I'm so jealous here we are in freezing weather NO FLYING and you are in wave. It's February dammit! Seriously, I have never flown wave but am planning a winter trip to go experience wave flying (haven't landed on a location yet). A few questions for you: 1. Is wave very predictable in your area? ie: if I were to book a flight at a specific time in February and spend about a week in Warner Springs would there be, say, a 60% chance of flying wave? (don't worry I won't sue you if the year I go to Warner Springs is the year wave did not appear - I just want to get a historical view) 2. How far does the wave extend (approximately) ? Thanks for the great video.
Thanks.Glad you enjoyed it. The wave is not that predicable very long out- at least I don’t know how to predict it based on macro weather patterns. We’re keeping an eye on the SkySight wave predictions and going off that. Even that can look great 4 days out then peter out as the day approaches. Since you haven’t flown wave I’d recommend a dedicated Wave Camp (Check the back of Soaring Magazine for those clinics). They’ll have ground school classes, and gliders set up with oxygen, and maybe even a wave window to fly above18,000 ft. Check Boulder Co area, Williams Soaring (california). Minden is famous for it but the operation has changed hands and I’m not sure what their current status is. Their wave window is not active from what I can see. I’ve done their wave clinics twice and it was great. There might be someone out east, but I don’t really know who or where. I know David Hart (SSA Magazine editor) has done a bunch of wave flights over the Appalachian range. I can’t seem to locate his TH-cam at the moment.
nice day, well done!
That was some beautiful footage you got, Bill. Thanks for the visual aids. Cheers.
Catch the wave, Bill.
