  • Roatán is an island in the Caribbean off the northern coast of Honduras. It is located between the islands of Útila and Guanaja, and is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras.
Meet the founder of the Where Are You From (WAYF) project. She is a proud Garifuna woman and started this project to help support the children in Roatan.

I love this! The only difference is in Belize we refer to the plantain as hudut and the coconut milk and fish soup as sere. I 100% agree about the loss of language. My grandfather (a hondureño) only tried to teach my the language once and that was it. I really wish he taught us the language when we were younger. You'd probably only hear the language being spoken in Stan Creek or Punta Gorda.
Happy Garifuna settlement day 🇧🇿🇧🇿🇧🇿 (Nov. 19)

In all actuality the only place in belize you will hear garifuna being widely spoken is an hopkins thats it. The rest of garifuna communities in belize communicate in kriol english.

I'm glad I found your channel. My grandmother is from Honduras and my grandfather is from Belize and she told me that we are Garifuna. Ever since then I've been so interested in learning about where I'm from. I was born and raised in Brooklyn and I wish I had all of the connections I do now. I visited Roayan once on a cruise but I want to come back and spend time in Roatan and I want to bring my kids so they know where they're from. Thank you for this.
