grabbing great dialogue and not getting into shot that could help. It will use different muscle groups giving others a rest.
Dont hold the weight with your arms but with your entire back and even your legs. Don't spread your hands too far on the boompole, having them closer gives you more movility. #mailbag what is the best to record sound with a zoom or tascam DR40 recorder

Are your Microphones Cardioid pattern?
supercardioid
@@DeityMicrophones Thank you for the quick response!
Do these soundproof or just reduce sound
Neither. They reduce the sound from reflectioning off hard surfaces or echo from a large spacious room.
#mailbag question: Can you show us how to do a DIY Foley Booth? I would think it would be in the same direction as your DIY Sound Booth but there are some nuances to it that I'm sure we'd need to pay attention too.
#mailbag If you are hired early enough for a film or short film do you try to get involved In the pre production process? Such as location scouting to provide input based on sound?
I want to see the DIY sound bag video.
#mailbag not really a question but a recommendation. With the zoom bag/case for handy recorders there's a loop that allows you to easily stick it or tie it to your boom pole or other pole shaped object. I've done his before on a shoot and it's great for being able to read levels on my h5.
#mailbag what’s a good affordable microphone I can use to instantly get better audio?
Great content - now I have to watch the other ones you mentioned! Cool! (I'm thumbs up #354)
